Ok, so my dad's office is in California, but he lives here, so he has to travel there form time to time. Now, he got the president to make it move here, to Florida, to even this town! Now he says that I might be able to work for him if I want, and the place has DSL, while i'm stuck with dialup. I'd have the IT tech or whatever department (Basically shit around with computers) and get a real paycheck and everything. I thought this would be all fine and dandy, but then I remembered, summer vacation isn't going to last forever. I'm pretty reluctant to give up even more of my time to go work at this job after doing my schoolwork (But I AM homeschooled, and then agian I do have a ton of free time I really enjoy...) because I fear when i'm done I won't have enough time to do the things I want...

Bah, I know i'd have to do work eventually, but, that AND school to frustrate me?

..well, most everyone gets a job and manages school once they are old enough. It's not that hard, you have to give up free time. Honestly, if you want money then who cares if you can't sit on Acmlm's all day long.
If you have that attitude as an adult about balancing work and play, you're gonna have a difficult time.

It's just part of that "growing up" thing, I too am going through this.

But in your situation, it seriously doesn't sound that complicated ... I mean, you'll be working somewhat with your dad? I'm sure that means he can help pitch in for "requests" that you may have, and what have you.

And also you're homeschooled, I don't know how hard homeschooling is, but homeschooling or not there's still plenty of time to do things after school.

Besides, you probably won't work constantly everyday or something because of your age, unless you want that? Most people between 14-17 who have job end up getting labled as "Part Time Employee's".

So, I'd say don't worry about it ... sure, you'll be losing some "fun time" but you'll be making money in it's place.

Lots of kids around here do have a part-time job during school and manage it... however, they don't work a long time to begin with. :\ The government here recommends that students work no more than 15 hours/week during school, because studies have shown that their grades suffer if they work more than that.

But still, you'd probably still have free time and all... it depends. If you need the money or want the experience, go for it.

Well, another thing I thought of, is that most people were like "wow" at me setting up a network, which I demonstrated by walking their people in Germany AND San Fran (Where the office currently WAS) through the steps of hooking up a router and stuff, heh, meaning I would be doing mostly easy stuff, computing wise, kind of funny in a way actually...

Oh well, yeah I guess I wouldn't be working long to begin with, that's for sure, but hell, it'd be good experience and that money would help with a new computer. I just had to get over thei nitial shock, things are looking up now that i'm considering all the advantages. Thanks.

Good luck, I'd say if you're positive you can handle it, go for it. I'd imagine they'd be more understanding to your school situation and whatnot, unlike my last job as a cashier, where it was like they'd ask you to work a little bit later one night, then the next night, then the next night, sure you got more money but you end up being deadshit worn out, and there's no time for rest in between.=\ So if they'll be understanding of school and stuff, I'd totally go for it, but I figure they would considering the type of job, and you have the bonus that your dad is working for the same company, right? So it's not like you against the machine.

Off topic, may I ask, what part of Florida did you end up?

As for the topic at hand, I say good for it. Then, the money that you do earn, save some of it for the future and have fun with the other part.

Sounds like the job is a pretty good one and it could be worse. When I turned 16, I had school and a job, plus I was active in plays, so I was very busy. Especially when my schedule looked like this:

wake up at 6am
School
Get out at 3:30pm
Get to work byt 4:30pm or 5pm
Leave at midnight
Go home
Sleep?
wake up at 6am and do it all again.

And this went on for my last two years in high school.

Yeah. I know I CAN handle it, I just wouldn't be very happy about the time I have left, with me being so used to it already.

Oh yeah I say you should go for it, especially if they understand your school schedule and what not. The money will give you a umm..make you feel good about yourself and you'll have spending money to have fun with when you ahve time. You just have to manage the time wisely to balance everything out. Homeschool isn't too bad from what I hear so Im sure you'll do coolio.

Listen, I read your post and skipped the rest because once I read that one post I decided on what I was going to say.

If you want to do it, do it, if you don't, don't. I sounds like you could probably manage home school and a job. So that's not a problem. But consider the fact that you can't re-live this time of your life. I'm sure your dad won't be too overly disappointed if you hold off on the job till after school.

I would personally hold off unless I needed, or wanted, some extra cash.

Your choice

You should have kept reading. You see, this is the *perfect* job. Working for a parent who can give you some breaks and be sure you're treated okay, doing work that most people around here would hardly consider "work" and getting paid to do it.
I honestly don't understand how you could turn your dad down. I'm dying for a job, you just seem selfish to me for letting something as good as this pass you by.
It is his choice, but the better option should be staring him in the face.

Selfish to let it pass you by? Do you understand any of your own post.

It's okay to take advantage of your father rather than just work for him for a job. It's okay that you slack off and get paid for it. It's okay that you will be in better positions than many people, who have been working their asses off for years, might never even get close to. But wait...you want to pass it by so that you can live out you life as a kid while it lasts??? How selfish!!!

I'm usually a pretty easy going guy. Ask any one. Every one that knows me likes me. But when I have to sit here and read as you shove your foot in your mouth and all the while knowing that you are thinking.

"I'm so nice. Look at all this great advice I'm giving these poor defensless people."

Now please, count to ten and see if you can accept anything I just wrote to you before you post back. It was a poor presentation but atleast you can try.

Dude... take a chill pill.

Getting a job when you're 16 or 17 is part of growing up, you get rewards that can be bigger and better than just sitting around all day soaking up free time.
I didn't say that taking this job would be a free ride, I said it's a great opportunity for a first job. If he makes a mistake, he can learn from it rather than get fired like most bosses would do.

You misread my post.
I'm dying for a job, you just seem selfish to me for letting something as good as this pass you by.
Reread that.
I said that I think it is selfish to let a job like this pass go by, because who knows if he will be forced to work at McDonald's when we finally wants a job. Not such great opportunities are always available to teenagers.

I'm not the only person here who told Dei* this, but you obviously did not take the time to read.

Lastly, do not mock me. This is Officer's Club, it's where people ask for help and others try to help them. It's not your place to criticize me for that.

*Sigh*

I was wondering. What are the requirements for this job? Do you meet them? Do you think you could keep up with everything that you would have to in order to keep up with competition inside the company?

These are some simple questions you can ask yourself when you consider this job
