Ok, here's the deal, I got the yahoo messenger, then when I click buttons in the IM window, the entire yahoo thing just vanishes, like it shut down. WHY?

the yahoo! messenger client is buggy..there is probably something in the computer configuration that causes it to crash..

if you want to use yahoo! messeneger, use Gaim or Trillian

I'm going to second the recommendation away from Yahoo! Messenger's official client.

I don't like ANY of the Official clients much, and prefer to use an alternative where possible.

neotransotaku's already mentioned Gaim and Trillian, both are very good. A very light IM client is also Miranda IM.

Gaim will work on Linux and Windows too.

As for me, I almost exclusively use Adium and I wish that clients on Windows were as pretty
