Has ANYONE heard of "Art is in the eye of the beholer"?

Appearently, these small childrejn don't. You made a returning regular leave, you flamed up a comic thread JUST for its quality, and you call yourselves smart. A LAUGH AND A HALF!

My suggestion is put your heads on straight and acknowledge some people like some works!

I'm going to assume you're talking about the Photoshop thread with the photomanip. of Yoda, right?

I'm going to say this much: A comic thread should probably be better suited to Craziness than to Modern Art. In Craziness, then it will be taken purely on comedic value, and nobody will attempt to give a critique.

In Modern Art however, then you are likely to get a critique on your work. It will not always be positive.

Now, I will admit that my critique was not very constructive which I regret, however I do stand by my base sentiment about that artwork. The artist said that it took 10 minutes, and that showed. It would've benefitted from more time and care being taken.

I have no problem with people posting comedic art here, but people need to remember that art in here will be taken on both it's comedic AND artistic value and critiques may be given.

That is all.

And just a short note: If this thread gets out of hand, I will be closing it pretty quick-smart, so please keep things civil

I see. It's just people are to hard on people for no reason.

People look at the bad art and say, "Aw man, you suck and I'm smarter than you blah blah blah" and really put the members down. All I'm asking is that people ease up on the hard-nose. It hurts some peoples feelings.

I'm all up for critiquing positive and negative points, but I really don't feel like putting insults on the side.....

Well, if you see something that you think is getting insulting, then point it out to the person (and to me or JDavis if you feel it's necessary).

I will also admit that my comment on that particular thread was bluntly honest (and could have been seen as insulting). Don't be afraid to let me know if I've crossed a line. I'll also admit that I am not the best qualified to offer specific advice on a photomanip; I just get that it looks "wrong" sometimes

It might be worth a slight revision to the announcement regarding Photoshop at some point too. Because Photoshop is so accessible; and percieved as easy (and some of that perception is certainly not unjustified) it also tends to get harsher comments than say, a drawing, etc. I'll have a think about it all.

Art is all about critisim. I'm a pretty decent artist, and when I recieve critism, I don't go around saying, "OMG you hurt mai feelins " I take it into consideration and try to do a beter job next time. Besides; it wasn't art; it was a bad Photoshop edit. I gave him points for trying, but it was just... bad. It was just a selection and a recolor. Anyone could've done it.

I think crossing the line is when you actually go out and flame the person, which you didn't do, Tarale.
I think the wrong mindset with plenty of people who want to show off their art is that they are impressed by it, and expect lots of praise. If you don't do that, they're offended and instead go ahead and criticize about YOUR criticism, and it's all just ridiculous.
Shyguy, no one made Rockman leave. Just because he had be a baby about his art didn't mean he was being driven out of the board, if that's even possible.
Rockman even admitted it was a lazy effort, of course people are going to call him on that.

Tarale, does this fall under your idea of a thread getting out of hand? I'd disagree, but either way it seems unfair to the author. It's possible he was taking what everyone was saying to heart, and putting more effort into his next strip.
I don't actually know if you closed this or not, I'm just assuming. If not, I'm sorry. It's just that whoever closed it didn't bother to explain why.

Valcion did that one.

But seriously, if you don't want to be poked fun at for crap, don' t post crap. Easy. Spend some -time- making it look good. Think "If I had seen highly superior comics to this, would I still find the artwork presented in the comic to be good?" If the answer is "no" because you just have a large black line for scenery and horribly drawn textboxes, don't post it until you fix it and make it look better.

Same goes for photoshops.

A simple tip for you idiots:
IF IT TAKES LESS THAN 30 MINUTES, IT PROBABLY SUCKS. SPEND SOME MORE TIME MAKING IT BETTER.
(this does not apply to sketches)

Not everyone is perfect. Doesn't make turn it into anything fecal related.

How I see it is that you can say they can do better, but when they call it crap, or it sucks, that's the kind of thing that hurts. try to critique the artwork, not insult it.

I can piss in a hat and demand you to love it because, regardless of the lack of effort I put into it, not everyone is perfect.
Does that seem right to you? He spent ten minutes on it. He did a sloppy job of using the lasso tool. People didn't just say "it sucks," they also explained why. There were a good amount of comments on why it was bad. Obviously you're not getting this.

Seriously if you post your first comic on acmlm you should be prepared for it.
I tried making a comic and the bad things everyone pointed out actually helped me a little.
I f you would see a new comic everyday you understand why they behave like this.

I'm not talking about ALL people. Just the few that like to flame people. I'm not saying that saying, "This looks like it has been done 30 minutes" is flaming. What I mean is, don't call it crap. And it's not the person's fault if they are a little bad at it.

Sure, it takes some gut to accept negative critiques. But, that is acceptable. What is not acceptablre is to treat people like they suck entirely just because their art sucks.

dragon master has exactly the right attitude about this.
Shyguy, you made this topic because you think that everyone flamed Rockman so that he'd leave the board, without giving him a chance. Now you're saying "just the few that like to flame people." No one came and was harsh without explaining why.

"This looks like it has been done in 30 minutes" is NOT flaming. And in Rockman's case, it's a compliment.

He admitted he only spent ten minutes on that art. How can you still say "it's not the person's fault if they are a little bad at it" in that case? HE PUT NO EFFORT.

YD -- not sure what happened with that thread, but Xkeeper does so uh.. yeah

But yeah, anything that lacks effort is likely to come under negative criticism. Some people will be very careful about giving a negative critique, and others will be very blunt.

With negative critiques, you have to take both. Even if they're really blunt, because both styles of critique are valuable. Some comments ARE harsh -- but you know what? They're the ones that get your attention. They might hurt a little to start with, but they get you thinking.

Outright personal flames or comments are not on, and empty comments (without any explanation) are not on either, but I think you'll find that (as Yoshi Dude already said) nobody did either.

and why the FUCK do you have tarale's bunny in your sig, shyguy. did you even ask if you could modify it?

I outright flamed because honestly, i'm fucking sick and tired of seeing people that htink just because they have photoshop, they can make amazing graphics. Or just because they have mspaint and "a sense of humor" They can make sprite comics.

And yeah, i did close that thread. It was getting REALLY bad and it could only get worse.

Yoshi has a point; Example: "See, you still failed, though. That's one of the crappiest photoshop coloring jobs I've ever seen. Hell, I can see all the spots where you used the lasso tool. Plus the fact that you didn't change the skin color under his saber glow.

Also, you missed a spot. The bottom. And Reckon just doesn't sound like a Sithname to me. Get Nick in here to judge that"
~Cymoro.

He says, "You fail", and it's the "crappiest... jobs I've ever seen." Yes. He is making fun of and criticizing his skills rather maliciously, but he explains why it obviously sucks. Now, explain to me why criticism, then reasons why does not equal help for the person to make his work better? You don't seem to understand the art world at all. My art teacher last year looked over my shoulder and saw that my shading was totally off. I only saw it after she pointed it out. She tore it up and threw it out and made me do it again. That's the way things go. Also, if you're specifically peeved at certain members, tough. You cannot change people by bitching about their attitudes. Either accept the fact that some people can be douches, or just shut up about it and don't go on a bitching spree.

Yeah, I guess you all are right. It just hurts me to see people feel like they've been insulted. That's all. I'm a pathetic sympathetic.

MK M said it would get better artwise, though. When people ask not to be too harsh, though. Don't be too harsh. I guess that's how it works. Anyway, you all win this debate. I now undersand. I call for either a close n trash, a close n display case(not likely) or a final comment and just leave it here.

PS: May I please use the bunny?

A final comment? OK...
May you become as popular as a boil on the king's backside, O ye dabbler in abominations!
...
Seriously now...
What have we learned here today? Perhaps it's that people can only take criticism too far. If you want advice and criticism without being flamed, please take special care to add the phrase, "Not too tough", or something similar to your thread. When you receive criticism, don't take it personally; some people just have their own ways of telling you how to improve. Take care of yourself, and each other.

Here's a final coment:

This thread is crap. Your skills at thread-making are crap. I haven't seen this much crap since my accidental trip to the crapporium. It's like I made a thread that was crap, then I made you eat that crap thread, then I made X-Keeper eat your crap which contained the original crap thread and this is his crap that consits of all the other crap. I crap on the grave of your dead dog, Crappy McCrap-Pants. Crapper. Let's make a photoshop of Yoda where he's brown and call him Darth Crapiness. Crap, crappity crap-crap-crap.

CRAP.

Or not and I'm just being silly. Whichever. *closes*
