Well, for some reason I just noticed a few days ago during startup F8 does NOT bring up the Start Up Mode menu like it usually would, instead it takes me to a Boot Menu for my drivers. F12 takes me to a Networking Boot Menu, and Tab goes to Logo ... which does absolutely nothing. So, is there another way I could start up Windows in safe-mode? Our computers been a little messed up ever since we installed a new Processor, Motherboard, and Powersupply. Our computer really has improved on it's speed, but during start up it still displays our Athlon 1800 Processor, while we really have a 2400 one installed. I've checked the drivers myself, and don't know why it's doing that. |

F8 should do the trick...i'm guessing you are mashing down F8 like there is no tomorrow when the computer starts up yeah? anyways, if you can find a way to edit boot.ini, add the "/Safeboot" to the the first line after [Operating Systems] if that doesn't work, maybe you should just reinstall XP again (try to rename the original WINDOWS and "Documents and Settings" folder first...) |

Did you read my post? In the startup menu it specifically says: F8 - Boot Menu I push F8, not repeatedly, but nicely once. Then it takes me to a screen where I choose which driver I want to boot up first. It's pointless. So, F8 does not work, like I said. I'll look into editing boot.ini I guess ... And I don't plan on reinstalling anything, this is our family computer and my dad won't even allow me to reformat it. |

driver by what you want to boot up first? what do you mean by "driver"? i remember, when I had OS selection screen, pressing F8 on that, then selecting OS allows you to select boot options for the OS you don't have to reformat the computer, you just need to make the computer think that winXP was never installed...renaming the WINDOWS folder will do just that. |

msconfig. run it. boot.ini. click it. /safemode. check it. This makes it constantly boot into safe mode, regardless of what you do (until you untick that box) (and is probably a hell of a lot safer than fiddling with the ini file, since msconfig knows exactly where to put it) (edited by X-Fairy on 06-24-05 01:55 PM) (edited by X-Fairy on 06-24-05 02:00 PM) |

I've never seen F8/F12/Tab do anything. When I need to get into safe mode I just cut the power while it's booting up.

that's dangerous to your HD you know... but yeah, if you can start up winXP, then X-Fairy's route is much, much safer

Well, it's really not safer than using Notepad or another text editor (and do not use a word processor). You might want to actually make a second entry for Safe Mode, to have a menu waiting for you to chose Normal-mode or Safe Mode.

Originally posted by XeomegaIf your BIOS displays 1800+, it's running at 1800+ speed. If it shows 2400+, then it's running at 2400+ speed. You might need a BIOS update for your motherboard. And you also may be pressing F8 too early. Wait till the BIOS is almost done booting, before the WinXP splash screen shows up. Also, see if you can change the boot menu key (or disable it) in the BIOS. Your processor should be set to 266MHz (133 DDR) FSB with a 15.0 multiplier. |

Well that's not good news ... at least it finds our new RAM correctly. Well I'll have to look into this when I get back from work today, hopefully I can fix it. I've mainly just been wanting to run Adaware, Spybot, and HiJack this in Safe-Mode because I never have. Our computer has a ton of shit on it, since we've had it for almost 4 years I think, we've never reformatted ... Trust me, I would, and it's easy as a few key strokes, but my dad thinks computers should never be reformatted, no joke. But it seems like I have a bigger issue now with my processor. |
