This is too weird, and definately not serious enough, to go in OC, methinks. So it goes here.

I'm a fencer...not the greatest, or even close to it. Don't fence Olympic style...can't remember exactly what it's called...starts with a "d" (I'll get back to you guys on that). We fight epee and schlagger...no foils. It's what the club here at OU does...we don't compete; we're just having a good time.

One of the fellows there, I learned to call him by his SCA name...he's got a forge. And blacksmithing skills...very excellent blacksmitting skills indeed. I spoke to him about getting m' own fencing sword, instead of always borrowing a club blade. He said to get him a blade and pommel, and to pay him half as the downpayment. He said that "sometime in April" he should be back in the forge, and can make me the hilt (handle + guard/crossbar) then. I was thinking of one of those German guards & crossbars, the ones that can easily disarm an opponent.

I was thinking sweet...just gotta find these things...not too expensive.... I knew from the get-go it wasn't cheap. Well...found an online shop called "The Fencing Post." Sent in a question, got a direct answer. All is good. Prices...about what I expected. Sent an E-Mail giving m' request...printed a copy of it that I sent with the money order. That was two weeks ago.

So...in the meantime, I took a swing past this place called "Beads and Things." That have a variety of interesting things there...one of the types of beads availible is lapis. I love that range of blue found on that stone...it's so beautiful. So..I went and got a bunch of this pieces used for stringing it up...and a stronger string. Threads the holes drilled into the lapis was...fun. Or not. I had to go get a candle to wax the end, and slow the fraying. Candles aren't legal in the dorm...so I had to do that fast. The point of doing this, was so that I could fence with the eight-inch string of lapis to the pommel of m' sword, and give m' opponent another moving object to look at (this one being a rich shade of blue, instead of seeing nothing other than grey and white moving about).

Last night, I got to meet up with the smith at the shire's SCA meeting. I spoke to him about the hilt again...about paying for it now and such. He said things got pushed back...so that now, he won't be able to get in there 'till around Memorial Day. So...I get to wait longer on the hilt.

And this afternoon...the package arrived with the blade & pommel. I tried tying the lapis string into place on the pommel...and the string itself did not hold. So...I need to get a clasp so that I could turn this into a bracelet for a friend with small wrists (or an anklet for someone with small feet).

C'est la vie. No big.
