I don't know how many of you reading this also visit the SMW hacking fourm, but alot of bumping of old threads; up to a year old (), have been happening recently. Here is my solution to the problem:

Why dont we just get rid of the "New Reply" button once you are past the first 2 pages? Like we have this first page you see when you open the fourm. Then the one page after that. Then if you go one page past that (pg.3) and click on a thread, the New Reply button isn't there. Also, if you try to manually type in the reply URL using that threads number, it will bring you to a "cannot reply" page or something.

You could even have it so that power level 2 and above CAN reply, but regular and banned users cannot reply. That way, only pages 1 and 2 have threads you can reply to. Also, maby have it so that the thread creator can reply to their own thread no matter what the page, kinda like how only the poster can edit their own post, but not edit other peoples.

I think it would be a good idea, how about you? It would stop bumping.

I realize that allowing the creator to reply to their own thread may still result in bumps, but it would cut it down by a ton compared to how it is now. So tell me what you think about this idea!

The problem with that is that the number of pages is customizable...if someone decided to display 5000 threads per page, they could reply to some really old threads.

Exactly. We also wouldn't place bump bans after a certain date, because some forums are more active than others.
Old thread bumps aren't THAT big of a problem, and the user is notified of their mistake. If it persists, then consequences follow.

For the most part, yes. Unfortunately, because of the activeness of the forum, these bumps have been messing several people up. Besides, why not have it where after 50 or 75 threads down the list, the board decides in the script, but not based on the user's preferences?

Because in, say, Super Mario World Hacking, the 50th thread down the list is generally pretty recent, whereas in Super Mario Series it could be years old.

So, then I'll be stubborn. write a number somewhere in a header for the forum, and have it be the last bumpable thread. There you go. Different Bump lenths depending on forum activeness.
