No. But this person that I got this e-mail from thinks they are:

Dear America Online and Instant Messages users:

Our America online staff is planning to take away IM by July
18th, 2005. If you want to keep our IM free of charge, send this email to
everyone you know. It will be used as a petition. Each person you send
this to counts as one "signature" If this petition gets 100,000 signatures
they will keep AOL IM.

If they do not receive 100,000 votes you will have to pay 15.00 to have IM
(per month). If you don't care about this then please for everyone's
sake help out a little. Thank you for your time and consideration and
please help AOL beat their vote.

This is a scam, people. Do NOT send any forwards if you receive this e-mail. There has not been an announcement on aol.com or any other place announcing the possibility of this. I suggest you do NOT open this e-mail if you receive it. Oh, and there's all kinds of discrepancies in this e-mail to prove that it's a hoax.

Well, if there's no virii attached then it's a perfectly normal chain letter.

A stupid one that 5% of the Internet will reply to, but a chain letter regardless.

I used to get stuff like this from people on AIM. They'd send it and be like "OMG DONT LET THIS HAPPEN AIM IS THE BEST OMG."
AOL wouldn't do that, they would get SO MANY complaints. At least I hope they won't ever do that in the future..

Chain mails... or chain IM's.

I got one recently from someone on YIM, stating that Yahoo wouldn't keep it's IM service free.

Snopes lists alot of thoose chain mails, and it seems that chain IM's start to take loose.

OH GOD, DID YOU KNOW THAT THEY KEEP KITTIES IN BOTTLES? THAT'S GODDAM AWFUL.

(even if it's not true... I still have to tell people repeatly it's just some sick joke )

as I said, Snopes is a good reference for such things. If not you could always check their forums, which I post at.

This has been going around for years. The biggest thing people fail to realize is that when you get an email you have no way to tell whether it was forwarded to one person or a million. That is unless every single person left the original message in and added some text of their own...

Whenever I get an email saying to send it to 50 people or whatever, I just send it back to the sender 50 times.

And as excuse, I would say that the software/god actually counts the number of times a mail is sent, and not to which persons.

And good idea, I do that the next time I get a chan letter... which is never. I see other people getting chain mails all the time thought, and belives them but they don't send any crap to me... :/

I hate these types of things. I used to get tons of chain letters, not so much anymore. (Thank God) Now I just get random IM's about chain letters.

And you have to figure that it won't be only 5% of the Internet falling for it either. People believe a lot of forwards.

I just delete them...unless they're warranted for a look at because of something that really need to be forward...not spam or chain letter crap.

....Or, um, it could be some 45 year old guy living in his mom's basement. And if it is a kid, I doubt his parents check his email daily for him. Or her. But a doubt a girl would be stupid enough to do this.
