MAP 3.9 2005/06/20 07:21:42 36.920N 89.000W 21.2 20 km (12 mi) W of Clinton, KY
map 2.7 2005/06/19 21:00:32 36.920N 88.990W 15.6 5 km ( 3 mi) S of Clinton, KY

This is near the New Madrid fault line. Earthquake activity here in mid-Mississippi River Valley has been up this year. What might this indicate for us?

EDIT: 3.9 was downgraded to a 3.6.

Wow, there's been a TON of earthquakes lately. I'm supposing this is all going to lead up to one massive one that may or may not shake the United States/world.

Uhm, they're only 4s or less. That's nowhere near the devestation that an 8 makes. If I recall, the intensity is 10x worse per number up or some figure like that.

I doubt it's much to worry about. Probably just the Earth having a light spasm or two. Now if for some reason stuff comes up the next day and you're having quakes that are as bad as the ones halfway around the world last Christmas, THEN I'd worry about it.

No matter the size, I hope that anyone around these quakes, or natural disasters are safe and well.

Its been an odd month with all these quakes, an early tropical (almost hurricane) and all the planes falling from the sky.

Well, that depends. Sometimes an increased number of light earthquakes will lead up to a big one. The New Madrid Seismic Zone, centered in southeast Missouri and in which these two earthquakes occurred, has a history of producing big earthquakes.

There does seem to be a lot of quakes. Nothing worrysome as long as they're small though.

You got nothing on California.

I don't see what's to worry about.

Yeah, California's been shaking nonstop these past few weeks. There's been easily over 50 recorded quakes. It's insane.

In the 70's.

Here's a new article: New Data Confirms Strong Earthquake Risk to Central U.S.

UnsurpassedDarkness,

We do have earthquake insurance though. I think the NMSZ presents a serious threat not only for the local, but also the national economy, because such an earthquake would take place bam in the middle of the country.

(BTW, that 3.9 was downgraded to a 3.6.)

MarioMaster,

I checked where Monroe County, KY, is, and the earthquake was way too far west for you to have felt it there. It's about the same distance from the epicenter as I am, and I didn't feel it.

Lotsa earthquakes recently. I had a look at a map that had all of the recnt earthquakes in the pacific, and the coincided with the "ring of fire", a ring of volcanoes. I wouldn't be surprised if the volcanoes were involved or were affecteed by the earthquakes. Lotsa small earthquakes up here in Vancouver island too, if only small shocks from the others.

Yeah, I noticed that too. Is it simply that the earth is happening to move through a slightly more chaotic time?
