I'm using Thunderbird too. An email containing keywords like sex, penis and, other and such immediately get moved into the junk folder; But now the spammers even know that, so people send German mails with a header like
"Kostenlose S'EX-Galerien !"; hoping the spam filter won't mark them as spam
On the other hand, if only one of 10.000 people who got a spam mail, click on the link inside the mail and go to the page, it was worth to dispatch all other mails for the sender. You can send dozens of mails almost for nearly nothing; they have very little costs usually.

I have had to get a new email address, my old one was full of spam, so now with my new account, i usually get around 10-15 spam a day, they all just go to my junkmail filter and they mostly consist of porn, star signs or stupid viruses.

You know, I really don't get that much spam in my mail box. Maybe three every other day. And my e-mail service filters the junk/spam mail anyway, so it isn't really a concern for me.

I used to get a bunch, but not anymore.

I hated those ones that would say "Hey! Remember me from the club? We were WILD last night" as the subject title

I have never been to a club. I'm only 16.

Well, if you requested an email of a company for example, be sure to check the spam folder too. It already happened twic that regular emails, after I ordered something from the net, got moved into the spam folder on gmx.de; probably the filter recognized a word on the blacklist and treated is as spam
Fortunately, the email probider now automatically dispatches an info mail for all spam mail entries you got per day, if you use an external email application, such as Pegasus Mail, Mozilla Thunderbird etc

I get two to three spam mail messages per day... and that's in my spam account. In my personal account I get maybe one spam a week if that.

Oh yeah, I get a lot of viruses too, but like I said, the majority of those can be safely ignored. Just make sure that your mail client or whatever deletes ALL mail with a .exe, .pif, .scr, .bat attachment, and no worries. I don't know anybody who would LEGITIMATELY send me one of those files. I left .zip, like I said, so I still get that virus-spam, but somebody might legitimately send me a .zip, and I don't want to risk a false positive with that one

EDIT: Oh goodie, it looks like my spammer from Comcast.net is on right at the moment, sending out their daily spam. *waves* Hello! *reports to spamcop as a mole*

Stopping spam's rather easy.
-Don't give out your email in plain text format or use a common filter. Spambots will pick it up. I imagine they're smart enough now to recognize something like user@nospam.domain.com or user[at]domain[dot]com, try something totally off the wall like user@monkeybrainsdomain.com (with instructions on what to remove of course) or typing ti backward. Or you could just make an image out of it.
-NEVER, EVER, EVER click an unsubscribe link in a spam message. You'll be removed from their list - and added to 20 more.
-Don't use IE. Spyware = teh bad.
-Avoid 'send this page to a friend' links, random mailing lists, and other such things that ask for your email.
-When checking your mail, don't open things that are obviously designed to bypass spam filters or replies to a message you didn't send. (I never quite got why viruses always pretend to be replies, any idiot can tell they never sent a message to these 20 people regarding 'your movies'. ) There's a lot less danger if you use a non-M$ browser/client but there's still no point in opening them.
-Don't download exe, scr, pif, bat, com, vbs or js attatchments. If someone needs to send you one of these, they can quite easily put it into a zip. (And there's no reason I can think of to send someone a .pif file.)

Yahoo also does a great job of filtering. For every one that shows up in my inbox, about 20 are in junk. (Of course I run a quick check in Junk to make sure it's all spam. )

I have 4 email addresses. No spam to any of them.

I haven't gotten spam since I started on the net except when my friend signned me up to animal porn sites but I don't get those anymore.

Hyperhacker -- but I'm very good with my spam avoidant practices, and I STILL get spam.

If you have your own domain, you're at risk too.

When I had all the business mails, "abuse@" "sales@" "info@" etc, all got spambombed to hell.....

All the domains I have had have been VERY quiet with spam for a while, and then BANG. Although I did read on Slashdot that they are actually going through domain listings and things now looking for targets. DNS stuff and whatnot. And you can't NOT put a mail address on those, you are REQUIRED to.

Oof... I couldn't even use filters with that account when I was using web access... then again, I had no say in that, and at least they have solid attachment scanning (deletes damn near everything that's a virus).

I used to get stuff which like most was the usual MAKE IT 3 FEET LONGER!! things but my ISP which I also use as my main e-mail recently intro'd a bulk folder which so far seems to have successfully eradicated the problem. Of course I don't expect it to last and soon I'll get stuff again.
Whats best is I no longer get these panicky phonecalls from my dad. He used to get those e-mails trying to sell him anti-virus stuff with subjects along the lines of "Your Anti-Virus is out of date" or "You (possibly) have a Virus!!" yet he never learnt to recognise them as spam and would constantly harass me to "deal with it"
