I don't smoke, and I never have. I won't judge people who do, it's their choice and in my opinion, it's a waste of money. Cigarettes cost an awful lot these days. It's simply not worth it.

Both of my parents smoke. My mom stopped at one point, but started again eventually, so I'm used to second-hand smoking. Some time ago a law regarding no-smoking areas in pubs and restaurants was enforced.
To abide by it, every restaurant must have two separated zones, one for smokers and the other for non-smokers. Some think this is a wonderful idea, others that it sucks, but I don't have my own opinion. Whenever I do go to a restaurant it's with my mom and she smokes so I sit at the smokers area.
As long as people don't smoke directly into me (which has happened before, damnit), it doesn't bother me. It's their lungs that are at stake.

I don''t smoke, and I don't plan to do so anytime. I like my body the way it is, and I don't want to do anything that could hurt my lungs. I believe it's a good idea to have non-smoking sections. Not everyone wants to have to inhale the smoke other people blow out.

Smoke sticks to food on a molecular level. That's how we get things like barbeque and smoked ham. In those cases, non-toxic smoke is used. Cigarette and cigar smoke is toxic, but clings to food just the same. This is the reasoning behind banning smoking in places which serve food; the smoke clinging to food can make the eater sick. Also, smoke travels farther than you can smell it, and lingers around longer than you can see it; simply setting up smoking and non-smoking sections in a resturant does little to protect the smoke from clinging to the food. Smoke also clings to skin, so waitpersons traveling in and out of a smoking section contaminate the food they touch unless they wash. Since it sticks to clothing fibers, too, touching their uniform after cleaning their hands will re-contaminate.

Contaminate may seem a harsh word, it won't kill you, but the young, the old and anyone with a weak immune system can become ill from consuming food laced with cigarette or cigar smoke. It's an issue of public health, not of the government unfairly dictating what private businesses can and cannot do. People tend to be too concerned about private property owners having the right to dictate what happens on their premises. Perhaps we should discontinue health inspections, so as to stop forcing private businesses to keep cleanly. It's their business, they should be able to do as they please, no?

And what of businesses that don't serve food, but primarily alcohol? Such as bars?

Then it should be left up to the bar owner, I believe, because there is no food to be contaminated. Drink does not accept smoke in the way that food does, and alcohol isn't healthy to begin with, so there's no public health risk, and the government has no business meddling. Food and cigarette/cigar smoke shouldn't mix. Other than that, it should be left up to the property owner. That's my opinion, in the least.

But Slay, alcohol does have some proven health benefits if used in moderation. That's why I never buy into the argument that if we ban tobacco we should ban alcohol - they're totally different.

And Kaioshin, if you are old enough to pay taxes, then it doesn't matter if people don't smoke around you - you're still paying for their habit through the money going to pay for their hospital admissions for exacerbations of COPD.

And what's with this argument that because it's a private establishment, a bar should be able to make their own rules seperate from the government? If they started selling kiddy porn, would you have the same stance?

Don't compare two things that are completely different. Its their place, they're place, and people can go else where easily, we have at least 3 bars in this small town of ours here. So, it isn't like its hard to go somewhere else if you wanted.

I don't smoke, nor do I care. I think it's just up to the bar owner to decide the rules of smoking or what not.

Wow you guys, way to totally miss the point. If the tax payers are sick of wasting their dollars paying for health care for people who smoke, then I think the government has every right to stamp out smoking. Whether or not it's a private establishment is totally irrelevant.

And also..."Its their place, they're place"
What does that mean exactly? You've used two different grammers...

Tobacco has proven health benefits, too :o

Really, the Trinity of Vices can't be banned. It's too hard and there is no real reason to. But I will say, they shouldn't have to be consumed.
