Today when I went to the dentist the dentist lady said she was a 100% sure I needed braces. I remember at my last dentist they said it was because I didn't have a straight bite or something. I guess that's half the reason but they aren't all that bad.

Anyways, how are braces? Do they hurt? My friend told me that she heard that they hurt when they get put on and stuff. Are they hard to take care of? It better be worth it to have them on for all that time you did. I think it probably is. Now the only thing is..can my family afford it..eh. So who has had braces and for how long?

They're just are weird to get used to and are a bit annoying when they tighten them. Aside from that, they aren't that bad...and this is coming from the person who had them for a decade (I could feel my teeth when I got them off!), dropped six teeth to them...and all I have to show for it is a metal wire cemented behind my bottom six teeth.

Retention, retainers, and the like might be a bit of an annoyance putting an appliance in if you get that far but...you get used to it.

If anything...think of it as getting glasses.

If you get one, your lips will be cut up for about a month, same for your boyfriend, if you have one

Can be extremely painful, depending on how bad your teeth are You do learn how to live with them, though

Bah...bull. As long as the rubber on the bands doesn't come off or you get punched in the mouth (I got that once...boy was that hell...) you shouldn't have problems.

Oh yea...can't say I ever had problems with kissing and braces neither.

I don't know if my teeth are perfectly straight... But nobody's ever told me I need braces. So I'll just chalk that oversight up to me not needing them.

Well, different people have different experiences with braces.

I had braces for a few years. They can be a little painful when you get them on, but you get used to it. Just eat something soft for a while.

They can also be a little sore when they are adjusted by the orthodontist; but that usually doesn't last too long. The worst part is when they are first put on, and it's not exactly ever an intense pain, it's more a dull ache than anything, and I found I only really ever felt it when I ate something anyways.

The metal on your teeth CAN create ulcers and cuts on your lips, although not everybody has this problem. If you do, it's more likely to happen when you are still "new" to having braces, and then your lips toughen up a little more and it doesn't happen so much.

The rubber bands are interesting, I still have hundreds of the little things around somewhere too. I found it odd when one of them would snap all of a sudden when I was talking and go flying out of my mouth... thankfully everybody understood it wasn't my fault and were pretty understanding of that, so it wasn't real embarassing.

For all the discomfort and such, remember that it is only temporary. Sure, it might seem like forever when you have them on, but your braces will come off in time. And when they do, you will be so glad.

When they come off, you realise that you have beautiful teeth and a gorgeous smile. And everybody compliments you on it, and you realise that it was all worth the hassle

My Ex fiancee had braces, she still looked beautiful though. She never let me kiss her until she had them removed. A good thing that happened before we met for the first time now she has a lovely smile so I suppose it's worth it. .

I had braces *shivers*

My dentist first told me I needed spacers and an appliance to space my teeth apart because they were too close together. Then I got top and bottom braces at the same time, and still had the appliance thingy on as well.

Then he said my jaw wasn't aligned so I had to get rubberbands to align my jaw. They hurt like hell if you snap them and they completely miss the hooky thingy.

Then after I got all that shit off(I had all that for 2 yrs) he made me wear a stupid retainer, and later after that... I had to get my wisdom teeth out.. and I was 14...

My teeth were so bad

They're not perfect now but meh, he doesn't ask about the retainer. Whenever I ask about it, he replys, "You're still wearing that?" (And I'm not...lol) I stopped wearing it like 4 months after I first got it. lol XD

So yeah, they're not all bad... But I hated them... lol XD

BEWARE THE EVIL DENTIST!! NINJA'S DO NOT TRUST THE DENTIST...or golfers....

Oh...girl...trust me...did I ever have fun with that. I probably could still find packs of rubber bands lying around. I took extra just to nail people across the way with excess bands...and just start flinging rubber bands (with practiced effort) from my mouth. Give them a big 'wtf'.

And for the bands decoration...that can be fun too if you like to accessorize.

Think...I nailed around 20 feet...but I had to aim it up a bit...really hurts if you misfire.

i had braces for three years, from August 1997 through December 2000. it was alright. at first, it was really show--it took almost 18 months before the real work started.

anyways, braces are worth it if you have crooked teeth--not sure if the same is true for bite problems but then, i guess bite problems will manefest themselves later on so it is probably worth it too

I had braces for a short while in high school. Never really had that much of a problem with them, I'd say the worst part was getting them on in the first place, especially when the orthodontist and her assistants put the little metal spacers between my teeth. But even that didn't hurt all that much, just felt weird afterwards. Eventually you get used to it all, though it still feels pretty good when they finally come off

I guess i'm a little biased but i hated braces. Why you might ask, because i was stuck with the mother fuckers for a brief period of 8 years. Yup, a good 50% of my life 2 years ago. I got them in third grade and didn't get them off till 11th. And the kicker, they didn't even really work. You, my teeth aren't crocked, but they sure as hell ain't that straight either. I think my doc just said i needed them to make money, cause how can you tell a 3rd graders going to have teeth so bad that he needs braces until 11th grade. Maybe without them I would've had perfect teeth. That's why i hate braces.

I'm getting mine off Thursday (It was SUPPOSED to be today, but it wasn't )

Hmm, getting braces at your 16th?

I'm actually going to get some too, not because my teeth haven't ever been in order, because they were, but due to an accident where I fell on my jaw/mouth, 2 of my teeth moved.

Actually, I never understood why little kids have braces, generally most people get them in their early teens when the dentist/orthodontist has a better idea of how things are gonna be.

I remember recently the act of giving kids braces coming under fire from a health authority here because there were a lot of people who had braces who didn't need them.

Me however, I needed them. My teeth were crooked, the baby teeth hadn't come out properly (or at all in some cases) and so my mouth was overcrowded, and my adult teeth were growing in HORRIBLY crooked. I had an overbite too.

Now I have a lovely smile And I have the braces to thank, if I didn't have them, I'd have all sorts of crooked teeth

Never had them, although I might get some use from some sort of adjustment. I've a bit of a gap between my two front teeth. It's not exactly one of Strahanian proportions (watch a Campbell's Soup ad if you don't know him... he's #92 on the Giants... BLUE jersey) but it's kinda noticeable. But no one ever bothered... it adds character. My brother almost needed to get something done that involved breaking his jaw, but that didn't happen.

Anyone use Invisalign? Start talkin'.

Hiryuu: I don't know about yours, but my braces didn't have any rubber at all Nothing between the metal and the gum for me

You can get some gummy stuff that comes in long coils, to snap off and stick on the sharp bits. It comes off eventually, but then you just snap off a bit more and stick it back on again
