First off, if you have a program that does everything for you, that can't be considered "hacking" anymore. If you want to hack, you should be able to get along without a program created by somebody else. What you mean is called "editing".
Besides, Terranigma (which is the only of the three I tried to mess around with) does not use a linear map format (i.e. uncompressed) so it will probably be not quite simple to write an editor for it.

As was your reply, I guess.

It was spammy. (The original post was as well, though...)

I love the Illusion of Gaia game, it's one of my favorites.
I may take a peek at it and eventually make an enemy editor or something ( I like making enemy stat editors ).

It may be quite a ways a way though, I'm in the middle of a Secret of Mana enemy stat editor.

I really should play Soul Blazer and Terranigma though, I've heard they are pretty good.

Ok!

Terranigma is awesome. You should really try it. As for people wanting to make a Terranigma kinda game, I guess you'd be better of by ripping the graphics and using them with a program like RPG Maker.

IoG is the worst in that series. Not to say its bad, though... but if you like it, you'll love the other two... then again, its not like the series is connected. It's kind of even less strung together than FF series. Almost no relation at all between games.

Also, some dude in #rom-hacking said there was already a Soul Blazer editor being made.

However, there is one thing I must add to this: if you really consider yourself a rom hacker, and want an editor for a certain game, then go find the data and write the damned editor yourself instead of whining at other people for not releasing one! It really is annoying.

Ok Impala!, that idea is genius. RPG Maker and Toolkit both work well. Although, it is harder to make action RPGs on those than your traditional FF type RPG.

I wouldnt know, for I havent even tried looking at that game from a hacking standpoint. But xcomgs is the guy who told me there was a SB editor being worked on, so you should ask him about how it was done I suppose.

Bah. IoG is easily the best of the three. I liked soulblazer and I hated Terranigma. So, I'd say playing Soulblazer is worth a shot at the least.

Perhaps it was the translation? I mean, SB's translation wasnt that great, and Terranigma was only fan translated. I could see how that could become a problem.

I completely agree. Finding data in ROMS is REALLY easy. There are so many ways to go about it, some easier than others. Study up on all the different ways of data finding and dive in head first. The very least that could possibly happen is that you learn something, get better and more skilled, and have fun doing it. Time spent learning and exploring isn't wasted time by any means.

It took me all of 10 minutes to find enemy stats for the Secret of Mana, on a whim, and I don't consider myself anywhere near 1st class ROM Hacker material. Anyone can do it.

Also, finding data and making it public may lead to someone with free time and programming skills that may be willing to take up such a project, all they would have to do is code it providing all relevant information and data is present.

I'm sure the other 2 games in the series are really great and better than IOG, but It's one of those games that I grew up playing, and nastalgia has a hold of me.

i couldn't agree more. I've try finding data in that game like a few years ago.

i did found out that the town gfx (or maybe level data) is around 0x30000 though... then i found something else which does the same things to the same level at about 0x52000...

of course, then i gave up.

Um, Terranigma was officially translated. The game was released in PAL. My friend owned a copy.

Regardless, apart from IoG's 'You found an herb', there's not that much wrong with it.

Oh, why was it released in PAL but not here? Anyway, I like all 3. Whatever.

Hey, Cronic Wigger, how has YOUR editor been coming along, btw? I haven't seen anything on it in a while.

That's really one of the great mysteries of the universe.

For a newbie, it IS fairly overwhelming though. I'm finding it tough to learn all this new stuff for my search for AW2 data. Not to say I don't mind learning things, it's just a bit difficult to begin with...

As long as you have a little guidance from someone else to start, it becomes fairly easy in a short time. I'm not sure I could have learned from text docs alone, but I was taught, nonetheless, in about 30 minutes, and then I was able to start finding stuff right away on my own.

God damn it . . . I feel somewhat inspired to start searching and cracking. Sadly, I have too many projects going already to start anything new.

If I find and crack some of the compression, will someone else do anything with the data? Hmmm... which game to start with???

I've actually been busy hacking IOG fora couple of weeks. Made text translating code to find and edit text in tehe IOG script. The graphics are a snap to edit with something like tile molester. Item placement (In terms of what item is in each chest) is comming along. But honestly, outside of graphics hacking everything else I do in hex. Everything else just seems so... unnessesary.
