Alright, I'm posting this here because this seems to be the forum where most of it takes place. This lists a few things to not only make your life and experience here better, but to prevent people from thinking that you are unworthy of their respect. It's better to be respected and thought of as intelligent than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.Flaming/trolling/insultingOk, for the most part, there isn't too much of this. Arguably some people are very close to the line if not crossing over it on some occasions (eg: witeasprinwow), but on the occasions where these people do cross the line it is usually provoked. Basically, the best thing for me to say is, don't do it. However, there's a difference between expressing your opinion (which CAN be taken as an insult by the person you're reffering to) and name-calling or insinuating certian things. For example, let's take the recent incident which led up to Kon-Tiki's ban: Step 1 - In this thread, Kon-Tiki starts a thread with no content to encourage more replies with no content (although many of the replies do have content). This would have been better as a PM to merc than a thread. witeasprinwow stated an opinion in this thread and did not either threaten nor insult Kon-Tiki (although debatably he did act somewhat like a mod, calling him on the spam). Step 2 - In this thread, Kon-Tiki outright attacks witeasprinwow (and, for all of those who think I'm super-strict, keep in mind that I did not ban Kon-Tiki for this thread, merely let it serve as a warning to him). If you're going to even attempt to insult someone, at least try to make sense and sound intelligent, and give examples of why you say or believe what you do. None of that was done in this thread, and it only made people think less of Kon-Tiki. Step 3 - After not learning his lesson after attacking wite, Kon-Tiki flames an admin (and although I did not ban him for this thread, and probably wouldn't, I would have banned him for his "Location" info had he not been already banned). He says there's something wrong with the threads in the Display Case simply because they went in there so soon, implies that I'm responsible for people not showing intelligence around here, and also implies that I am a homosexual. What did he do wrong? Well, aside from flaming, my opinion is that if you're going to attack someone, do it right: Give reasons, make it sound intelligent, and act mature - insults will get you nowhere and, if anything, make you lose respect. To have people agree with you, give them reasons why they should. Just because you or others may have a negative opinion about someone doesn't mean it's justifiable or in any way persuasive. If you want to get someone banned, which I believe is what Kon-Tiki was trying to do: 1) Give reasons why the member should be banned (other than "hiz brayn iz fozilized sandpapir lolol"). Quoting specific posts (prefferably 2 or more) is ideal. 2) Show these are against rules (using the FAQ is a big help). 3) Ask other people to share intelligent opinions. 4) Make your thread coherent and clear in its purpose. Now, once that's said, another question: How do I prevent myself from being attacked?Well, people who are attacked typically do one or more of the following: - Reply with a 1-3 word reply, often a simple "Yes" or "I agree" (why do you agree?) - Create threads which aren't discussion material (for example, posting a long log of a stupid conversation with an AIM bot is not a good thread) - Show a lack of intelligence when posting (for example, saying or agreeing with something utterly ridiculous, like "Bush is a cow!") - Piss off other members by attacking them (For example, "Yiffy Kitten smells like goat cheese!") - Do not exercise common grammar and/or spelling rules, often making their posts incomprehensible. - Try to start a war against a particular member or members whom you have a vendetta against, be it legitimate or of your own doing for one of the other reasons listed here. Just TRY to exercise a little common sense and intelligence when you post. It isn't fun when the board collectively acts like it's 12 years old and has nothing worthwhile to say. Some tension is often good, because if two intelligent people disagree, they usually can argue with each other without flaming, but by presenting facts to back up their opinions. |
