Ugh, I feel the same way. It drives my dad nuts, he always bitches about how I'm depressed and psycho and need counsling.
About two years ago, when I didn't have any glasses and my dad would force me to open my blinds (he's given up since then), a house next to us had a guy sitting on his roof and facing my way. I couldn't see, so I couldn't know if he was looking at ME or what, but it really bugged me. He was there for a long time and eventually I had to leave my room. It gave me weird feelings.
I even keep the blinds on our screen door (right next to this computer) shut because we had a really bad experience with this bitch of a nosy neighbor. She'd look down on us from her second story window, and we got a giant umbrella over our outside bed thing, and a welcome mat in her full view

This used to be on our front porch, but my grandma visited one day so we couldn't have that.
Anyway, we set those up for her, as well as having some bad encounters, so she cuts down this big tree thing. Full view of anything we did. Boy it pissed us off. And I have many more stories.

Anyway.. If I have to I'll open the windows, but keep the blinds closed. I've never had air conditioning, though as a kid me and my friends would go in a parent's car and turn on the air conditioning as we'd play cards or something. That was fun. Otherwise, I just have to suck it up. It gets really hot in California. I have to keep my room toasty anyway because I have a pet lizard, so I never go there. We live right next to two 7-11s, and my mom goes there a lot to get slushies. It's not so bad.
Fans freak me out. Just being able to stick your fingers inside of one, I hate it. My brother has this game where an elephant shoots butterflies out of its long nose and little kids run around with nets trying to catch them. That has a fan with a ton of protection so you don't hurt fingers, but it still keeps you cool. I love it. It only runs on batteries so I can't just leave it on.
I'd rather be hot than cool.

I can't stand having the window shades up either...I don't like having sunlight indoors, and it feels like people can watch me. I especially hate an open window in a bathroom...I'm glad our house doesn't have a window in the bathroom.

My parents always like the shades/blinds/shutters (depending on the room) open though...

Well yeah, that's a matter of privacy. I have a window above our shower, but it has the blurry glass thing so you can't see in when it's closed.. plus I'm pretty short. I stand on my tiptoes to get air, sometimes I accidently make the water too hot and I feel like I'm going to pass out. So I wouldn't want a bathroom with NO windows..
I remember I went to a friend's place who had a giant clear window right next to the toilet that faced the backyard, no curtains. It drove me nuts.

The bathroom at my grandma's house has a normal window with no blurry glass thing (I don't know what they're called either)...it's RIGHT next to the toilet, and opens to the FRONT yard. For some reason, my grandma always keeps the blinds up, so whenever I'm at her house and have to use the bathroom I need to fiddle with the blinds for a while (I have not mastered the technique of those kind of blinds, the ones where you pull the string to move them down OR up...they always seem to go the wrong way.)

Air conditioning. Kinda. We can make it blow hot air into the house too.

Good that you moved from that room then. I would

My house doesnt have an a/c yet,and it never has. So we use fans, and it works out fine. Having windows open doesnt really help where I live, it's always 90-100 in the summer, and 70 or so at night.

A good, reliable air conditioning system that's positioned in just the right spot so that it distributes cold air to the entire house = the perfect way to tolerate summer without sticking to your bedsheets at night.

We have two large window A/C units, an exhaust fan in the roof of the attic (which is basically just a crawlspace on top of the house), and a ceiling fan in the dining room. All of that does the trick quite well because the house is well-insulated and small (one floor, which covers about 1200 square feet, plus the slightly smaller basement, which stays cool by itself).

Each of my family members has an A/C in their own bedroom along with accompanying fans. Our house consists of 3 floors and most of the house is nearly always unbearably hot excluding our individual bedroooms. Right now my room is paradise I have my A/C on maximum cool setting and 2x fans, one on my PC desk and another blowing on the back of my room/bed area.

I use my blinds because I just plain don't like sunlight, privacy definitely comes in second though

Opening window. I have a fan too.. but it's noisy so I only use it if I start melting. (Which means not so far this year, awfully not-very-hot still).

A/C in my mom's room, fans elsewhere, and you forgot opening the window.

What do you do in winter? I'd just put on some music.

They're weird, try pulling the string to the left or right. You'll get it eventually.

yeah, there are only two directions to pull it... so, banedon, i guess you'll live in a house with either shutters or pull down blinds?

Anyone who has never had central air is seriously deprived.
It's hot as all crap outside here and it's COLD (like 50F) in this house.

Me too. I have a hard time sleeping in silence, and it's hard to listen to music and not stay awake just to listen to the songs. A fan is nice for that, plus a cool down in the summer.
