I've started a redesign of the AcmlmBoard user interface. Maybe this will be implemented, maybe not, but in any case it will be fun to see what I end up with.

The first thing I did was Tasks. This is an idea I've been bouncing around for a lot of time. Tasks would, in a nutshell, collect all those small wishy-washy links and stick them all in one place, separated by scope. Confused? Look:
A picture says more than a thousand words, indeed.

This approach focuses on what you want to DO rather than what page you want to go to. This is why User CPs have become so popular.

One could also envision such a box for the main navigation. Choices like Change your settings (the Posts per pages, View layouts and Scheme choices in today's Edit Profile), Edit your layout (the header and footer fields, broken out and shown with a preview), Search for posts, Check recent threads (which would pull up a list with threads you've recently posted in), etc.

Opinions, please.

I'M no staff here, but on another board, singular buttons for closing, moving, probably splitting and trashing threads is more convenient to use two clicks ... to click on the link below to redirect to editthread.php and then to select the option what to to with it.
You also might add a ModCP for the mods here .. so they can do actions with several threads at once
By the way, it should be "Sticky thread" thread, if I'm not wrong. Stick is just the adjective form of it ^^
As for the Task feature itself, it might be a better overview to have everything concentrated in a box than having everything spread out on viewthread.php; it might be good.
On the other hand, where would that window you posted appear ?
It would be too big with its 255 x 244 pixels and even in 1152 x 864 it's pretty big if "attached" to a thread

We already have quick access links for those actions. Yes, the new version should probably ask for confirmation.

You "stick something to the wall" or "stick it to the man", you don't "sticky something to the wall" or "sticky it to the man". You "stick a thread", then it's "a sticky thread".

As for the position, it's undecided. Either floating in some way (on an edge or in a corner) or, a great option, appearing on right click. You'd be able to view/hide both the whole thing entirely or collapse and expand the various categories themselves, no matter where I end up placing them.

Heh, right-click windows-like context menu ... neat
Just a small configuration thing in the browser could allow that (iirc in Mozilla you can decide if websites allow to block or alter your context menu or not).
If it was even was customizable by adding or removing entries you would like ..
But that could be far too much work, I dunno know how difficult it might be to make a thing like that

I find nothing wrong with the current scheme of things. That's overly complex and graphically unappealing as well. It looks too much like an Apple *barf*

Like Gandalf said, right-click windows-like context menu are neat, but it won't be a lot harder to mkae a new thread? You could make it a option, though.

As I said, this is just an experiment. And ofcourse we wouldn't force everyone to use this, or even remove some of the old stuff. This would just be more logical.

And this has nothing to do with actual AcmlmBoard -programming-. It's UI design, and I find no better place for it than General Chat, where, besides, it will get the most feedback as well. And I want feedback.

Too Apple? Unless you meant the colors:

I'm pretty sure Yiffy Kitten meant the colors. It could be a lot easier on the eyes that it is now. (It looks doubly unappealing to me with my Night board scheme, too)

I understand what, I just don't understand why.

The font, the colors, and the icons just remind me of an older mac. Dunno if they still use that or not.
Leave it to you to overcomplicate things and give a "GUI" or "Interface" to normal buttons and links

Make sure we can select what board layout (not scheme) we want if more will be added.

Interesting idea but yeah, it reminds ME of macs as well!

I like the little pixel art icons; and I think it would be interesting to see something like that integrated into the board somehow Not sure really how though...

i like the idea of a pop-up menu indeed. I dunno how hard this would be, but maybe you should be able to quote a message using the menu. You right-click the post you want to quote, then you'd click the menu item "Quote", or something. You may want to rename the moderating tasks to "post tasks", since we can delete our own posts. Make sure the rest of them are hidden however.

White 'menus', and a font that sort of looks like Chicago, the first Mac's font. Well, maybe. I really just chose white because it's the simplest background when drawing those icons.

I've been thinking a bit about the 'collapsed' state of the whole thing. Maybe a pane of some sort would be nice?

Maybe you should use the pane with alt text when you mouse over each button?

yeah, I like the pane better. takes less space, most things can be visually associated to the tasks... but what of moving a thread? there you have to actually select the forum to move it to. And editing a thread will still need a new page, as will editing posts... so overall, I don't see how this will make things simpler for you... kinda just makes it so that you have two ways to do everything rather than just one... which seems kinda pointless overall. Maybe staff should just have an edit-view were they can edit the posts/thread all on the same page as the thread itself. it'd increase load time a smidge, but then you'd have even more clutter on the screen and be able to do everything from one page *points at sarcasm*

This is what we have now. This has served us well for almost two years soon, I think, and if we were to introduce the pane or something like it, it'd be a special mode. You'd either use that or you'd use what we have now. I didn't make the edit thread task yet because it's the only thing I couldn't make up a clear icon for.

I've also been thinking about 'dialogs' for this too. Something for accepting trashing or deleting the thread while also making a Move thread task a possibility, it would just show you what forum you'd want to move it to and hit OK instead of having to load a new page.

I think a pane that could be turned on/off in the profile (On being with pane, off being with the classic layout) would be totally radical, dude.

Of course, the pane would have to fit in with every background, meaning someone would have to do a different colored pane for each board scheme, and create something for the scheme that changes by time of day...

hmm... it possible to do one of those 'lil pop-up screens like a javascript alert or something that allows you to edit the post? I don't know if it's possible to put a text box in one of those, though. but that'd be cool 'cause you wouldn't even need a new page for editing a post/thread.

And we'll call it AcmlmXP.

Right-click? No. Nothing overrides my context menus. I like the pane idea.
