Well I was riding high, wowing everyone with how well I can make gfx, but Bit-Blade's CV hack just totally made me his bitch. So in turn I scrapped my CV hack with Grant DeNasty and went back to basics. Normal CV engine, sick GFX, and hopefully some aweomse level design. May I present to you CastleVania: The Wicked End. This is the only screen you get right now, more will come later. This will be a full GFX, Level, and Story hack of the Original Castlevania. |

Originally posted by Dr. Mario I wouldn't say that. Your hacks are very nice, as are you graphics. You should come to the darkside of custom palette hacks! mwahahahaha. Seriously though? Take the graphics/levels you have in your other dumped hacks. You'll have a complete hack in no time. |

I actually only have one dumped CV hack, which is the one with Grant. I just felt that with the new gameplay, the fun factor really suffered, but I am definately taking the enemy sprites and a few level concepts from that one for this hack. Oh and I'd never do something as evil as a custom palette... ...Or would I? (edited by Dr. Mario on 06-03-05 11:38 AM) (edited by Dr. Mario on 06-03-05 11:39 AM) |

I like the way you make gfx fixes in Castlevania. It looks really good. Keep up the good work bro.

Yeah man. Don't ever feel you're in anyone's shadow. You're both brilliantly talented people in this field. Scrapping things is never the answer, but believing is! good luck kid! |

Let me live in someone's shadow lol That's how I push myself to become better. Anyways, I scrapped that one CV hack with Grant in it, because it just really wasn't that fun. In order for the new jump mechanics to work, level design had to suffer greatly. I'm deciding to go back to basics, and just deliver a knock out hack using nothing but graphics and level design now. Oh, and where would Castlevania be without giant ornate crosses? |

Ok! I've been impressed by your work since way back when you released The Legend of Zelda- Curse From the Outskirts . It's still one of the more popular downloads on my website, says enough I think. This looks great so far too. |

I have the story made up, so here it goes. CastleVania: The Wicked End In Transylvania the name Belmont was always associated with a legacy of Vampire Hunters. Names like Leon, and Trevor became things of legend, but one Belmont lived to defeat Dracula more than once. His name was Simon Belmont. Simon has since grown into a wise old man and had children of his own, but one night in the middle of the star littered sky a castle rose up in the mountains, it was the dark caslte of Lord Dracula. With no one to protect his family and village, Simon puts on a dark hooded cloak, takes the legendary Vampire Killer in his hand, and head off to what will be his final battle. |

Leon Belmont? That name doesn't ring a bell -- was he from the GB games or something? You could always go with Richter -- as he's been in quite a few CV games -- even more than Simon. But meh. Anyway the hack looks good, although I'd tone down the number of stars in the sky -- or make the stars smaller. |

Interesting story concept, and certainly a bit more thought out than mine is, at the moment. So... will old man belmont kick some ass? He better show them young'ns what for. You seem to be making the same mistake I did with stars. The way you are using them, it makes the level feel as if light is glinting off the facets of a great many shiny rocks embedded in a wall. They don't look like stars because you are over populating the sky with the super bright shiny ones. To make it seem more authentically starry you would need to use the smaller, dot stars much more, and to use the brightests stars maybe only a few times per screen. But... if this is a cave level, keep it this way, maybe add some dark rock shapes in between using the darkest color. Where's your third color for the crosses/rocks? Is it black? You might consider using 0C as the darkest shade (seems to work well with the gray, since it isn't obnoxiously bright like... say, 02 is). Oh yes, and a note on your crosses. They are very... ancient looking (which is a good thing) but I think they would look even better if you gave the ends of them edges (I usually end up doing things like this but if you're tight on space don't bother). |

I'll keep that in mind with the stars, and definately check out how the crosses look with 0C. I'm trying to look for where I can fit ends to the crosses in, because that was the original idea, I think I can get rid of half of the spave the crosses take up, but I don't know how much I'll like the look of them. Oh and Leon is one of the first, or the first, Belmonts to kill a vampire (Well actually I just know he's a long time before Simon.) And I didn't use Richter because... well... he's a wuss. He cries and thinks too much. Simon just strolls into Dracula's room in the middle of the night and beats the crap out of a vampire without saying a word. Then he goes and eats an entire pot roast in one sitting... okay well he might be more insane than cool. Here's a picture comparing the two: |

No idea how possible this is to implement, but you need more stars at the top of the screen than at the bottom. It's fine to have lots of stars in the sky -- there were very few lights to obscure them back in the 1400s -- but there are still more of them overhead than on the horizon.

I fixed up the crosses, made a new floor, and got rid of a lot of the stars. Check it out now (edited by Dr. Mario on 06-08-05 08:47 AM) |

That looks really nice. I especially like the edges of the crosses. Is that a Celtic design?

I'm done with the GFX for level 1! I'm probably going to do this like I did with Orchestra of Despair, where I'll release a GFX-only Teaser hack, and then release a full level hack after that. Here's the first boss. She sits on the top of the corss and waits for you, it turned out pretty cool. |
