I suppose a general introduction for myself would be nice. My name is Chris, or phadedlife, whatever you feel is more appropriate. I've been a programmer for several years in various languages, as well as a graphic designer. I'm currently employed as a system tech for a local ISP.

So here's my idea:

I was thinking of developing a program that would allow seemless peer to peer sharing of ROMs, and the ability to play them easily with other users. To start with this, I would include SNES, NES, and Genesis. I would like to include a friends list, possibly some kind of ranking system later on.

So in order to start this project, I turn to you guys (The best forum I could find for emulation, not to mention a lot of other things). I had a few questions, maybe you guys could help.

This idea has been in my head for an eternity. I was planning on keeping it to myself to make money, but I figured it would be better to at least get the idea out in case I never get around to working on something this cool.

-----------

To start this project, I would need to acquire free open source (preferably C++ but others can be worked with) emulators. This is preferred over starting a completely new engine because that would be an incredibly time consuming project to work on 3 emulators as well as a peer to peer gaming network at the same time. So my question, is anyone aware of other open source emulators (Currently I have the source for SNES9x).?

I would need a few coders to start the project. A diverse group would be good, as so we can all help each other out.

A test server will be needed. Currently I'm too broke to afford my own server, so until I can get the funding a donation would be appreciated once the software is in beta.

Beta testers!

A whitehat hacker or two to test the stability and security of the software.

I'm sure there are plenty of other positions that would need to be filled of course. Eventually we could get advertising on the software to pay for server costs. I'd like this to be a free service but if this program exploads we may have to fall back on donations.

What are your thoughts? I'm really interested in starting this project soon, so let me know. I could probably even get a website up for it within a few days.

Best regards.

I know of few emulators that aren't open-source. What are you trying to do anyway? It sounds like some sort of P2P program for ROMs.

I like the idea....I would say it would be very popular....not to mention awesome....go for it...its sometimes hard to find roms...or atleast good ones, and to play them with others, and stuff easily, would be awesome..

fceu is open source I believe, so is zsnes....not sure about any genesis.

Did you ever use Gamespy Arcade? Or mPlayer.com? Possibly Heat.net? It will be a gaming network where you can play the roms online as well as openly share them with whoever you would want to.

I'm looking for whatever help anyone can spare, so if you're interested please e-mail me.

I haven't, no. From what I gather it's like hyped-up netplay meets P2P?
