I scrapped my old smb3 hack and started on a new one instead, since I thought the old one was bad and looked too much like the original game. Since people wanted to play my old hack so badly and I never got to release it, I decided to release an early demo of this one instead.

Currently, only world 1 is done, but all levels have been redone from scratch. The overworld has also been changed, and if you manage to finish the demo, you will also get a chance to have a look at the world 2 map (although the last screenshot down there shows is. ). There should be no (big) similarities in this hack, in other words.

Another reason why I release this demo, is that I need to know what people think about my level and overworld design before I continue. The more people who like it, the shorter time I will use on completing it. Both good and bad comments are welcome; although the hack may look/be good, there is always room for improvement. If you find any glitches, bugs or areas that look similar to the original ones (although I doubt you will find any), please tell me as well.

The title screen will be changed when I come up with a title. If you have an idea, then tell it to me at once.

Download (zip file)

If the file cannot be found, it is just my GeoCities account's bandwidth that has run out as usual. Try again widthin an hour or two then.

Oh, I almost forgot: Here are some screenshots:

WOW! Nice stuff! Pointers:

-1st Overworld Map... Your dancing bushes would look nicer if you made the water a darker shade of blue.

-World 1 levels... They ALL look cool.

-World 1 Airship... Well, pink should work as well as any other color for an airship, however it would look neater if the two shades that make up the ship had one color that was darker than the other.

-2nd Overworld Map... Awesome! The colors are really cool!

DurfarC,

You know, if Geocities might be a problem, then try Freewebs.com. It's pretty reliable when it comes to bandwith. Now let me shut up and play your hack!

This is a very good hack! I really like the palettes, though, as Schwa said, the hills would look a bit better if the water was a darker blue, and the brown stripes in the pipes in the underground level clash with the green.

Otherwise, the level design is very original, levels are challenging without making me pull my hair out, and the world maps are well done. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the replies and to all those people who played it, I hope you enjoyed it.

As you suggested, I changed the colour on the water and the dancing bushes to a darker shade of blue (I don't bother to update the screens just for that), and it looks better now. I also realized that the pipes in the underground level were ugly, the fact is that the brown on them is the same colour as the wall. I made the green darker instead, and they look good now. The airship though is already in two shades, you may just have missed it. Oh, and actually, you can thank this thread for the pink pallette.

Oh, and just in case people didn't know: World 2 will not be a desert world in this hack.

And I have to thank you for saying that. I wasn't sure about the levels' difficulty, when you've created the levels yourself you know where everythings appear and how to beat them. My goal is exactly to make challenging, but possible levels.

I don't know anything about their bandwidth, but I know that everything I download at a Freewebs site will be downloaded at the amazing speed of 1kbps. XD. And I have ADSL, which is much faster than that. I just found out that the filesize on the zip weren't that big, so it shouldn't be a problem.

DurfarC,

It's not that bad , but I did have a problem with bandwidth on Geocities.

BTW, I like your hack. Sometimes, I get surprised by things I don't expect and die.

Eh... can't say the levels were too challenging. Pretty easy, even, except for the airship, which surprised me in the ramp up in difficulty--but it's an airship ! Then again, it's World 1 still, so I guess I shouldn't expect too much yet.

But I really like the designs for these levels... a lot! Maybe it's because the level design is based on a lot of the kind of stuff I like... the moving platform with the Fire Chomps, the wonderfully placed Roto-Discs all around the castle, the funky bolt jumps on the airship... the kind of stuff I can really appreciate !

Really, these are possibly the nicest-designed Super Mario Bros. 3 levels I've ever seen... so really can't wait to see more of it !

With recent SMB3 hacks that's been popping out, I just can't play the original version, in other woids, this is a pretty good demo you came up with. I'll be waiting for the final product, whenever you get around to it.

Nice hack! All I really have to say is that the overworld maps are a touch too linear, even though you still have a few different paths you always wind up at the same spot. Maybe open up a few forks in the next world and it'll be all nice and good.
