Just wondering -- how do you guys cope with illness?

At the moment, I have a big cyst (as I'm sure most of you are aware) and I'm awaiting a second opinion. I'm starting to get really frustrated by the lack of answers that medical science is giving me here, and I'm finding myself worrying about this, and also in a reasonable amount of pain.

I'm wondering, of any of you who have been in similar situations with illness, how do you guys cope with things like waiting for answers from doctors / worry / pain, etc?

I personally don't cope well. I can handle bad news, I can handle the sound of the death bell tolling, I can handle physical pain, however... It's the waiting. It's the waiting that gets you, drives a man crazy. I've been a worrier all my life, the days before an operation or invasive dental visit get to me like nothing else. I pace my bedroom, I find myself with a hand on the wall, gripping in futility and uncertainty, my skin every so slightly moistened with nervous sweat. Almost every medical condition I have can be traced back to stress in some way. If I'm not murdered, I will die of worry.

This might sound short-sighted, but the most effective way to combat worry is to ignore your problem. For as long as you cannot do anything to help the situation, it is useless to worry. Ignoring it at least lets you enjoy yourself in the moment. You can deal with the problem itself when you actually have options presented to you, when you're actually in a dialogue with your doctor. Other than that, try and live in the moment.

Worry is certainly my biggest problem, but then I do have depression/generalised anxiety problems to begin with.

Being in hospital for that day last week was scary, knowing that I was supposed to have surgery (that never happened) and wondering when it was going to happen.... I've never had my stomach tie itself up in that many knots before.

There really is no magical cure for worrying really, when it comes to things such as this. The best thing I can think of is to just distract yourself by doing a bunch of things you like to do in mass. There's nothing you can do about it now until you get the results from your second opinion so you might as well worry about it when the time comes if that's even necessary.

By the way, have you read this at all? It seems as if birth control pills might be of some help.

If it's any consolation, keep in ind that you're still young and it's MUCH better that it's happening now instead of when you're older and your body starts to lose it's ability to cope with things like this, and when your chances of a successful surgery/recovery drop drastically.

Pfft, you'll be fine by the way.

Leg -- I'm on birth control pills and have been for... five years? They ain't doing shit in regards to the cyst -- the cyst hasn't changed at all during the week, it's still 12.8 x 11.1 x 7.4 cm with a volume of 560ml. My cycle also is not affecting said cyst.

Doctor says that -- and this was speculation btw -- they might not have operated because they may have had to remove my right ovary if they did. Pfft... I like my ovary. I'm rather attached to it, it's been there all my life.

And yeah, I have been distracting myself -- Modern Art has benefited greatly from worry-distraction activities such as drawing recently.

Well, I'm a huge worrier too. I find that if you just do something you like (Like you said, Modern Art) then it shouldn't mentally bother you.

I'm surprised you didn't get a second opinion yet.

Good job on getting a second opinion. You never know how much one doctor can screw something up. It's best to be safe. A friend I had died of cancer at age 13 b/c one of his doctors was incompetent. They figured this out too late and treatment was not effective enough to save him.

Doctors suck, my mom was having problmes with her tooth, or so she thought
and the dentist couldnt find anything worng and sent her to her doctor, the doctor couldnt find anything wrong and sent her back to the dentist... she has so meny root canals done to find the problem..... the dentist and doctor kept sending her back and forth with no answers blaming eachother....
Finaly a 3rd party (after a year) found that she had a tumor growing in her jaw that was pushing aginst her tooth, aparently a wisdom tooth grew in sideways and formed a cyst in her jaw... lucky it wasnt cancerous....

My point is you shouldnt trust the frist thing the doctor says if they cant figure out whats wrong or how to fix it... find someone that does know what to do. Dont let them give you the run arround

It's hard to get any specific information on cysts in general, Kas... but based on what I pulled out of Wikipedia, I'd guess Taryn is above average but certainly not anywhere near a record.

The main thing is that she's doing all right now aside from the discomfort, but I would think there'd have to be a way to reduce the size of the cyst before removing it... I mean, we're talking a fair sized object here.

well, couldn't you like, siphon some of the fluid out? That'd surely reduce the size of it.

I just talk with my mom, who is a nurse... I seriously never had to worry about medical stuff when you have wandering experts at home. Then, knowing too much is not always helping...

At least the cyst isn't the size of a rather large watermelons, I heard a few of thoose cases from my mom so...

Cyst is going to be removed!

I have to be admitted to hospital for surgery on the 15th.

I'll be there for four to five days recovering.

There is a chance I will lose my right ovary. (very high chance)
There is a chance that this is cancer (chance factor unknown)

Would there be any problems with losing one of the ovaries? I better ask my mom about it...

Just hope it's not cancer, and if it is... well hope it's easily treated. (a few types of cancer is easier to treat than others... sadly there is no perfect cure for cancer yet )

Trapster: That depends on your definition. All cancer can be treated and cured if it's caught in time and hasn't spread. The odds aren't 100%, but they're certainly in your favor. The more advanced it is, the lower the odds.
