I'm going to see it, the ads made it looks stupid, in my opinion, but after reading the writer's comments (and the fact that he didn't see the 1971 movie until he was in the middle of the second draft). I liked the first movie, and I love the book. Can't wait!

I haven't seen any ads for it, but I'd like to see it.

I want to see if it's as tripped out as the original

I voted for the stupid looking one.

It looks lame-o supreme-o. Why are they even remaking this movie? What's the point? The original was flawless so there's really no room to improve on it. I guess I just don't get it. Some movies are gems and should just be left alone.

Depp is a great actor, but only Gene Wilder can play Willy Wonka.

I loved the 1971 version because of its trippiness and gadzillions of humorous details all over the place (and because Gene Wilder PWNS J00), so I will have to take a look at the new movie at some point. I think I will enjoy the darker, more true to the book tone of the new movie. (I preferred the kinder, gentler 1971 movie to the book, which seemed too sad and depressing to me in some points because it didn't make me hate the bad kids enough to revel in their permanent disfigurements at the end, but the new movie looks like it will portray the villains in an amusingly garishly loathsome manner so that we'll all want to cheer as they meet their demise. The movie adaptation of Matilda, another Roald Dahl book, accomplished this beautifully.) However, I am quite disappointed with the characterization of Willy Wonka that we've seen thus far in the teaser trailer. I like Johnny Depp, and he's done a terrific job at portraying other eccentric recluses (please refer to Scissorhands, Edward), but the new Wonka is just...ew. OK, I like the velvety gothic old-fashioned outfit...but why does he visually resemble the unholy offspring of Michael Jackson and that pixyland.org Peter Pan dude? What gives with the thin, nasal, high voice, the FUGLY pageboy, and the ridiculous, very out of character line "Chewing gum is really gross - chewing gum I hate the most"? Like some dignified, old-fashioned guy shut up in his factory away for the world for how many umpteen years is going to speak so casually (and with such a boring choice of words). That had better not be representative of the final dialogue.

I'd probably want to check it out down the road considering how much I liked the original book + the original movie. And I think Johnny Depp's a good actor as well... so at least it's got those two points working for it so far. It'll be hard to produce something that lives up to those standards though, much like what Rydain said.

*high-fives Leg* The original Wonka movie is still one of my all-time favorites. It's funny...I read various people's complaints about it (the not exactly high-tech production, the inaccuracies to the book, etc.), but I think all that stuff actually works pretty well. I like the bizarrely quiet and somehow dusty feel of the visuals. Orange and green Oompa Loompas portrayed by little people are much cooler than ones that look like average-colored people shrunk down to knee height. I don't think that the subplot with Charlie stealing fizzy lifting drink took away from the point of the movie at all. (It added a chance at redemption and gave Wonka a reason to try to piss Charlie off enough to take his Gobstopper to Slugworth, and he of course passed that test.) And the science teacher, who reminded me of something out of Monty Python, ruled.

With that said...one thing the new movie might improve on is making Augustus a really irritating pain in the ass. In the first movie, he didn't seem terribly bratty to me because he didn't say much at all. Yeah, he was chubby and liked to eat...ohnoes stop teh presses roffles!!!11 Turns out that the actor who played him was some random German kid who could barely speak any English at all. It took a hell of a lot of work to get him to say his few lines, so that ruled out the idea of portraying the character as a loudmouthed brat.

What do you guys think of the rest of the cast thus far? Judging from the posters, the new Augustus and Veruca look great. Augustus is a cartoony fat slob, and Veruca has a right-on prissy polished rich girl look. I don't get Violet, though. In the 1971 movie, she was a hilarious motormouthed nerd. (Chewing the same piece of gum for months and bragging about how you stick it behind your ear for safekeeping is quite nerdy, methinks...) The new Violet looks like a boring soccer kid from the 'burbs. I don't have any opinion on Charlie or Mike yet.

And I totally agree with Leg - Gene Wilder IS Willy Wonka. There are certain characters who just aren't the same portrayed by someone else. A non-Wilder live action Wonka is like recasting Al Bundy. I know Depp will do his best with the character, but still.
