It features electricity free appliances, blocks of ice, and an extensive special clothing line made of special fabrics for that hip-modern Amish style... The largest concentrations of Amish in the United States are in Holmes County, Ohio and Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. | If it's like Lancaster, PA, then there are probably anywhere from 2,000-5,000 Amish there. I don't know how many Amish are in Lancaster, honestly, but I would be surprised if it were over 5,000. How big is the store? If it's as big as a regular Wal*Mart, that's a big risk they're taking. And I doubt the Amish would like the whole concept of Wal*Mart too. It's kinda the epitome of corporate America, AKA the opposite of what they find all holy or whatever other BS reason they have for living in 1500AD |

| I'd be okay with this if I didn't believe Wal-Mart is the worst thing to happen to this economy since the Great Depression. When your prices are not set by suppy and demand you create a "blackhole" in the market and general instablity. I would cite my sources but since everyone who reads this who shop at Wal-Mart will still shop at Wal-Mart I won't bother. If you really want to see "the Dark Side" I suggest doing some research. |

Unfortunatley, to be able to pass on such savings, they must pay their employees lower wages, have low overhead with large "Warehouse" layout stores, and buy products en masse. It's a drawback to the whole large retailer concept, but they manage to make it work. |

| Ziff: We could argue economics until the cows come home. Whether or not it's sustainable, there are more theories on that than there are theories about the universe. It's been sustaining itself for the past 15+ years, and the economy as a whole is more stable than it has been prior to that (note I said "As a whole"). Whether or not it's benefitted the job market, small business, and so forth is still up in the air. As a whole, capitalism can never sustain itself for prolonged periods. Inflation is a never-ending cycle, and the value of currency depreciates exponentially over time. Markets, as a whole, are irreperably flawed. Expecting the Amish people to buy into the whole idea of Wal*Mart though is a stretch. As I said, they see Wal*Mart as a modern, faceless corporation. The Amish people do businiess with each other often without currency. They try to avoid using money when possible. Granted, they do need it in some ways, but for the most part, they are all self-sustaining communities. I think it'll fail, but that's my prediction. I could be dead wrong. |
