They're opening a new Wal-Mart in Ohio tomorrow that caters to Amish shoppers. It features electricity free appliances, blocks of ice, and an extensive special clothing line made of special fabrics for that hip-modern Amish style...

Think Im joking?

(sorry, only found it cached)

I saw it on the local news. Why Ohio news is showing in Tennesee, I'll never know.

New link via Google News.

This is... very strange. It caters to the Amish obviously, and that's great... but strange. Especially since it's probably the only store in the entire Wal-Mart chain doing this.

Oh well. Even the Amish need their big blocks of ice from somewhere.

The Amish have done just fine for many, many years without the outside interference of major conglomerates. Wal-Mart doesn't NEED to do this. As usual, they're just looking scraping the bottom of the barrel for a way to make even more money, and it makes me very, very sick.

I know what you mean man. What's this world coming to when a huge business will do anything for money?

By "will it ever stop?" I meant will Wal-Mart's measures taken to make more money ever stop...

The thing I don't get, is I thought the Amish didn't use money, but rather, bartered...

It's rather genius, actually. It's like how if they built a Wal-Mart in China, then it would sell primarily things that Chinese people would like to buy. If they built another Wal-Mart here in the U.S. that only sold polish sausage, then not many people would go there.

Not as long as there's money to make. That's how big business works.

Are there really that many Amish? You rarely even hear of them. Seems odd that they would bother.

HH, here is info from wikipedia...

The Amish reside in close-knit communities in 22 states of the United States as well as Ontario, Canada. The largest concentrations of Amish in the United States are in Holmes County, Ohio and Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. By state, the largest Amish population is in Ohio, and the second largest in Pennsylvania. There are an estimated 100,000 Amish in the United States in all groups, and another 1500 in Ontario, Canada.

Since Ohio holds the largest Amish population, so it seems wal-mart is a little smarter than some people give it credit for

If it's like Lancaster, PA, then there are probably anywhere from 2,000-5,000 Amish there. I don't know how many Amish are in Lancaster, honestly, but I would be surprised if it were over 5,000.

How big is the store? If it's as big as a regular Wal*Mart, that's a big risk they're taking. And I doubt the Amish would like the whole concept of Wal*Mart too. It's kinda the epitome of corporate America, AKA the opposite of what they find all holy or whatever other BS reason they have for living in 1500AD

Woah, I can see why they would want to tap into that market then. Anyone think it'll work though? They'd probably be rather offended if the place actually used electricity, and it'd be hard for a big chain store like that not to. (<-- Not too informed on the ways of the Amish. )

There's two sides.

One: Amish people get a store that caters to them. Good.

Two: More people hired for poor wages. Bad.

I'd be okay with this if I didn't believe Wal-Mart is the worst thing to happen to this economy since the Great Depression. When your prices are not set by suppy and demand you create a "blackhole" in the market and general instablity.

I would cite my sources but since everyone who reads this who shop at Wal-Mart will still shop at Wal-Mart I won't bother.

If you really want to see "the Dark Side" I suggest doing some research.

No thanks. I like buying merchandise for cheaper. There's nothing you could possibly say or show me that will convince me to pay MORE for stuff. I think that goes for most people too.

Interestingly. All commodity prices that exist today are pretty much artificially inflated.

Wal*Mart, and every other major retailer, does set their prices by supply and demand. Why do you think they clear out stuff every now and then? Rollbacks? Cause people aren't buying it.

Wal*Mart, Home Depot, Lowes, Target, and the like dictate the prices they are willing to pay to their suppliers. They go to the lowest bidder, and pass the savings on to you. Unfortunatley, to be able to pass on such savings, they must pay their employees lower wages, have low overhead with large "Warehouse" layout stores, and buy products en masse. It's a drawback to the whole large retailer concept, but they manage to make it work.

Unfortunately, big box economy is unsustainable as it constantly creates massive debt holes due to the requirement of constant purchases on all sides of the business model.

Ziff: We could argue economics until the cows come home. Whether or not it's sustainable, there are more theories on that than there are theories about the universe. It's been sustaining itself for the past 15+ years, and the economy as a whole is more stable than it has been prior to that (note I said "As a whole"). Whether or not it's benefitted the job market, small business, and so forth is still up in the air.

As a whole, capitalism can never sustain itself for prolonged periods. Inflation is a never-ending cycle, and the value of currency depreciates exponentially over time. Markets, as a whole, are irreperably flawed.

Expecting the Amish people to buy into the whole idea of Wal*Mart though is a stretch. As I said, they see Wal*Mart as a modern, faceless corporation. The Amish people do businiess with each other often without currency. They try to avoid using money when possible. Granted, they do need it in some ways, but for the most part, they are all self-sustaining communities. I think it'll fail, but that's my prediction. I could be dead wrong.
