Well then, I must be non-American born... or... an alien? Because despite being born in America, I've done 4 years of highschool in 2, and gotten a 4.0 GPA while doing it. Seriously, I believe it all depends on the person. No matter what culture you're in, you can't force a dunce to get all As or make a bright person into an idiot. |

Sounds more like you're just looking for excuses. If you're really at school to learn, you'll generally do better. Some people are naturally better able to reason certain types of concepts and remember things better than others, so they'll do better than most people academically, regardless of effort. I know this is true, because otherwise I should be a high school dropout instead of a college student with a scholarship. However, this usually isn't the case for most high achievers. It's usually related to motivation and their home environment and such. Assuming there isn't grade inflation, GPA has more to do with time management, organization, and studying skills than it does with intelligence. I never considered most of the people in the top 10% of my senior class to be exceptionally intelligent, even though at least half a dozen of them had perfect GPAs (that same upper 10% was mostly white BTW). My school wasn't exactly suffering from grade inflation either. Anyway, you tend to see more motivation, organization, and studying with kids who have foreign parents, because their parents are more likely to be extremely motivated themselves. After all, they did learn a new language and move to another country, so they probably weren't considered 'average' where they used to live either. It's only natural for kids to adopt the behaviors and attitudes of their parents. Also, I've noticed Asian communities tend to be big on gossip and family pride, so there appears to be an exceptional amount of pressure placed on first generation American-Asian youths to perform and do well by their parents. Of course, if you work your best (which isn't necessarily your hardest), and you still can't do well in school, then you're probably just stuck on the low end of the Bell curve or something. Unless you want to be an engineer or something, I wouldn't worry about it. |

Who said you need to be born out of america to be smart? I have a GPA of 4.0 right now, and I was born in america. I know some foreigners at my school who take failing to a new level. Its not entirely where you are born, its a combination of that, how much you care to learn, and how much you can actually learn. Then again, some people just have a knack for succeeding without actually trying |

Then again, some people just have a knack for succeeding without actually trying Those are the people I have a dislike for because I don't get those short term rewards. However, in the long run, it should all work out... anyways, education goes two ways, it's your responsiblity for you to work with the system and it is the system's ability for you to learn. When one of those two fail, sub par scores are the result. Therefore, the question then goes to be, whose at fault |

HULLL YAHHH! GOGO MONTANA! Anyway, I don't want to jump the gun here but I'm getting the feeling that some of you non-Americans seem to think that we have a lack of great achievers. Maybe I just misinterpreted... (edited by Darth Legious on 05-22-05 07:13 PM) |

I believe that there is a gap, the only reason being that american families are not as strict as those others, which in turn dishes out a load of slackers. | |||

Well, sorry If I started this thread badly, I guess it's only for the kids in my school and schools around me. The highest ranking students in my school are clearly from another country. Maybe it is their discipline. I just haven't seen one american kid in my school who has good grades. |

Its really 3 things that make a good education 1. A teacher that knows how to teach 2. A student willing to learn 3. A parent that cares and will get involved I guess i was lucky. My mom always was helping me out and cared about my education, and most of the time i had good teachers! Even if your naturaly gifted or not everyone can be taught to learn.. and a great teacher teaches students how to learn.. and we just dont do that anymore.. unless your lucky you wont get a teacher that will teach you to learn they just expect you to absorb the info they give you... It dosnt matter if your from another country or are born asian.. a friend of mine is asian and hes they lazyest (and some times the dumbest) person i know.. and he flunked a few classes... Originally posted by Darth LegiousOriginally posted by Graviteh If not, then what is the ethic make up of your school? i don't think it matters that much. At my school, there was no majority ethnicity--as a result, getting top grades was fair game although the honors level were dominated by asians... so yeah, i dunno, it seems that it is futile to say that american born individuals can't be productive in their lives. doing well all depends on your ability to deal with the system and make the most of it. it is sad that education is not uniform but it is every student's responsiblity to do well regardless of what they are given |
