Then you'll just LOVVVE what he says here!

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Microsoft founder Bill Gates sees mobile phones overtaking MP3s as the top choice of portable music players, and views the raging popularity of Apple's iPod player as unsustainable, he told a German newspaper.

Personally, I hate cell phones and I don't have an iPod. Regardless of whether or not iPods will last a long time I just don't see cell phones are overtaking the portable mp3 market. I'm no expert on the subject, so that's just my best guess.

Pretty interesting I suppose. I know people who spend 500+ dollars already on cell phones as it is. Wont cell phones cost like $800 now if they do implement a MP3 feauture? O well eventually things will be so small and so anvanced. (Actually they already are for the most part.)

They aren't yet. But phones are becoming more than phones. They're becoming the single portable electonic device. Having one device that replaces all of your portable electronics has massive selling potential. If it's done well, it's useful, fun, chic too.

My phone is already a e-mail client, txt message device, phone, portable megadrive, almost a PC... It's the way things are heading. The mobile phone is threatening to consume every single consumer electronics product ever devised. Why? Because we need the most powerful tool available. The mobile phone is aiming to become that.

I give it 2 years and then cell phones will displace direct MP3 and other media players.

N-gage anyone?

To be honest, the risc of having alot of functions on a mobile is that a few features tend to get subpar. Or that a few features that works great for one thing just totally destroy it for other purposes.

Another bad thing with all in one thing... well if it breaks.

Bill gates have said alot in the past, he was the same man who said that 640K is enough for anybody after all. And that open source is communism...

I have a old cellphone that works remarkable well, I can call with it and that's enough. I barely use the SMS function. And I do have the money for a new mobile phone, but I rather buy a few games for that money.

He said that open source was software communism.
But while we're talking about this, you should listen to this guy. He speaks the truth.

You need to diffrence between Truth and opinions. And this article is very flawed.

Companies like Red Hat started off as an open-source organisation and they now package up open-source code and sell it for their own gain. I'll let you form your own opinions on that smilie face.

Ladies and gentlemen, GNU have stated in the beginning that Open source is free as in freedom and not as free beer. (or gratis or whatever). There is nothing wrong with selling it, as long they still do provide the source. (none is gonna sue me if I start selling slackware distros for 1000$ each beside my garage, as long I distrubte the source)

Open source is not meant to blow away propetiry software, I doubt it ever will. I think they will exist side by side. And boy, Open source does include alot of money. There is alot of money going around, usually investments from companies. So I really don't see the logic behind that article. What, he is afraid of a econmical collapse with open source projects? Tsk, I think it just will be about the same.

I get the impression that the article states that open-source is anti-capitalistic. Which is far from the truth...

Phones have LONG been taking over functions of other devices (ie, calculators, portable games devices, PDA's, etc) it's not surprising that they'll also take over MP3 things.

However, it hasn't meant that people stopped buying calculators, gameboys, PDA's etc before either. In fact, a lot of people just want a phone that is *gasp* a phone!

My problem with phones taking over a lot of functions is that they seldom do it as well as a standalone device. I'd rather have seperate devices that do the job well...

Meh... I prefer the days when cell phones were phones. Yeah, the ones with a two-line LED display.

I liked the Zach Morris (from Saved by the Bell) models. The ones that were bigger than your head.

I remember my second-cousin had a mobile phone when they were new, and it was about as big as a housebrick. He had it in his car and it was huge. It was so weird too to be driving along and have it ring...

In my opinion, iPods are the crappiest, most overrated MP3 players out there. There are far better models for the same price, and ones that you can use other LEGAL services other than just iTunes for.

One thing he said I found a kick, though...

"The consumer is always unpredictable. In principle, you can only throw products onto the market and then learn from your mistakes," he said.

So his answer is to just keep tossing out mistakes until you get it right?

I, personally, wouldn't be so gung-ho about making mistakes. But I don't have billions that I can afford to lose until I do get it right.

I thought that quote was funny too; he was talking about the X-Box fKitten Yiffer but what I thought was weird is that he said "unpredictable". A huge majority of people were saying the X-Box was going to suck years before it came out.
