I've been having a strange problem with my CD drive. It keeps locking itself.  The first 2 times I noticed it, I tried to burn a CD but the process failed for some reason. (Maybe I need to erase the CD-RW before burning to it? I could have sworn you could add files though...) After this the drive would not open (whether by clicking Eject or pushing the button) until I closed most of the programs that were open (once it actually popped right open on its own when I did so). Recently it's decided to lock again for no reason that I can see, and the only way I could get it back open was to reboot. Is there some fix for this, or a program that can unlock it? (I don't doubt it's possible, hdparm in Linux can do it.  ) |

| There should be a very small hole which can be pushed with something like the inner of a biro to open the drawer. If not, a reboot should work for sure. Other than else: Does this happen to CD-Rs too and how old is the drive ? |

| There's no way to do that shy of restarting the computer that I know of. I've even tried cutting power to the drive and restoring it - that works, but Windows doesn't recognize it anymore. It used to happen to me if I burned too many discs at once. The 10th or so in a row would fail, and get "stuck" in the drive. I learned to let my burner "cool down" a minute or so after every disc. CD-Rs and RWs are re-recordable. As long as you leave the session open on a CD-R, you can write on it until it's full. Same with a CD-RW. You shouldn't have to erase it beforehand. Maybe your burner just doesnt like multi-sessions? |

Uh, Windows.  Drag-and-drop burning. (Nero doesn't seem to work right; it reads the disc as 700MB one minute and 450 the next. ) I'm not sure if the session is open or not. The paper clip idea, I could use, but then Windows still thinks the disc is in there and tries to read it, which I really doubt is good for it... I think the burner might be dying but it should still open, and judging by how it does so when I close stuff, I'm guessing it's a Windows issue. |

| i sometimes have that problem...i think it is a combination of windows, the burner, and the burner software. It appears that when a CD is burned, a command is sent to the burner to prevent eject from working. However, the command to reenable the eject button somehow never gets sent. So, if you can figure out how to send this "command", then you should be able to unlock the CD rom drive without rebooting | |||

| Strange, I've just recently started having similar problems, even though I don't burn discs very often at all. The drive just doesn't want to open unless I close down a few things first. Aside from that, it works fine. Could a recent Windows update be causing this problem, perhaps? | |||

or maybe it is spyware  only way to see if the drive is at fault is to move the drive to another computer and see if it behaves the same way. For a CD-ROM drive to eject does not require the OS to tell it to eject. However, the OS can tell the CD-ROM drive to disable the eject button, which is why I suggested spyware might be involved. Not unless the act of windows detecting the CD-ROM drive sends the "disable eject" message... |

| I guarantee you there's no spyware on that computer. I check it regularly, hardly ever install anything (other than Windows updates), and use Firefox. It's not my primary Internet-browsing computer anyway. Try again. |

| Not all spyware can be filtered out...but anyways, probably the connector between the eject button is wearing down or something. Have you tried using the eject in windows to see if that might do it (right click on drive and select eject)? | |||

| Well... -I do spyware and virus scans about twice a month with no results as of late. Nothing unusually suspicious is happening either. -Right-click -> eject doesn't work either. -Why would spyware lock the CD drive? Also I doubt it's an update problem. I only install the most important updates, since I turned auto-update off. (Force-install SP2 my ass. ) I know there are commands to enable and disable the button (how else would it get disabled?) but I don't know any program that can do them. Or how to make one that can. |

| I've had problems with the CD drive on my old 486 not ejecting... Personally, I don't understand why something physical like opening the CD tray needs to be a software thing that requires the system to be turned on. Why can't it be a mechanical operation, like ejecting a floppy? |

| because a CD uses a motor to move the tray in and out. So, if you encase the CD into some type of protector and then feed the protector like a disc, then the thing could probably be mechanical. I believe other implications is finding a way to hold the CD in one place while spinning it? |
