| You guys are having a field day with this one. Alien sexes probably wouldn't be all that fundamentally different than you may think. Male and Female seem to work very well. Few advanced multicelluar/animal organisms on earth reproduce either hermaphoditacly, like snails, or by division, like some single cell organisms. Anything else is just clutter. What POSSIBLE role could a third gender play in reproduction? I'm not saying it's not possible, but it certainly isn't practical. Likely if there are aliens, then they would reproduce sexually like we do, only... way fucking different. Different fluids, different intercourse methods, different anatomy. With human luck, if a man tried to screw an alien their dicks would probably get burned off by female alien sex acid. And gorillaz, ziff? | Sexual reproduction is really inefficient - at least the way it's done on Earth. Millions of sperm are wasted each time. Not to mention the energy involved to create and release and copulate and so forth. Just because it's the main means of reproducion on Earth doesnt mean shit. Every species on Earth evolved from common ancestry, as far as we know. One sexually-reproducing species may have been the ancestor of millions of current ones. If there are alien lifeforms, there's a damn good chance they have a more efficient way of mating we can't even begin to imagine. | More efficient, possibly, but the general concept (a male and female coming together and having sex) will probably be the same, though the means would be different. But who are we to say? Just because they are aliens automatically means they are better than us? For all we know they could have a MORE inefficient method. Like that crazy 3 sex concept. A more efficent way would be a direct co-merging of DNA. This method may not require a species to have male and female, just someone for the DNA and pregancy to take place it (whoever decides to take the DNA, I would guess). Of course, if they don't even have anything like reproductive DNA that totally invalidates this idea. Just being one sex seems kind of boring. We are defined by sex, and entire male and female sub cultures have developed becase of it. What the hell kind of world would a single sex dominant alien race have? Would there be less wars from less inner conflict? |

| Well... I still say they would need at least three years. I doubt it would be something worth doing anyway, as it may be expensive. I don't think that replicating that kind of environment will be easy at all. It's more of a matter of the intense pressure (I think the site said something like 2'000 times higher than either the surface or the water at the surface?). Seems like more trouble than it's worth. You're probably right, though. If they can even managed to reach that kind of environment in the first place, they should be able to recreate it in a lab. Still sounds dangerous, though.
