Well, I hope it'd be fixed (Firefox 1.0.4 anyone?) before anyone exploits this on a public site. But, you basically just turn off JavaScript to be unaffected.

The idea of an exploit doesn't surprise me, I doubt that any networking application has no bugs/exploits. (Although if you're Microsoft, things like WordPad can be dangerous too)

It's further proof that FireFox isn't perfect, like everyone advertises it to be.

I will add to that though. I think it is a really good quality browser. I believe by far its better then IE, some may so otherwise. Opera is also a good quality browser.

So no news on patch yet eh? I hope they come out with one soon.:/

Everyone knows that Firefox isn't perfect. It's just a lot most secure amd advanced than IE.
That's why people use it i suppose.

The real news here is that slashdot bothered reporting this.

That's basically all I have to say.

I personally never said it's perfect. But compared to IE, it's a hell of a lot better. Just the fact that it has great plugins alone makes it better than IE. Add in how much safer it is, and Firefox wins hands down.

That's what, 1000 IE exploits to each Firefox one?

I used to think the same way.

Then I tried Firefox. I played around with adblock. I never went back.

Not seeing banner ads on any webpages is BEAUTIFUL. No popups. Googlebar rocks. And you say IE isn't safe?

I bet that AIM virus link automatically executes itself in IE. Not in Firefox!

Why can't there be a browser where security holes are all clogged up with helpful mushrooms. and uma thurman.

As a Mac user, I don't have to be concerned with many of these issues.. Also as a Mac user, Internet Explorer flips me the fat bird. So. Craps on them. >8(
I like Safari more than Firefox, but I use Firefox for things I don't want my parents to see (such as this message board, for instance).. in Safari I can't delete individual items from the history trail. =\

I'll say. For some reason, every web site I go to at work has these damn LowerMyBills.com banner ads that keep trying to open pop-up windows. They've installed SP2, so that's not an issue. But I've NEVER seen them at home. Managed to miraculously convert my parents to Firefox, too. 'Cept Mom, but she barely uses the comp, so SBC's browser it is. All she needs to do is check her email anyway.

...isn't there a similar exploit in IE BTW?

And well, the Mozilla foundation are very quick when it comes to releasing of patches. Where Microsoft usually takes months...

You clearly have no idea about the concept of security then. All you have to use is launch IE, and the holes open right up. It won't matter how careful you are, because eventually, you will be hit hard.

Firefox is by no means perfect, it's just that much better than IE.

IE:
  • Doesn't do CSS correctly
  • PNG support != good
  • XHTML != good
  • XML != good
  • Still waiting on IE 7, with all the precious fixes...
  • Integrated into the windows shell (very VERY bad)
  • Free (the only saving grace)

FF:
  • CSS not up to par, but is better than what IE does with it
  • PNG support *gasp*
  • XHTML *gasp*
  • XML *gasp*
  • Fixes hole as soon as they are found.
  • Open source (this helps more han you realize)
  • Massive plugin support for more options (a including very good pop-up blocker)
  • Free

I use it because I actually want to maintain my computer. I wish for this to survive as long as I can... You can keep using IE if you actually think you are invincible. I'll just sit here and laugh at you if when you get hit hard... Nuff said.

well there is the fact that IE can install stuff on its own. but y'know firefox has tabs. and IE has a habbit of popping up 15 windows when you click a link. gee. I think I'll stick with firefox. oh. and did I mention tabs? I love them. I can deal with a security leak for now. I love my tabs. tabs. yeah, did I mention I love tabs.

IE is not free competly, you need a Windows license to use IE. So it's illegal to use IE in Wine, unless you own Windows apparently.

Blah, I wish the English language had a diffrence between as free as in beer and free as in freedom. Swedish have at least... and a few other languages but not English apparently. Even if the word gratis exists, almost none uses it in English.

In my personal experince it's usually 3rd party plugins that cause browsers to crash, kinda funny how a failed quicktime installation did make both Firefox AND IE to fuck up whenever the plugin had to be used... And of course I reinstalled Quicktime.

I'm amazed at how you can turn any Firefox thread in a Microsoft vs Mozilla Foundation thread.

Seriously, is it that fun to do it every time?

You say that like it's a good thing; it isn't. Malicious software can easily get in. The list that Lenophis posted was great, but he forgot one thing; Tabs. Firefox tabs are among the most useful you will ever have. I have all of my websites on my quick links bar at the top, I just right click next to it, open in tabs and bam, all my sites are lined up in tabs waiting. Besides, Firefox is incredibly secure. It isn't an impenetrible wall by any means, it's more of a concrete wall whereas IE is around the level of wood. Sure, a few things IE can do a bit more easily (such as a lot of a websites not supporting Firefox for some ridiculous reason) and the only reason I think you'd use IE is because you constantly use said websites; in which case why don't you use Firefox for everything else? I just don't get it.

Nah, it's more fun to turn it into a Microsoft vs Open Source thread

In all seriousness, there IS a better track record with Open Source projects patching things quickly, I'm not sure if it's because there's more people available to work on it though, or not?

Of course, it doesn't matter if one gets a patch out quicker than the other if people forget to apply the patch, of course. And there's still a LOT of people out there who don't patch, or don't even know what a "patch" is... I know of a few -- at work I provide tech support for a few tens of thousands of people who don't know their arse from their start menu...

I don't have cookies in ebay and such, so even if someone got my cookies, it wouldn't bother. I may be banned in some forums if an account got found (but (!) cookies =! bookmarks - and who might want to search tons of them for forums ?).
But then there is email and messengers, so you might contact the admins to unblock you, with chaning the password of course
But the security leaks and malfunctionting things get fixed anyway soon. That's what I love about Firefox' developers
