4, just four. If you wanted -4 you'd have taken the negative square root of 16.

I've heard it said that sqrt(16) is asking for the positive root, not the negative one. That's why in equations when solving for an x from an x^2 term, the solution will be

I guess the calculator thinks it more practical to give the positive root alone..

There are some situations where one of the answers might not make sense. Particularly in word problems. what if the solution is supposed to be the length of a piece of wood, or the age of a tree? Then -4 doesn't sound very reasonable, does it? In those cases you regard the extra solution as "extraneous" and discard it.

Read the section about principal square root and other square root, that should solve everyone's problems.

It says that the principal square root is positive, but the positive and the negative are square roots, so the answer is

As someone who routinely visits mathworld for help on stuff, I'm not surprised that Mathworld's explanation seems confusing. Their site is practically useless when it comes to learning things. But if you want to review, or get exact definitions, it's pretty good. Planetmath is a little more for non math type people, as it explains things in less technical terms usually.

OK, While we're on the subject of homework, is anyone here familiar with the works of the 19th century Romantic poet Blake? His paralleled works Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience confuse the hell out of me. I mean, I get the main ideas, that innocence is represented by childishness, inexperience, happiness, etc, and experience is represented by pain, wisdom, knowledge, and gain through suffering, but my teacher's asking for something a little deeper than what's on the surface.

Anyone got any ideas?

Grey ... try taking a gander at Blake's poem "The Tyger". The message behind it is different than the ones you've mentioned, so it may be what your teacher's looking for.

I'm not doing too good with the command conjugation of verbs in Spanish.

Tener => Tenga?
Comer => Coma?

Any advice?

Songs of Experience are about the loss of innocence and the gradual degredation of humans into a lower state where greed and malevolance reign. It is not a BAD energy, per se, but it is definitely on a lower parallel than the Innocence of childhood.

Edit: Informally, I believe it'd be negative infinity.

You can make commands by just changing the verb to the Ud./
