I see.

Just curious, because I was trying to prove to my friend how cool the game "Deus Ex" was ... by bringing up some Latin terms up that it had in it.

I guess?

I don't know, Latin references are just cool. The AI's in the game were Daedalus, Helios, and Icarus.

More than 100% off topic, but Deus Ex: The Conspiracy rocks.

Yeah. It means something. It was a term that makes sense when you look at the plays of Aristophanes, Aeschlyus, Sophocles, etc. The Greek plays were made to a specific metre that sounds like singing. Near the end of the play, it generally speeds up noticeably, then a god, like Pallas Athena or one of the others descends and makes all things better. Even in Oedipus Rex there are instances of it.

Actually, Deus Ex Machina means "God From The Machine" (Or Machine From the God, one otr the other). It's an elements that was used in greek plays that usually helped the protagonist get out of a situation.

For example, let's say an arrow is flying at your head, and you can't move it because it's firmly strapped down (Unlike the rest of your body). However, right before it gets to you, you notice a lever on the wall. You pull it with a free hand, your head is released, you drop, and the arrow misses.

Or, plot advancement. In HHGttG, when Ford and Arthur are ejected from the Vogon ship, the Heart Of Gold appearing was Deus Ex Machina. Hell, I think the whole Improbability Drive is powered by Deus Ex Machina.

Actually, you're both wrong. I can't tell you what it really means though because I'm sworn to secrecy. In fact, I've said entirely way too much already.

Didn't the literal term of the phrase come from the trapdoor and pulley mechanism used to make the god appear on stage, thus providing a god from a machine, deus ex machina?
