Yet another day that most people ignore...

Apparently, this is a day where people are supposed to celebrate the beauty of spring. Or at least that's what I THOUGHT May Day was. Honestly, I don't really pay attention to this day as that, even though I have grown up with having to hear about it in school every year. Thankfully it is on a weekend this year so I don't have to hear some speaker pointlessly talk about flowers. So what the hell do the rest of you think of when you hear "May Day"? Yes, I think of airplanes crashing, too. What else? Does anyone hear actually celebrate the day, and if so, how?

Strangely enough, tomorrow (May 1st here) we're flying some air hogs at the park (for lack of other things to do)

We crash them a lot too, and that really fits

Wrong, wrong, wrong...

May Day is a big thing in many European countries, such as here in Norway. Of course, we, as most other countries, normally refer to it as Labour Day, and the day is marked by various groupings of socialists, social-democrats, and communists who have parades, demonstrations, and public speeches. I just came home from downtown, and there was a marching band outside the city's cathedral. Along with the marching band was a group of people with large red flags/banners, and a man giving a speech. Though I'm sure you could have a lengthy political discussion on whose policies are best for the working class, labour and the labour movement is generally associated with leftist ideals here, and thus labour day has become a sort of a socialist day.
It's a public holiday, as well, so everything's closed around here.

I guess the reason May Day isn't what it is over on the other side of the Atlantic is because you all already have another Labour Day (which, as far as I understand, generally isn't much else than a day off, no demonstrations or nothing), and because leftist sentiment has never caught on over there.

It's our "Tag der Arbeit", which is usually a national holiday - but this year it is on a Sunday
Sadly, here in Germany there are some morons which use that day to destroy buildings, cars and do such things - especially in Berlin it is bad
Shop owners in one district put up barriers of wood and even steel to protect their existance, although groups are announced to entertain all the people, not giving people the chance to do too much damage.

On the other hand there are 25

Yea, May Day and Labor Day both mean nothing over here. But then again, remember that we have a government that absolutely bashes workers' unions.

Canada celebrates Labor/Labour Day every year in September.

It's your average public holiday, more or less. No real celebrations or anything of the sort.

Hey, I just found out that there are actually parades/demonstrations in downtown Los Angeles today for laborers. I can't go, but it is nice to know that someone celebrates the holiday correctly

...Morris Dancers!

I'm sure May Day is an English-originated holiday. There'll be lots of Morris Dancers dancing around may poles tomorrow. There will probably be a festival put on in town back home tomorrow. Personally, I'm working

I was at a big convention today for my political party, the New Democrats. Had lots of good fun. We all went out for food, wished each other a happy May Day, and just did political stuff.

I actually didn't know about this holiday at all until I read it here. I've probably at least heard of it before, but I've definitely forgot about it until now. So, I made a joke about it's name in conversation today.

Meh... probably more significance to the fact that it's the first of the month.

(Editor's note: Although I am, in fact, in print journalism, I am not--I repeat, NOT--on welfare. Yet. And this post probably has more to do with me rediscovering Bone Thugs-n-Harmony's one GOOD song.)

Actually, around these parts, since it's a national holiday, a lot of young kids tend to get drunk on April 30, and then sleep it off on May 1. People come in lots of different variations, you have those who don't care and use it as an extra oportunity to get drunk, and then you have those who do care and participate in the parades and demonstrations and such.
