Sorry to post this here but I want to get it out to as many people as possible, I just got hit by some kind of virus or worm. Kirby PopStar got it from NSNick but it didn't effect his AOL account, but he didn't know what it was so I looked at it and got hit and sent the link to alot of people. I don't know too much, but a short google session came up with these two informative links.

http://www.tmcnet.com/usubmit/2005/Apr/1138231.htm
http://dynatech.blogspot.com/2005/04/aim-virus.html

They seem to be about a different virus though, this one linked to a different site, with an MSDos app called "pictures@gallery.com". I'm guessing it's possibly a new strain of the same virus though, the first link talks of how it is easy to change or something. I would of posted this in the hardware/software forum but I want to get it out to everyone quickly.

Hahaha, I would have just caught that a while ago... BUT...

I was using Trillian, and I have Firefox So HA! That's just another reason to use Trillian instead of AIM.

I think Kitten Yiffer and I suddenly look smarter than we actually are

Someone called Dinnersonic had apparenlty that virus too, and well. I have seen thoose "worms" or virusbots or whatever for quite some time. On both AIM and MSN, althought mostly on AIM lately.

One common trick is linking to something who ends with pif, pif looks very much like gif for some people and windows run pif files as they would be executeable.

I actually tried to click on the link, even knowing it was a virus. It didn't work (if it did, I know how to take it away anyway...).

And oh, i'm using Firefox and Trillian. xP

*yawns and laughs at silly AIM users*

Trillian really does rock. And AVG doesn't pick up this virus (Kyouji's infecteness gave it to me, as if it did anything).

Interesting how they disguised the file they link to, it looks fairly normal -- pictures@gallery.com -- but anyone familiar with DOS knows that .com is an executable extension

And yeah, someone tried to send me this too.

Just goes to prove then, that they'll fall for anything these days.

I mean, shit dude, that ILoveYou thingy a while back was just too stupid... and I don't mean ILoveYou itself. Sheesh. A TXT file does NOT have a roll of parchment (or whatever) as an icon.

We'll see? You mean you actually plan on testing to see if it screws up your system? Well, I guess if you know how to kill it, then go for it... but still, it seems kind of silly to go about having to kill it when you can just avoid it all together.

It seems like a virus that works through AIM would have come out a long, long time ago.

It's an incredibly popular program, filled with apt and inept users.

Where does the vulnerability truly lie? It maybe in the AOL's AIM client or it just may be in the protocol itself--if it is a flaw in the protocol, then other clients like Trillian or GAIM may be effected as well. But since a majority of clients are AOL's, we can't really say that Trillian or GAIM are not effected by it...

But... nothing happened to me when I clicked the link Ok, whatever. Go for it. If you find that it DOES affect Trillian, let us all know, because I'm going to go crap my pants and die at that point.

Oh, and as a side note, if I WAS using AIM, I would have this worm on my computer now, because I was gullible enough to click it.

What's this? An AIM virus?

*Sets all security settings to 'Kill. Crush. Destroy.*

Well, I don't have to worry about clicking on links. I already dodge thousands of virused emails by deleting them instead of clicking links.

in the end it's the user that downloads/executes the file. GAIM and trillian sadly won't protect people from doing what they do best: be total idiots.

Yeah, I got this from NSNick. Bah. Total bastard of a thing, though surprisingly easy to get rid of.

And I'm sorry, Trillian users, but Trillian is a piece of crap. Sure, it protects you from things like this that target AIM itself, but I like being able to direct connect and send file/recieve files without having the other guy do something first because he has Trillian and Trillian is a piece of crap

So if you don't use the thing the infection spreads from, you don't have to worry? NO WAY!!!

Thank you for yet another meaningful post.

And it just puts up some stuff which is set to automatically run when the computer starts up. I dunno what said stuff does though on account of I got rid of it before resetting.

Well, that must be a problem only you have, Kyouji. I have Trillian, I use DC often and I'd guess it works around 90% of the time, even with AIM users.
