... I cannot believe there is no thread on this

Anyway, it's pretty good. Surprising what they kept in from the book. Really, if I had to say there was a problem, I would say it's disjointed. Disjointed as the hitbox of Marth's attacks in SSBM. Kinda jumps around a bit too much, and some things are unfortunately still unresolved at the end of the movie... But overall, I'd say it was pretty good.

I just got back from seeing it tonight, and it was much better than I expected. I went with a friend of mine (who is a HARDCORE fan of the books), and he was a bit dissapointed. Most likely because he anticipated the movie more than any other of my friends, and his expectations were astronomical, which is understandable.

Though I have to say, the "Thanks for All the Fish" song is now stuck in my head.

Yeah, but it was surprising what from the books they actually kept (I wasn't expecting the bit with the "No, it's nothing, we're going to die" in particular) so I can't imagine him being too disappointed. Really, though... It just seemed like it ended too early (Which is surprising since it was ~2 hours long).

Yeah, my friend noticed that too, and he brought up something interesting: He said that when he was writing Adams was writing the first book, he was so behind in writing it, that the publishing company told him to send them what he had when the due date arrived. Thus explaining the somewhat abrupt ending of the book and movie.

I'm pretty sure that's not true, judging by the fact that I didn't read that anywhere in Salmon of Doubt (and you'd really think something like that would have been in there - I mean, they quote him as saying "I love deadlines. I love the wooshing sound they make as they go by" and everything).

It's gotten mixed reviews but I'll probably end up seeing it sometime (either on a cheap movie day or on video) since it looks interesting.

Thankfully, the local Montreal reviews were very kind to it.

We need to wait for the Jesper verdict. :\

I'll see it for sure. I loved the book, so I feel obligated to see this... tell me, is the movie anywhere near as FUNNY as the book? Cause from all the ads and reviews I've seen, the humor doesn't seem to be concentrated on as much as, like, the rest of it (making basically just a sci-fi, and not a comedy/sci-fi?)... can someone tell me about that?

Saw it today and it's DEFINATELY as funny as he book. It's very faithful actually, most of the dialogue is word for word what is in the book (and the TV series).

Jakuroth - For a diehard fan, your friend seems pretty misinformed. Hg2g started life as a Radio serial, the book came afterwards.

NE ways, thje only part I was a bit disappointed about was the whole "point of view gun" thingy, it seemed amusing but pointless (in fact you could say thois about John Malkovic's character in general).

I'm wondering if any other Hf2G fans spotted the various references to the TV series, as well as the great man himself?

Saw the BBC version of Marv in there...which rules. Also think I saw Slartibartfast.

I've only seen the TV series though...and from that, I can say that for the movie, I wish there had been more of the book's narration. Good movie overall. Like someone I know said, the pacing is a bit off...and they didn't explain the towel, but oh well. It also wasn't quite as radically funny as the BBC series, but funny nonetheless.

Elmo - I don't remember ANYONE claiming that the books came first. He said that event happened when the books were being written BASED off of the radio show. I assumed people here would get that. My friend was also the only one who noticed his face at the end.

Geez, I'm glad he doesn't go to this board, otherwise he would probably have a hissy fit by now...

I'm going to go find the books now. And I'm downloading the radio serials.

How in the HELL did I not read/listen to/see this before?

(Technical geekery: MOTHERFUCKING SHYNOLA did the Hitchhiker's Guide graphics. FUCK YES. And when they refer to Hammer & Tongs in the opening credits, izzat the same production firm that did a few music videos? I think they did Supergrass's "Pumping On Your Stereo" and Lamb's "B-Line".)

Drjayphd- I want a REAL guide with those graphics As for Hammer and Tongs, yes, they;re the same one. They also did the video to Blur's "Coffee and TV" too. So am I to gather you've seen the film now then, or have you just heard of all this? Oh and whilst you're finding the books and radio scripts, don't forget the TV series, it's like the film but on a lower budget and you've got a bit of the second book in there too (You get to see the actual Restaurant). The guide itself looks a bit different but hey, it's the 80's

Darth Jakuroth - Hmm.... if anything though the books were EXPANDED from the radio series, not cut down.

Just got back from this movie, very nice indeed.

I'm interested in checking out the books now. (I haven't read any of them, but I really enjoyed this movie)

It wasn't the best or funniest movie in the world, but it was definently worth the money.

I just saw it a few hours ago. It was great!
I didn't expect the house to be in the middle of nowhere but everything else seemed to resemble all in the book very well. Marvin reminds me of some people on this board. His pessimistic attitude as opposed to the computer's was histerical!

Yeah, I saw it. And I saw that it was the same Hammer and Tongs on the UK official site, too. Why do you get all the good official sites (HHGttG, JK Rowling)?

I saw the first half hour. At the theater, they had technical difficulties, so everyone got their money back and a free pass for next time. Oh well. It's free now, but I just have to wait. The first half hour was AWESOME and I can hardly wait to see the rest.

It was pretty good. Nothing compared to the books, however, though it'd be cool if they did come out with a sequel (some of the funniest stuff is in the later books).

If you remind yourself that it's based on a screenplay that Douglas Adams wrote and not solely on the books, this movie was awesome . I loved that Douglas Adams planet in the background on Magrathea . Also, it was great to see the original Marvin (from the BBC series) in the waiting room on Vogsphere . Amazing graphics, some of the smoothest and most seemless I've seen. I was kinda tearing up at the very end when they flashed Adams' face at the end, too .
