Not sure what the best place for this but here it is The other day, my friend asked me, "Why do you stay away from religion?" I was surprised from this question because this is the first time my religion participation was framed this way. Typically, when people ask me about my religion participation, they usually ask, "Why aren't you religious?" or "Why are you atheist?" I answer those questions in some fashion that gives an impression that I just am not interested or indifferent. But this question, "Why do you stay away from religion?" makes me feel that someone thinks that I've turned my back on religion. That's impossible since I was never religious to begin with... But anyways, that is my question, "Why do you stay away from religion?" if you do not follow one. For those who follow one, I guess the appropriate question is, "Why is religion necessary to your life?" |

I don't practice a religion because I don't need explinations for concepts that I don't understand. I simply accept that there are things that I don't have explinations for and move on. Sometimes no explination is better then a highly implausable one that violates everything we've learned about our existence. |

My religion tells me that God is all forgiving and that people who have been tread upon in this world will be forgiven and understood in the next. My religion tells me to understand and accept all others, regardless of what they are. My religion gives me hope that mankind can come together so that everyone will be equal under the glory of God, and that those that attempt to use His word to bring destruction and hate to the world will be punished.

I tend not to practice one because I would think that if there was a correct way to worship any higher being, then that higher being would make sure it happened instead of letting tons of people do their own thing. Christianity and Judaism were only around less than 2% of the world when they started, and the same went for just about all other religions. Nay, the same went for all of them, not "just about all". If I turn out to be wrong and I go to "hell", so what? Maybe I'd like hell better, because that would mean Ghandi would be there too He'd have his own fan club down there (or up there, or over there, whatever)! Yea, I can't live in America and not hear craploads of things about Christianity (I mean, Jesus IS on a shitload of merchandise), but I tend not to believe any of it just because I can honestly tell myself that none of us know a damned thing about how existence started and what might be beyond our comprehension. We'll never know what happens to us when we die, even though we all might like to think we do. However, I don't rule out of the possiblity of a higher being, so I am agnostic and not atheist. It was so funny... a few times when I say I'm agnostic, people will ask "So you don't believe in God?"... but one time, some issue of religion came up in a class, and the girl sitting next to me asked me (after I stated that I was agnostic) "So you worship Satan?" xD |

Religion was forced on me the first eighteen years of my life, and I don't believe much of it at ALL. I mean, I believe that communities work much better when there're moral standards, but I HATE the fact that people try to focus on what happens when people die, and how the earth was created. For one thing, you're never, ever, going to know until you die. And there's no basis for judgement. I also don't believe in "God", or what people have made "God" up to be. I believe that there is something out there more powerful than any of us, I just don't believe he intervines on earth at all, or has since he created us. I do believe that if there is a heaven, this "almighty all-loving God" that everyone talks about won't send people to hell, if there is one. Whoever believes that someone who wants to go to heaven after he dies goes to hell, is full of utter bullshit. Edit: geeo, I believe the topic was "why do you stay away from religion?" It was a nice excuse to bitch about the world though. (edited by windwaker on 04-29-05 05:01 PM) |

I lack belief in any sort of divine being, so there's really no point in my finding a religion.

because abstract religious constructs and the pain and suffering caused in the name of said dogmatic constructs are ridiculous and miss the message of love and unity that they allege to be spreading. because it's arrogant an arrogant and misguided assumption to presume that you can pick the one religion that is correct above all others. because it just doesn't make sense. |

There's always going to be some overly provindencial zealous hypocrite mandating his/her own idiocy by saying that their religeon is right, everyone else goes to hell. Just because someone either doesn't know what religeon they are rooting for or even really care, doesn't give a rat's ass to the so-called devout and pious christian for them to determine where everyone belongs. For instance, they tell people NOT to be blasphemous or hypocritical, yet, there's a kink in that rule when they pretend to be god in order to convert one who only wishes to continue his/her everyday life. Leave them alone!!! Religeon is not a contest for superiority, it's a discipline that allows for individual belief. Everyone may have the same religeon but different interpretations of it. Picked this up recently and found it hilarious: |

I begin to find myself less faithful because of what religion is becoming. Every day it seems chritianity is becoming more an more of a commercial gold mine for rich whores. The bible is also overrated. It wasn't written by god, by jesus or some all knowing being from the heavens... it was written by some guys. Yes, some guys who wanted to write about their religion. It has been used to hinder gay rights, women's rights, and stem cell reasearch which could save many people from once un-curable dissabilities. And whenever they want to keep you in line they say "you will go to hell" uugggugh... (edited by Dude Man on 08-15-05 05:00 PM) |

Originally posted by Dude Man (Remember, I'm saying this as an agnostic) It should be noted that there are Christians who are openly gay, that support women's rights, and support stem cell research. One of my mom's best friends goes to a church where the minister is gay. Christianity holds a wide spectrum of people, not just loud, obnoxious, ultraconservative one. These just happen to be the ones you hear from the most because they show up on TV the most. (in America at least) Oh, and remember, there are craploads of other religions besides Chrisitianity as well. Lots of religions have a wide range of beliefs within them. Even though Judaism is basically called a liberal religion in America, there are plenty of conservative Jews as well. Liberal Jews are on TV the most though... most generalizations about a lot of things can be pointed back at the media. |

Generally speaking, there are a lot of other christians that disagree with gay rights, etc. as Dudeman pointed out. Yes, there are thousands of different religeons in the world because everyone has their own idea of disciplining themselves. It's all part of culture and some fail to realise that.

Originally posted by Dude Man Whoa, is this coming from DudeMan? ;O That's exactly how I feel about religion. The Bible was NOT written by god, therefore can be flawed. I must say, a lot of christians believe everything in the bible word for word, which is just insane. And I agree on that "you will go to hell thing". I mean, what kind of caring god is going to send people to hell for eating meat, or not being christian? |
