OK now I feel like Ive discouraged you from trying this hack, but please just give it a go...

This is called Shadow Mario World. You play as none other than the evil Shadow Mario! The story is that Bowser created Shadow Mario and Luigi to take over the Mushroom World. The takeover was successful, he held many Yoshis prisoner and captured the real ruler. But, blinded with power, Bowser started mistreating Shadow Mario & Luigi. So they decided to get revenge by killing him and his children, and rescuing his prisoners. So the ex-evil (well, hes still evil in heart, hes just doing this out of spite) Shadow Mario is off on an adventure!

Im hosting this with Geosh*tties, I know I know, but its the only server I know of that I can rely on for this task.

Dragon Peninsula 2.

Ghost Fortress. The largest level in ShMW. A contender for the longest level in the history of SMW hacking.

None other than the title screen.

Please enjoy, please?? Did I mention its only beta? I still have a LOT of work to do. And the rom needs to be expanded to 1MB b4 patching.

Download Thanks.

Why? Just create the patch with an unmodified 512kb rom as the original file. Anything else is just wrong. (DW:TLC is an exception, though, due to legal thingies and IPS file size.)

If you don't have a 512kb smw rom, I would post one, but this place doesn't allow rom links, so do you want me to email or Private Message it to you?

smwedit: I think you missed the point completely.

Smallhacker: Because DW:TLC did it, anyone else who does it will look 1337

mvent2: that palette SUCKS. Just from the sheer crap of the palettes makes me want to nto play this, and the fact it doesn't look that amazing and there's no wow factor ... blah.

That's supposed to be Shadow Mario? He looks more like Smurf Mario. I'd just recommend changing Mario back to his original colors and trying something else, because palettes don't seem to be your strength. Well, at least Mario palettes. Plus, the levels seem to be based on the skeletons of the original levels, the best way to solve this is just to hit Ctrl+Shift+Delete and start making completely new levels, with different backgrounds (not necessarily new BG's, just BG's that were used at different points in the game).

I agree with the above poster... that Mario doesn't look like Shadow Mario. It looks more like... Smurf Mario. May as well call this hack Super Smurf World or something.

You may as well just make Mario's palattes dark gray than dark blue. Sure, it'd be hard to navigate through dark areas, but think of it as adding challange.

I'm innocent! I'm innocent! I was just helping a newbie.

But, really, it would be pretty cool. XD

See, the thing is, if you add challenge through a means other than level design, what it's actuall adding is frustration.

The people on this board seems to forget that:

GFX < Level design

Try the hack and THEN, do your criticism. Furthermore, he's a newbie. What do you espect? A hack that will put to shame Mario's Odissey and DemoWorld?

I'll try the hack and THEN, I'll make a CONSTRUCTIVE review.

Do not only include the negative parts of the hack in your review! Don't forget to say what's good!

Dude, I can SEE the level design from those screenshots. I don't NEED to try the back to tell me sticking a bush through a wall of cement blocks with a sumo brother inside is a bad idea. Seriously, you're supposed to show off the interesting parts of your hack, not the... Well... This. Anyway, the graphics, outside of making the cement blocks look dumber by taking out the rounded edges, are unchanged. However, every single palette change he made is for the worse. This does not make me want to play it, Zerodius. Plus, things that make you "trapped here forever" (which no doubt refers to something making you wait for the timer to count down until you die) makes me want to play it even less.

These are just suggestions:

make the mario a little bit different,
the hack isn't nearly as good if just modify the original SMW levels,
use some ExGFX (you can either take it from smw 1.5 which you can get at http://www.freewebs.com/mycurrentsmwhack, get it from the ExGFX workshop, or get it from one of peter_ac's hacks at http://www.freewebs.com/peter_ac)

I see serious problems here...

While I do hate Kyouji Craw with a venomous intensity... he's still the ONLY one (along with Golden Yoshi) who said something other than:

"Your GFX is bad!"

You know, GFX does not make a hack!

My problem here is that apart from Kyouji's and Golden Yoshi's complaints about the level design, all that people did was rant about the palettes or lack of ExGFX.

Level design first and THEN, you put ExGFX in. If you do the opposite... well, you make your hacks in a weird way! GFX should be a mean of ENHANCING your hack.

Would you play a hack with no ExGFX and good level design? I would.

As such... I'll stop my rant and make my review.

1. Like I said, according to these screenshots, he didn't really change the graphics themselves (with the exception of the cement blocks), only the palettes. Heh. So anyone who says the graphics are bad are technically wrong.

Well... I played the hack and here are my comments.

=GFX
well, at least, there's no glitches or anything. The main problem is that there's nothing new and that Mario's palettes aren't that good. I saw worse before... but you can do definitely better than this.

Also... while ExGFX is not necessary, maybe you could change a palette or two and give a theme to the levels? Just the fact of having seasons or snow levels can make your hack at least a bit different and more interesting, you know.

=LEVEL DESIGN
Basically, this hack can be considered a "Hard mode" of the original SMW. In short, if you do not espect completely different levels, you could be surprised in a good way. The alterations make the game significantly harder while keeping it playable.

This is not bad at all... but people here have low tolerance toward Easy-type and Hard-type hacks... and as such, it would be best to try and make entirely new levels... not to say that a Hard-type/Easy-type hack can't be fun.

=STORY
Your base story is quite good... but it's not explained well enough during the main game. Unstead of just editing the text, add new text boxes. Else, people will say:

"Yoshi wants to rebel against Bowser? Why? Bowser does not rule over Dinosaur Land!"

In short, your story is somewhat good... but isn't told very well.

=TOTAL
Not too bad for a newbie hack. The flamming toward it is totally injustified. This is a Hard-type hack with a new story, live with it!

Sure, it's not the best hack ever... but for a first hack, I seen much worse.

Maybe you should try your hand at ExGFX or original levels now?... or better yet, test your patience and give us a full Hard-type hack telling the story of how Shadow Mario was created, how Bowser conquered the world, and how Shadow Mario will beat up Bowser at the end!

So it IS a hard-mode hack. How can you really support that? I mean, there are plenty of those out already, and each and every one is significantly worse than the original SMW, and even then they had the advantages of their creators not knowing how to work the palette editor and thus not screwing everything to hell. "It doesn't totally suck" is a craptastic excuse for saying something is good on account of there's so many things out there that are far superior.

The fact that you were surprised that it was a Hard-type hack means that you did not play it.

Play it and THEN, review it.

In short, do not speak of what you do not know of!... did what I said made any sense at all?... whatever!

I'm just saying:

If you want newbies to get better... give them constructive criticism and tell them what to replace/add/remove. Do NOT flame them. Not everyone starts up as a master hacker, you know!

I didn't play it because it looks like a cookie cutter hack with bad pallettes and no thought put into the levels. Duh.

Secondly. Don't say I shouldn't speak of what I don't know of, but... I've had more than enough experience in this area to know what I'm looking at ahead of time. That's why people ask for screenshots - they don't want to download some random crappy hack, but when someone does post screenshots, and they're horrible, and people don't want to play their hack because of it, the screenshots suddenly don't matter? You're not making sense here.

And anyway, I do give constructive criticism. What do you call pointing out what people did wrong and frequently saying what they could do better? Plus. I don't flame people. Flaming people is insulting them, frequently in specific ways, but... I haven't insulted anyone. That's not one of things I do. Point out one flame of mine within the last two weeks. If that's all I do, as you imply, it should be very easy.

Everything looks good except for the fact that the levels are unbeatable. Kyouuoiuouiuouiuoji, calm down. Please. I'm sure everything will look immensely different in the final.

I'm working on my first hack too
