| Well, I just finished watching the first four episodes of this series. I gotta say, I like it. It's by GAINAX, the people behind Neon Genesis Evangelion, Kare Kano, FLCL, Mahoromatic, etc, and it's pretty zany. The plot revolves around a shopping arcade in Osaka, the Abenobashi Shopping Arcade. It is getting old and all the stores are closing down. On the four directions of the shopping arcade, there are stores with an animal statue that are said to protect the arcade from evil spirits, but three of the stores with those animals have closed, leaving only one left. And when the statue on the last store breaks, Abenobashi is left wide open to evil spirits, and things are no longer the same.... The plot is full of references to other anime series, video games, movies, etc, and it gets pretty silly after the Pelican Statue breaks, and the two main characters find themselves in different incarnations of the Abenobashi Shopping Arcade (first, a medieval RPG style world.... then outer space.... and then chinatown...!) I'm not sure if it's QUITE as out-and-out WEIRD as say, FLCL, but it's very funny, and very silly. Anybody else seen Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi? |

| Well, considering I'm a bit of a GAINAX junkie, I think I had it on my list of "things to take a look at cause it's GAINAX" anyways, but I'd forgotten about that... I actually saw it at the store and recognised the artwork immediately as GAINAX. And my curiosity then got the better of me, so I bought it |

I've watched it all and I must say that, while there are some crappy episodes, the others are hilarious.  My personal favorite is the school one (episode 8, I think). |
