It's Earth Day! Understand?

Today is Earth Day, the one day of the year that people actually CARE about the environment.

You will find a few more people throwing their trash away instead of leaving it on the ground, as well as an abnormally large number of citizens *gasp* RECYLCING. Then again, in our country, Earth Day is practically ignored, and so probably everything will stay the same. Do any of our members from other countries celebrate Earth Day? I'm interested in knowing.

Maybe instead of celebrating just "Earth Day," we should consider having "Earth Year", so that people might actually be conscious about what they do to their natural environment until the next Earth Day... in which there would be a new Earth Year

Honestly, though, one day of being nice to the environment won't do anything towards fixing the years, even centuries of damage that have been done in the areas of species diversity, global warming, ozone depletion, air and water quality, and... dare I say it, population control.

In order for us to fix any of these things, there needs to be a long term commitment from a large number of people. The government can take some responsibility, for they can make policies that practically force people to live a certain way (well, greatly encourage it, at least). Further research of new fuels so that we can move away from fossil fuels is a big step towards slowing down the problems that we have either created or accelerated, and perhaps even fixing them. Governments and businesses also will have to make sacrifices and move away from oil based products as well, and this part will probably be harder than creating practical replacements themselves.

While it is the government's responsibility to regulate certain things, there are a lot of things that citizens can do by using what we already have. Making sure that homes are energy efficient might cost a few bucks, but for those that can afford to fix them up, the long term money and energy savings are enormous. Just doing simple things like turning off anything that isn't being used is helpful as well.

Pollution from businesses and farms may be hard to control, but people can do simple things by actually throwing away garbage and picking up stuff that they see on the ground. Perhaps people can start recycling today if they don't do so already. Possibly they can start a compost bin as well. Any little action helps, and if enough people start caring, then a lot can be done to at least slow down the troubles that we humans have already started up.

So, if you see a piece of trash on the ground today, please pick it up. Throw it in the appropriate type of disposal bin. Turn off the lights in a room that is not being used. While I would like everyone to do this every day, I realize that the odds of such a thing happening are slim. At the very least, do all the environmentally practical things on the day that is designated for it.

And as my great science teacher has said, "Think globally and act locally."

So,
REDUCE, REUSE, AND RECYCLE

Well, I want to say something about this. Personally, I'm somebody that tries to give a damn about the environment everyday, whether or not it pisses me off. But I have noticed a lot of things that really just ruin the scenary. For one things, loads of cigarette butts. All over campus and in all sorts of places (Most the dirt, sidewalks, and... some out-of-view places. I thought there were ash trays around campus to dispose of the cigarettes, but... it's kind of an insult to one's self and probably the rest of the world for people to believe that the planet's just one big ashtray too.

This is the only world that we have really. As of right now, this isn't another other planet that we have to go on. Trust me, while one piece of garbage may be something little, others will think the same thing and soon, you'll have a pile or line of garbage sitting on the side of the road. Trust me, I can recall that people think lakes are fine for dropping bottles in. Come on, fish and stuff swim in there. Just because we're able to do this to the fish and that the fish can't just pour an aquarium in our homes doesn't mean we SHOULD do this.

I'm not trying to blame people here, and I'm not saying that I'm perfect at keeping myself to that word. I'm not exactly a recycling type of person all the time, nor I'm a huge energy-saver (Computers...), but... I would like to keep this planet alive long enough for my children's grandchildren to see and stand on. What I'm saying is... it's not only the pollution from factories, cars, and other big things that we need to be concerned about, but we also gotta really consider what actions we take.

This year my college passed a law that if you want to smoke, you had to do it in designated areas and/or be 25 feet away from buildings. And there are actually places where you can properly discard cigarettes in those little metal boxes.

...nobody actually did it. They smoked right by buildings, almost everywhere outside, and actually AVOIDED the designated areas. And I see cigarette butts everywhere. Why did they do that? Because the campus security is just so friggin' LAZY. They just go around and check up on cars to give tickets to. That's it. Nothing else. Everything else? It's handled by the community police. Even those that needs their cars jump-started. Because of the campus' laziness, crime is high. I'm surprised I didn't get robbed or anything throuhgout my 4 years of college.

Anyway.

I'm one of those people that recycles reguarly. I toss bottles into the recycle bin. I toss papers into the recycle bin. Anything that could be recycled, I threw it into the recycle bin. I guess you should say that my parents influnced me a lot. When I was growing up, they would always tell me to take bottles and papers down to the recycle box in the garage.

Some people just are too lazy and/or doesn't care. They throw bottles and papers in the trash. But me, I'm picky. I'm not going to put my hand into the smelly, wet, sticky trash just to throw a bottle or paper into the recycle bin. XD

There should be an automated machine that automatically fines you if you discard things into the wrong places. That would teach those smokers, drinkers and litterers.

EDIT: Oh, and once in elementary school, on Earth Day, we were given a small evergreen tree each. I planed mine in the backyard. I'm now 23, and the tree has grown a lot. Ah, nice memories. I'm glad I planted it there. It looks very nice in the backyard.

Sketchie, you sound like a dendropheliac. As for me, I'm going to celebrate earth day as a normal american citizen would: not care. It's just another day with a fancy name. who really thinks up all these damn holidays anyways?

What the heck is a dandropheliac? I've looked it up on www.dictionary.com and came up with nothing but neutrophilic and dendrology.

What...What's this!?

DO I SENSE APATHY AND STUPIDITY!?

I DO SENSE APATHY AND STUPIDITY!

Wow, I can feel the generic comments and lack of intelligence coursing through my veins like bad jokes in an Adam Sandler movie.

jescis, good for you. Two days ago, it was Hitler's Birthday. If you were an important member, you would've gotten a thread. Even if it was on Our True Administrator's birthday.

This is actually a very important thing. Given that in Canada it is sponsored by the CAW (one of those DEMONIC UNIONS! ONOES NO TEH WORKERZ!!!!) and they pour money into it, it is a fairly important thing. Earthday stands for protecting worker's and ensuring that the work place is safe and healthy. Not just for the workers, but for the surrounding community to. Earthday is also representative of the growing need to actually protect the disappearing environs surrounding the Earth. Apathy leads to degradation and decay. And I hate people that are apathetic to good causes. Given that there proof that cannot be disputed that the world is heading downhill due to population and the gross mismanagement of resources by Western nations, we should all observe these things more carefully. If it takes a "fancy named" day (how the fucking hell is Earth + day fancy? Jesus Christ!) then it takes a day. The Earth cannot take care of itself when we are so strongly shifting the balance of what is healthy for it, and what is destroying it.

I believe moderation between complete environmentalism and complete anti-environmentalism is the best way to approach the matter. For example, while it is good to recycle, it won't kill you if someone throws out a can or two. Of course, then there's those weird suggestions in Microsoft BOB... really, it's up to the people to decide.

I always wondered how the world would be if we had the same restrective policy in Sweden about enviroment everywhere.

Althought I wonder which country that is the most strict when it comes to pollution.

...I wish I knew about this day earlier.

And eh, I recycle. I throw garbage where it should be. And I tend to take "ecological products" when possible, unless the quality is very bad or price is too high or something.

I was inside most of the day so I guess that's my contribution to the environment right there. :\

To be honest, I didn't know it was Earth Day until I read this thread, and that was with 37 minutes to go in the day more or less. Wasn't exactly on the front page of the paper or anything, and our university wouldn't do anything for it since it's deep into exam time, so... Our loss, I guess.

I think the dismal number of respondents in this thread is reflective of the number of people in the world (yes, not just the board) that actually give a shit about Earth Day

Oh well, it was worth TRYING to get some people to open their eyes up a little. Maybe next year... or maybe I can just bug you about it for the next 360+ days

I'll be honest, I never have a clue when Earth Day is. No matter what day it is, be it Christmas or the middle of a random school week, I never litter and I am disgusted by the excessive wastefulness I see around me... so I guess you're right Kefka, I don't care about Earth Day. I do what I can to take care of the environment everyday, so one special day doesn't really matter to me.

And the title could lead someone who doesn't know what day Earth Day is to think this was about garbage or recycling in general. That might explain the lack of activity here...

Sydney has an alright system in place. Instead of the normal one garbage bin, we have three. The normal, smaller rubbish bin gets picked up weekly, and then there's a full size recycling bin split in two halves. One side for paper and cardboard, the other for cans, glass and recyclable plastics. This one gets picked up every two weeks, and on it's off-week, the full size grass bin gets picked up.

If inspectors who go through your bin find items not properly discarded, they'll put a big, red, hard to remove sticker on your bin, telling the garbage truck drivers to skip that bin. You don't get your rubbish picked up for another week.

You can get an $80 fine if caught throwing rubbish on the ground, and since the recent drought, businesses have had to use 50% less water by recycling water.
Sydney's dams are at their lowest ever. I'm not exactly sure what percentage they're on now, but it's somewhere in the region of 41% I think.

We also have a once a year Clean Up Australia Day, where everyone goes to beaches, and everywhere, and cleans up everything. Making a Clean Up Week, would disscourage people. What would be more appropriate, is spreading the seven days through-out the year.

I seen this on google. I think that everyday people should try to take care of the earth and if not... someone will clean it up so I could honestly care less. I never got caught littering. Though since I have "grown" up I tend to stay away from littering.
