MS sure loves to make these things a pain don't they?  I made some partitions on my 232GB HD, including a 5GB NTFS one and 3 others. The plan is to install XP and Gentoo on it. I decided to go with XP first because its installer apparently likes to wreck Linux partitions ( )... No go, of course. Despite that this install (on another disk) can see them all just fine, the installer only sees a single 127GB partition (not to mention thinking that's the entire disk's size) and can't tell what it is. (The only thing close to that is a 217GB NTFS partition...) Deleting the NTFS partition in hopes that the installer would see it as empty and make a new one doesn't help, and I can't just get rid of them all, let it make its own, and resize them, because resizing an NTFS partition using all one methods I know (sfdisk) kills the filesystem.  So how do I do this? |

| ...last time I installed Windows 2000 I could set what partitions I wanted on the HD. It should be possible to set a partition on 10 gb and one on the rest. I did that alot of times. And as I know it, the Windows 2000 installer is the same as Windows XP. When it comes to the first part at least. Hell, the installer do have a own partitioner thing. Did you somehow miss that?  ...and Windows install don't destroy the Linux partitions, where the hell did you get that from? It does however mess up the MBR, but that's fixable.... still you should install Windows before Linux becuse of the MBR. (edited by Kitty Jedi on 04-21-05 12:59 PM) |

| Wierd, I changed a NTFS partition with QTPartEd and it worked perfectly fine, so... yeah. Anyway, no help aside from that. Never had such a problem (or a massive HD, for that matter) |

| Well if I could get into QTPartEd, sure... Don't you need to be in an actual desktop environment for that? I'm just running stuff off the livecd command line. XP does have its own partition manager but it isn't recognizing the drive's proper size or any of the partitions, so that's no good... |

| First thing: How the hell do some of you people mess up on simple spelling? It's QtParted, not QTPartEd. I really don't understand what you're trying to get at towards the end, but here: 1. WinXP doesn't mess up non-FAT/NTFS partitions (notice how I mentioned FAT and NTFS  ). It does, however, overwrite the MBR no matter what. Windows 2000 and lower (remember kids, Win2k is NT, so don't go thinking 95/98) do not mess with the MBR if they do not recognise the current one  2. It might be a BIOS problem. . . 3. SystemRescueCd contains QtParted. Of course, it also contains the utilities of which QtParted is a front-end for (parted, ntfsresize, xfstools, etc). |

| Hm, well I did manage to trash them all (empty anyway ) and create a 5GB partition from the installer, finally... That went fine but now Windows absolutely refuses to see the proper disk size. This was a problem at first but installing the update Q331958 fixed it before, but this time I've installed it at least 10 times and rebooted countless times and it won't do anything. The disk manager still shows 128GB no matter what. Changing BIOS settings doesn't help either (and I didn't have to last time). [edit] Oh sure, fill it with partitions in Linux and NOW it recognizes it. I'll leave this open though because I'll probably need help woth something else in a few minutes anyway. Actually, come to think of it... -Is it at all possible to change the drive letter of the drive Windows is installed on? This lettering scheme sucks. -Can I force Windows to send deleted files to a certain drive's recycler? Force windows send delete files to a certain drive's recycler you can't do it unless you rewrite Windows. Every drive has their own recycle bin folder. So, unless you write a utility that will move the file you want to delete from Windows to the disk you want it on, you have to deal with it. And how big did you make your Windows partition? If it is greater than 2GB you shouldn't have space issues... |

| You can assign partitions letters, I was able to do that after I created the partition or during the creation of partition. I don't know if you can do it with a existing HD. People don't know this, but like Linux you can mount partitions in folders. So you can have "c:\my harddrives\second hd\" if you wish, althought I don't reccomend it. |
