One of the lesser known sports of the olympics. Alot of people that can't make the cut for some sports (soccer, basketball) sometimes try out for European Handball and make it. The game involves running three steps, and each step you have to dribble the ball. If you hold the ball for more than 3 seconds after you've been stationary, the ball switches over to the other team. Your objective is to get the ball into the oppositions goal.
I'm playing it in gym right now and its pretty fun. What are your thoughts on this game?

This is for the olympics? That's interesting.

I've played it in 5th and 6th grade and it was lots of fun, maybe I should try out somewhere

Isn't handball the same in any country?

We played handball in gym during one term but I forget all about it. Suffice it to say that there were rules but they were somewhat relaxed.

Yeah I played handball for a season in high school (I've played pretty much everything except ice hockey, gridiron and caber toss. And curling)

It's a good game, pretty fast and fun, but International Rules Football is along the same lines but way, way better.

I made a thread for Team Handball (which is the normal name used for it) some years ago, during the Women's World Cup (not the last one, but the one before that). Team Handball is actually the second largest sport in Europe, after Football. In the older days, it existed in two versions. An outdoors one, on grass, with 11 players, and an indoors with 7 players. Today, even though some few still play outdoors, the indoors one is the big one.

The indoors version of the game originated in Scandinavia, and the Scandinavian nations are among the best in the World. On the men's side, Sweden is one of the best, and on the women's side, Norway and Denmark have been the top 2 over the last decade or so (even though both Norway and Denmark did poorly in the last World Cup. Norway didn't even manage to qualify for the Olympics, and Denmark wouldn't have either, had they not already been qualified thru winning the European Championships).

I enjoy watching Handball, and especially Women's Handball, since our national team is so good. I probably won't be paying too much attention come Athens 2004, however, since Norway won't be in it.

Wow, that's really cool.

I would be interesting to watch a game that you thought was made up to appease 10 year olds.

SomerZ: Norway didn't qualify in the men's pool?

I doubt Canada even TRIED to qualify. XD We'll stick to water polo as our eclectic sport.

I doubt the men qualified, Col. It's always been the women's team that's been collecting the trophies. Actually, the women's team is so good, Handball is considered a women's sport in Norway. It's a popular sport here, as well, it gets the second most media coverage of all the summer sports, after footy.

No, no, no. You've misunderstood me completely.

Of course men can play handball if they want. Men and women can play whatever sport they want (we've actually come very far in terms of equality between sexes in this country). The thing is, though, that handball is considered a women's sport. The women get the most media attention, and the women get the most people watching their games. It's exactly the same in America, y'know. Take basketball, for instance, it is considered a men's sport, the men gets the most media attention and the biggest crowds, but there is also a women's league for basketball. All sports are generally associated with one sex, but that doesn't mean the other sex can't play.
