Yes its fine if you give people credit. But ALWAYS ask them before ripping from their game.

Just so some of you know....there are certain people like myslef who slightly edit rips (moving a few pixels maby), so they can tell if someone ripped from your game and didn't give you credit....

Oh and NEVER rip original graphics out of a game unless for some strange reason the creator says its okay.

I would say, that if you rip gfx from a hack, that was ripped from another rom, you dont have to ask the person who hacked it(but you probably should), but atleast give them credit, if you rip original gfx, then DEFINENTLY ask before you do....and still give credit if you are allowed to rip them.

I say you have to explicitly ask them, they did the work to rip the graphics so you should respect that.

That's exactly my point Idiot. And that's the main difference between ripping from Nintendo, and stealing rips from a fellow hacker.

Oh yes because everyone knows stealing graphics is so much harder than doing your own graphics, so you can't steal someone stolen graphics because they worked so hard at it and it'd be immoral

This community's logic makes no sense.

That is without the most hypocritical and stupid thing I have ever read. This community is based on messing around with other people's work. (You think that SMW ROM you edit just appeared as if by magic?) The vast majority of hacks utilise graphics taken from other games. By your logic, your entire hack is immoral. (Ripped graphics, ripped levels)

For original graphics, I can sort of see where people are coming from, but really, you'd have to be a complete retard to use someone else's original graphics, and not expect anyone to notice.

I think RLM is a good thing personally. Virtually all other games that are hacked have no protection for them, and you don't see others ripping off hacks willy nilly, so your concerns are being blown out of all proportion. (I can think of precisely two occasions in which that has happened, and one of them I'm not entirely sure of the details)

just think of it this way, if you think stealing other peoples gfx is immoral and wrong, and you dont care about ripping from the game...then the way I see it, your a hypocrite..because people did even harder work on the gfx that your ripping from the rom, then the gfx your ripping from the hacker....so yeah.
edit: also, I dont mean original gfx...thats just wrong...atleast without permission

I don't mind if people rip GFX from my hack, I really don't, although my hacks are unlocked anyway.

Heh, I thought you were calling DisruptiveIdiot an idiot at first... XD

I think that you should give credit if you use someone else's graphics. It's not immoral, however I voted that by accident... Clicked the wrong option

I hate to agree with you (Actually, I'm lying. I almost always agree with you. But I have to say that, it's the law.), but right on. I don't hear anyone complaining when people steal graphics from commercial games. Sure, two wrongs don't make a right, but if you're complaining about one, then you're obliged to complain about the other. I'm willing to look past the blatant plagiarism of graphics ripping because, quite honestly, it's not a big deal. Ripping ripped graphics is exactly the same, except it's even LESS of an issue. The only problem is that this is a fairly small community, so people are more likely to get riled about it. The fact is that by stealing, you're condoning theft. So quit bitching about it.

Still, it'd be a nice to give credit to the original rippers. Yes, that goes against everything I just said, but this is a small community, so it's only polite. Also, I don't think I could rip other hackers graphics, but if you're willing to face the consequences, go ahead.

i hope you didn't mean that personally dan, but anyway i respect your opinion. But i meant that i think using RLM to rip is immoral. Mainly because people lock their hacks because they don't want other people using their GFX.

it doesnt make a difference for a couple of reasons:

1) ripping graphics means stealing graphics from game designers.
the stealing part doesnt matter to me,
but the point is that ripping graphics shows a lack of skill to create original art.

2) ripping graphics from commercial games is a trivial task and involves minimal work for the ripper.
imho, he shouldnt be credited at all.
some people are actually proud of their so-called ripping abilities.
personally, i'd feel ashamed to do so.

3) its unimportant how cool the background is one can rip, its all about
how its incorporated into the hack.
for example, even the nicest dkc3 background will look absolutely stupid and out of place together with standard smw background tiles.
continuity across levels and atmosphere are the keywords here.

it doesnt matter who ripped a background in the first place.
the question is:
who implements it best?

d4s hit the nail on the head. I don't care if you steal my graphics, even though I've made it all myself. If you can do a better job than me, hell yeah that rocks. If you can't, what harm does it do me? I'm still top dog.

It's okay, as long as you have the decency to give credit to the original hackers in the end credits, a readme, or preferably both. That's what I'd do, anyway... Besides, stealing a million rips from a million other hacks doesn't automatically mean "OMG my hak is teh r0XX0rs"; and it's even worse if they flat-out steal them without giving credit, which shows that they have no honor. Level design, gameplay, and creativity are what makes a hack unique in its own way. In fact, this is kinda the point as to WHY do people hack. They want to create a unique gaming experience, something to be remembered by. And yes, while some people do fail miserably, I think that they deserve a second chance. After all, you've got to start somewhere, don't you?

"Stealing" and "ripping" are practically the same. It's all a matter of principle.

It think it's okay, if you give credit, that is.

Asking for permission? Nah. I mean, as long as you give credit, don't make profits (because in that case, you have to get permission), I think it's okay.

Honestly, I don't see what's so tabboo about stealing stuff from other hacks. I mean people steal stuff from other games all the time -- stealing from hacks is somehow different?

Only sense I can make is that the general feel is:

If it costs money -- it's okay to rip stuff from it.
If it's available for free -- always ask permission.

I'm not sure if I personally agree with that logic, but that seems to be the general attitude of people in this community.
