I've heard news/rumors that the ESRB plans to make the M-rated games, go up by one year. Instead of being 17+ to buy an M game, you're going to have to be 18+ to buy one.

Honestly, if one year going to make that big of a difference?

And this is going to be put more pressure on us (those who actually sell the games), because we already get beef from kids who want to buy M games, or parents who have to actually walk into the store to see and know what their child is buying.

Some cases its good, especially for those understanding parents, who already know about the game, and who don't mind us telling them about it (its our job, and if a cop, or someone from the esrb walks in and we don't say that, we get fired).

Then we have those who don't care what their kid is buying and get mad when they have to walk a few extra feet into the store to be there when the kid buys the games.

And then you have the clueless folk. Like yesterday....the father comes in, asking for a game called GTA. I ask him which game in the series, and he didn't know. Then I asked him how old his child was, and he told us that it was for his ten year old daughter. He had no clue to what the game intails, and we had to tell him about the esrb raitings. He was happy to learn of this.

And then you have these punk ass kids who will trash a store because they can't buy a M game. Yea, talk about the lack of respect these days, huh?

Anyway, lets end this rant...what do you think about the esrb trying to make the M games on year higher?

Quite honestly, I'm lgad the ESRB rating is going up. Why?

I don't think video games will influence every child to the point of them wanting to emulate what they see. But ESRB ratings aren't a form of explicity censoring. It's just a rating to infrom parents, so legit adults can still get their gorey, sexy, profane fill in their copy of GTA or Doom 3.

If the ESRB jumps the age up by one year, that's fine with me, as long as I still can get what I want uncensored.

... you had to be 17? Wow.. here I always thought it was 18...

Anyways... it doesn't make much of a difference. It's just another one of those "being an adult" privileges. I doubt it's gonna increase the stressload for people who sell games since I'm sure the kids who cause trouble or the kids with the non-caring parents are still gonna be too young for those M games. By the time one of those kids reach 17, I'm sure he or she would either grow up or have a fake id

I also doubt that it'd change the attitudes of those who sell games. If they don't care who they're selling to, they're gonna continue not caring. If they do care, they're just gonna stick with the way they do it. *nod nod*

Personally, I don't care about it.

I've always thought that if parents paid more attention, there'd be no need to have these ratings, but that's a rant for another day.

It makes sense to raise it (or lower it) a year, though. I can't think of anything else that you have to be seventeen for. A few things, like driver's licenses (dammit, how the HELL do you spell that?) require you to be 16 in most states, and a few other things require you to be 18... but not seventeen.

Of course, it doesn't affect me anyway. I've been playing Doom since I was... 12, I think. My mom clearly doesn't care what I play, since I know the difference between reality and videogames.

... and don't ask why I spelled seventeen out while writing 16 and 18 as numbers.

I haven't heard anything about it, but 17, 18... what's the big deal? I think it's fine as-is at 17, because then the Adults Only (AO) rating, which is 18+, goes right out the window. (Why have two ratings meaning the same thing?)

They would probably do away with the AO rating as that wouldnt make any sense.

Rating doesnt matter to me, I am 19 so whoopdeedoo either way. Honestly I dont think there should be an age limit to any rating, just have the rating so caring parents will know. If a 12 year old wants a MA game, they will get it one way or the other.

I simply think it should be manditory that people that cannot present ID to prove that they are 14 and up shouldn't be allowed to purchase video games, without a consenting adult with them. Still easy as all sin to get around, but regardless it makes it alot harder to fool folks. Because really, in the mid 90s this wasn't as big a problem. But we have Manhunt and GTA to contend with now. Games that can be seriously depraved. Kids shouldn't be allowed to play these games.

...they better not. I hate having my brother or mom have to buy the game for me because I am sixteen (like what happened when I got Timesplitters: Future Perfect. Stupid ol' Wal-Mart employee). When I am seventeen, I will be happy that I don't have to rely on anyone to buy games...

...unless they up the rating. That would suck...

Sure, some mature games are really bad, but if you can trust the kids, let them get it. I have been playing mature games since I was less than ten and I don't want to go kill people in the open. It is how the kids take information is why video game violence is being blamed.

I also heard that the ESRB is planning on making a rating for between T and M, saying that T is PG and M is R. They need a PG-13 rating for it to be perfect.
*looks at a T rated game*
Oh look, it says "Ages 13+". Sounds very much like PG-13 to me.

Onos! Won't effect me much either way. Already 18 biatches!
But seriously, it's god-damned ridiculous. There's already enough 8-year old kids and their moms playing Vice City. They'll have better luck selling Mature-rated games in a porn store just to keep the little ones away. But they'd bellyache their pops for them so there's really no point.

You have to keep the AO rating since that's the only way to distinguish between "Mature" games and pornfests. :\

That employee wasn't stupid - he was just doing his job, and he might have been the ONLY guy at Wal-Mart who was doing it. Still, it was the right move *given* what the law says.

On a side note, as far as I know, there has never been a game rated AO.

There is alot of AO games Lord Rahl, most of thoose just are... porn games. :/

We never had a 17+ rating in Europa. Our current Pegi rating have 3+ 7+ 12+ 16+ and 18+, and then markers if the game contains Violence, Sex, Drugs, Bad Language, fear and Discrimination.

There are. They're generally made by companies like Jast & Peach Princess and feature anime-style porn.

That would suck if they did since I just (very recently) turned 17. It would be like this: I obtain my privalege to buy any game I want without an accompanying parent... for merely a couple of months. Then that privalege goes out the window, and I have to wait yet another year to gain it back.

Anyway, an "up" rating would only indicate that somehow ALL M-rated games are sex n' porno games, even nill violent games like Halo/Halo 2. Sorry, sex AND violence, for the most part, just don't mix when it comes to gaming. There might be some over-the-top M games like GTA or Getaway containing both, but usually it's rated such for one or the other (AO if it's a pornographic sex-fest).

My bad, I worded that wrong. I meant any console games rated AO.

Although as I look at my 4 h-games, I see no ESRB rating on them.
