From the quick Google of the word 'doukutsu' in the textbox at the top of the window, leads me to believe this is a Cave Story - Doukutsu Monogatari editor.

That's actually my least favorite bit of the game. The puppies are cute and all, but having to trudge through that area four or five times to bring them all back is just annoying.

The rest of the game is totally awesome, though.

Anyone know how the non-pxm files work? Such as the .tsc files?
The .pxe files look like enemy locations, and the .pxa files are what each tile does what tables.

I thought you would ask that, considering I just cracked the PXM format myself. I was just about to try another file type.

Which brings me to the question; where do you get the graphics from? Do you load them from the upside-down raw graphic files I forgot the extension of or...?

Upside-down?

Try renaming the PBM files to BMP. That's how I extracted all the graphics used in my layout (especially the Sue avatar, since I'm not aware of any way to make it appear in-game).

PBMs are BMPs with some extra ASCII added on to the end. To be safe, remove the extra ASCII before editing.

Also, I could tell you a fair bit about the TSC files, but I'm not going to No offense or anything, but I was trusted with that particular information, and I'm not going to betray anyone else's confidence by divulging it.

It makes perfect sense. The guy who programmed the game trusted me with his TSC code, and I'm not going to betray that confidence by sharing it with other people. If you gave someone information that you didn't want to share, would you be happy if that person decided to plaster it all over the 'net? Probably not.

You didnt say that the first time. I thought someone else figured it out and told you and now you are keeping it a secret. Thats what your post made it seem like anyway.

Edit #9:
TSC is a really dumb way of encrypting files. Take the byte at (filesize & 0xFFFFFFFE)\2, subtract every other byte by that value. Then it's just plain text.

Now I can get 300 max life added every time I talk to someone! Mwahahahaha!

I'm guessing the format was given such weak encryption soley to prevent dirty rotten cheaters from doing so, or maybe to stop people from making crappy swear word hacks.
The format is the same for the japanese .tsc files too, it's just a shift jis text file. ミミガーは敵じゃない!

I can confirm that the human version of Sue (face #27) is not used in the game at all. See, US releases of games aren't the only versions to get stuff DUMMIED out!

New: Doukutsu Monogatari .TSC Encoder/Decoder! http://home.comcast.net/~alanweiss3/dwedit/files/tsc_converter.zip
Now you can make the first life capsule give you 9999 HP and all the guns and items.

And here I thought it was some fucked up table thingy.

Anyway, I got some info on PXE files. It's not much and I don't have the info with atm, but after the PXE header ascii there's an integer with the amount of entities, and each entity is 14 bytes long. More info this weekend, unless somebody beats me to it.

Wait... lemme guess... you just used the graphics engine of your Dragon Warrior editor, right? 'cause I find it rather improbable that Cave Story has a similar way of storing level data. w00tness, anyway. I know very well how much work it is to figure out an undocumented level data format, and if you also manage to decode the object thingy stuff, you'll have accomplished great things.

BMF's new post layout made me download and actually play the game (I found it through Google as well), since I thought, "If he does a capital change (besides different colour for that sex change fad) to his post layout the first time after years, there must be a good reason for that. " I am currently stuck at the "Core" room boss. I got him below 20% a couple of times, but then he killed me with evil spheres of light. At certain places in this game, I seriously miss the ability to make savestates

If you want, I could tell you some stuff about the savestate format, because I ocassionally saved a state after getting booster 0.8 (I just wanted to have a look how it works, but then, I went off to eat, and by the time I returned I already forgot and saved immediately afterwards), so I had to hack my way out of that situation (i.e. finding out how storyline counters, items etc. are stored) to undo that step.

If you want savestates, go download a copy of Resource Hacker, and duplicate the "Debug Save" item on the menu, then run the game in windowed mode. The game always loads from "profile.dat", but you can create as many other .dat files as you want, or maybe even make a simple frontend that hex edits the .exe file to change which savegame to look for.

There isn't much to the .pxm level format... 2 bytes for the map width, 2 bytes for the map height, followed by 1 byte per tile. The tileset changes frequently though.
