You may not of seen this if you live in the US but people in the UK might. This was great comedy that started in 1989, and had 8 series up until 1999. It was the first Sci-fi sitcom made and it was the most viewed program ever on UK TV, on BBC1 & 2 (Americans don't have that I don't think). The next part is a HUGE spoiler to the program but it wouldn't mater anyway.

The main part of the story is that a slobby man called David Lister is put into suspended animation, or stacis because he brings his unquarentined cat on board. While he is in there, the main drive plates of the ship Red Dwarf blow, and subject the crew to a lethal dose of lithium 2. His cat survives the accident because he amazingly was the only thing sealed inside somewhere, the cargo decks. they evolve into a human like creature which is seen in the first episode.

After 3 million years, when the radiation reaches a safe background level, Holly, the ships computer with an IQ of 6000 releases Lister from Stacis, and breaks to him the bad news. After a small talk, Arnold Rimmer, Lister's bunkmate walks in as a hologram, donning a large "H" on his head. They walk around for a bit trying to patch up what wrongs they did to each other in the past and just end up making more, the see the evolved Cat, now a human-like creature. For the rest of the first series they are mainly seen in the ship.

Series 1 episodes:
1) The End (The drive plate accident)
2) Future Echoes (Lightspeed travel makes them see the future)
3) Balance of Power (Lister tries to become a chef to overpower Rimmer)
4) Waiting for God (The cat race make Lister their god, but under the name of Cloister, and Rimmer finds an alien pod but finds out it was just a garbage pod from Red Dwarf)
5) Confidence and Paranoia (Listers catches a virus which causes his dreams to come true)
6) Me Squared (Lister creates two Rimmer holograms... One was bad enough)

For the second series, the crew use the Blue Midget, a small ship which now allowed them to travel outside the confines of the ship. They celebrate Rimmer's deathday on a moon with a breathable atmosphere, they meet a deranged mechanoid that thinks the three dead crew on the ship he was on are still alive, and the crew get trapped in a better than life video game

Series 2 episodes:
1) Kryten (The crew find a crashed ship, the Nova 5, containing three corpses and an android)
2) Better Than Life (The mail pod finally reaches Red Dwarf after Holly manages to turn the ship around, and they find themselves playing the ultimate game of all time)
3) Thanks for the Memory (Lister gives Rimmer 8 months of his memory as a present, but it doesn't go according to plan. Rimmer also finds out an alien language)
4) Stacis Leak (The stacis booth on floor 16 has a leak and the crew find themselves in the past. Rimmer tries to save himself and Lister tries to save Kristene Kochanski, the love of his life)
5) Queeg (Holly breaks article five, by endangering Listers life by electrocuting him accidentally, and a substitute computer takes over)
6) Parallel Universe (Holly creates the Holly Hop Drive, causing the crew to enter a parallel universe. Lister has sex with his parallel female self... but HE'S the one who gets pregnant

This series had the new character Kryten as a main character. Now nearly all of what happens is outside Red Dwarf, but in another new vehicle, the Starbug. The crew enter a time hole, and appear in a backwards universe on earth in 1993, Kryten finds he is going to self destruct, and Lister is attacked by his own underpants

Series 3 episodes:
1) Backwards (When the crew enter a time hole, they find themselves in a backwards universe. Lister gets it all wrong and thinks they have just warped into bulgaria)
2) Marooned (When escaping black holes, Lister and Rimmer's ship crashes into a frozen planet. When Kryten and the cat discover where they are, they find the black holes were just specks of grit on the scanner scope)
3) Polymorph (A shapeshifting lifeform makes it's way onto the ship, and becomes many different things before sucking the emotions fear, vanity, guilt and anger from Lister, Cat, Kryten and Rimmer. It also turns into a pair of boxers which shrink when Lister puts them on
4) Timeslides (While Kryten developes some photographs, the crew find the developing fluid has mutated, and the crew can walk into the photographs when they are produced as slides. This also causes the future to change. This give Lister an idea)
5) Bodyswap (Rimmer and Lister swap bodies so Rimmer can give it good nourishment and exercise... with Rimmer being a hologram to long it game him slightly DIFFERENT thoughts...)
6) The Last Day (Kryten's in-built shutdown disc should activate at 7:00 the next morning. They then find that if Kryten didn't deactivate himself, his replacement will do it for him)

I'll finish this later on, it's too late now. There are another 5 series to go

I'm a die-hard dwarfer, although we are a bit rare on this mb, there are only a few of us.

Mr Flibble would be very cross indeed.

It was on PBS sometimes when I was a little kid. I never knew when it was on, so it was like some kind of magical treat when I actually came across an episode . I remember absolutely loving this show. I definitely gotta get it on DVD one of these days, relive some of my childhood. I'm sure it'll be much funnier this time around, too .

I am the best Red Dwarf Fan. I can say every line from an episode, I have them memorized. Is that sad or what? Anway. About this film. Last Year it was going to be filmed but Rimmer had to play Lara Crofts Butler, in her new movie.

Thats just FYI.

Trust me, you're not missing anything with series 7, some of the worst episodes are in that season, and there's this HUUGE plot hole which blows a hole in the entire series.

Stop fighting about being the series' 'biggest fan' we all love the show and that's what matters.

What plot hole? The only thing I can think of is how they changed Kochanski to being an ex-girlfriend of Listers, even though he spent the majority of the earlier series saying how they never got together. Bringing Kochanski back, was dumb to say the least.

Hey I liked it that they got another crew member. Someone had to replace Holly and Rimmer didn't they?

The big series 7 plot hole....

Yes, Kochanski was changed a bit (although personally, I prefer Chloe Annette to Clare Grogan for.. reasons that are purple professional that I can't think of right now and NOT because she is better looking ). But that's not it.

Also Kochanski's purpose was to appeal to American audiences, having some eye candy. (Hey, their words, not mine). No one can replace Rimmer and Holly which is why they came back for series 8.

Spoiler:
Well the entire premise of the show was for Lister to get home. There he could settle down with Kochanski (somehow) and live a peaceful life on Fiji. He says many times during the previous 6 seasons that he is homesick, not to mention the fact that he's LOVESICK too. AT the start of Series seven, the crew fix the time drive and get a hyperspace drive, meaning that they can go anywhere at any time. This means Lister can get home, and stay there, especially since they meet Kochanski too but they don't bother, he still drifts in space, having advantures. They actually DO pop back to earth, but only to get a Curry. (Mind you tht's my fave episode of the entire season, that and the "Ace Rimmer" one.)

I don't remember them ever getting a hyperspace drive in series 7. From what I recall, they just changed the time drive so that it would take them any place in time. Yet another breaking of continuity in that series.

actually, that was supposed to be the same time drive from the last episode of series six, but it was never explained why it could suddenly be used as a time drive

Series six:
*Time drive used so the crew are in the year 1421*
Rimmer: so we're still 3 million years in deep space
Kryten: Yes sir, but now we're 3 million years in deep space in the fifteenth century. Isn't it wonderful?

Series seven:
*after they refound the time drive, no explination of it*
Lister: Okay we want the taj mahal restaurant in london 1999

There was no explination about how the time drive could now be used as a hyperspace drive aswell

Ok, still, it does ruin the entire premise. Who not just go hokme... and stay there? (Admittedly that would kill off the entire series), but why do the crew change their minds?

bear in mind that when they did go back in series seven they changed the timeline so starbug never existed, there was a nuclear base or someting too near to the town and everyone fled. If they DID go back they would probably screw up time so Lister never actually joined up with Red Dwarf, never ctually found the time drive and diod all his adventure and stuff

...Like how Rimmer and Lister bicker over the use of the stasis pods in Stasis Leak. I've been a big fan of the show, and I've been watching it ever since the first re-run of Series 2. I was probably seven when I started watching it, now I'm 21

I'll vouch for Elmo that he's a big fan, and he'll probably do the same in return

The good news is that the movie is still go, the film is still waiting to go into pre-production. In a statement read out on Doug Naylor's behalf at Dimension Jump this year, he stated that he is still trying to find funding and a location to film. It might not seem logical, but the UK is a very expensive place to shoot. He's currently trying Australia, and the people he's run into along the way include Peter Jackson and Weta Digital, but sadly they are not to be involved in the project.

I like everything up to Red Dwarf VII, with the exception of Epideme and Smoke me a Kipper... I'm afraid Classic Dwarf remains routed in the first three series, anything after that is only building on those classic episodes

The books are fantastic too. I've read all of them, and I'd have to pick Backwards as the best

I agree Kas is also a massive fan.

Only the first three series though mate? That means you count out "Gunmen of the Apocalypse" and "Back to Reality" out. I'd say Red Dwarf 7 is where the quality went seriously down-hill, that said I loved the return to form in VIII
