Hello! I'm trying to leave Nesticle as my main hacking helpin' hand and today I downloaded FCEUXD. But I am already full of questions. The first is about pallete hacking. Using the PPU Viewer, I located the number of colors of several NES games. Then I opened the Hex Editor, changed the values and the modifications were even visible in real time on the emulator. I tought that clicking on "FILE -> SAVE ROM" would enough, but the changes weren't saved... And I tried various ROMs... Can someone help me please? Thanks Macbee - Trying to decide a NES Rom modification project to work =) |

If the changes were not saved, it means you were either hacking a zipped ROM, read-only ROM, or you were editing RAM, thinking it was ROM (Note the three different view modes in the memory editor -- RAM, PPU, and ROM)

If you are editing the palette in PPU memory, that cannot be saved.

Use the search function in the hex editor to find the palette changes. You must be in Rom view, not PPU. Make the changes and save. You must then reload the rom. |

Correction: Reloading the ROM is not a must. The game only needs to load the palette data again. For example, if you've edited level palette, you should be able to see the changes simply by scrolling the screen, or dying (so the level restarts). This can often be faster than resetting the whole game. |
