This may have been brought up before -- but I can't tell, because, well, I can't search the forum to find out. As far as I can tell, there's no way to search for old text strings or even thread titles, which makes finding older topics a little bit tricky, especially in forums like ROM Hacking where there are 20+ pages of 50 or so threads. It's probably a bitch to program, but is it possible? Or is it actually a feature on here somewhere and I keep missing it somehow?! The only other option I've tried is google searching the forums, but that obviously doesn't work since the word "mario" only comes up with six results. So. What it is, homeslice? Edit: Son of a bitch! This was supposed to go in "suggestions," not ROM hacking. I came back to the hack forum to make a quick check before I posted and obviously didn't click "back" enough to go to the right forum. Could an admin movie it, please? Thanks. This feature used to exist. It was removed because it took too much bandwidth.

Use Google. Test. Search for "Mushroom" on the forums. It's basically about adding the phrase "site:board.acmlm.org" to your queries, i.e. entering "Mushroom site:board.acmlm.org" into the query input box if you want to search for "Mushroom". Google's spiders have been doing a good job for this board, so I don't see a reason why not to use it. |

Google can't search for specific user posts though. I don't get it, though -- this is a new host (and the Search function could definitely be improved), so why not try again? |

Originally posted by blackhole89 I did, that's what I meant by the "mario" comment. I searched http://board.acmlm.org/forum.php?id=9 (to specifically cite only threads in the ROM hacking forum) and it only came up with five results. I searched simply board.acmlm.org with the text "mario" as well and there are still only three pages (granted, it does claim there are 4,750 results, but clicking on "similar pages" on any of the links only brings up a Google error page). A little suspicious for a board that contains emulation and ROM hacking forums, not to mention an entire forum itself with the word "Mario" in the title. this is really off topic in this forum, but.... anyway I think we should have a search feature, but maybe limit the number of searches per person per day, sort of thing. And maybe impose a post count requirement, like only those with 2000 posts or more, or maybe those who have been here a year. The longer you're here, the harder it is to remember when a post was made, and sometimes for quoting purposes you feel the need to. |

I have coded something in PHP that should simplify the process a little. Just look at the bottom of my post layout. (It was quite tricky to get that stuff up... the <FORM> required made the surrounding <FORM>, which was responsible for the layout editor itself, break... in fact, I had to use a technique similar to the one I used for accessing one of the recent admin yourself exploits. |

We also have alot smaller database nowdays. Now we maybe could even have a more effecient way to search... oh well. If a search dosen't get added, I want to know why at least. There is ways to make searching fast without losing alot of cpu power, but that's more advnaced than a few PHP lines. |

Not to mention, remember -- Google only searches though what it archives (which isn't very oftne, I would assume -- too often would kill some sites) A board search would work with live data, not stale data. The "limited to post count / registration time" thing is stupid -- you may be a new user who had heard of things and wanted to find them, and wouldn't -- or you may be a lurker who never posted. A fun piece of irony: Having a 2000-post limit would stop 67%* of the staff from searching the forums, INCLUDING Acmlm himself. It would also stop 99%** of the board from searching. That's still insane, and lowering it to 1000 wouldn't help much either -- it'd still lock out a very large majority of the board. It'd be kinda wierd if you couldn't search your own board *9 people on staff are above 2000 posts. 28 people on staff, including Malow, ||bass, and Blades, even though they're not technically staff. Doing the math, 19/28 = 67.8% *18 people above 2000 posts, 1434 users total. 1416/1434 = 98.74% (edited by Xkeeper on 04-08-05 10:12 AM) (edited by Xkeeper on 04-08-05 10:15 AM) |

Yes. I'd think, if anything, it would be the new folk that should be using a search feature, so they know what's been discussed and what hasn't and don't start new threads about topics that've already been done to death or info. or resources that are already out there.

Search is currently limited to staff. There's been talk about raising the limit but nothing's final yet. (It's not that it's technically hard - I literally have to change one value in the board configuration and that I can do within 10 seconds from writing this post, without access to code.)

The 2000 post limit was suggested with the foresight that within the next year many people are going to exceed that. I wasn't on the old board, but there are quite a number of people with a large number of posts compared to here. 1000 is also reasonable. You're just mad b/c you won't have 2000 posts for a loooong time, Xk Either way, I'm curious as to how the search function is implemented. There are probably ways to reduce the amount of bandwidth it would consume. |

Originally posted by Xkeeper I really doubt the restriction would apply to staff. Hell, even now they can use it (but it has some bugs - no usernames, for one ). I bet it could be fixed up enough for anyone to use it though. Other boards with 50 times as many posts/users have them and they work fine. |

It's rarely used now within staff as it is, as far as I know. It wasn't modified one bit because apparently no one knew how. Anyways, I know I don't use it. If I ever had to find a thread/post I'd do it in someone's profile. (edited by Priere of the Rebellion on 04-29-05 06:41 PM) |
