OK, I tried making my own, but I really suck at it. So I need some fonts. One containing all the standard ASCII characters 33-126 (! through ~) and possibly some of the extended ones like

Hmm, I've not done any fonts myself, and time is not exactly being kind to me in the way of projects, so I can't help there.

But I'd like to comment on your font, if I may. It's cute! The spacing between some of the letters looks a touch odd to me, but the letters themselves are cute. I know a bit of it is uneven looking as far as height goes, but I think that's what's making me think that it's rather, well... cute. I quite like it

I'd just use these fonts (specifically 6x13), but that's because I'm lazy. I also used to be a Linux user, so I'm a little fond of them. You'd probably have to write a script to generate images from the BDF files though.

But to make a really nice font, you just need years of typography and design training or talent, along with a good eye. To make a non-sucky font, look at existing fonts and study up on basic font design. Then practice a lot. You can really do anything you want as long as it's easy to read.

To get Japanese fonts in Windows, download/install the Japanese Language Pack from Microsoft's website. Mac OS X should have a package on the CD if Asian fonts aren't already installed.

It looks alright now but you should have seen the first batch. Yeck. Though interestingly all that really needed changing was like 4 letters. (You may notice that e, a and o could still use some work. )

I have the Japanese fonts, I might just use those but it could be difficult because Windows tends to add 'fuzz' to them to enhance the look on LCD screens (despite that I don't have an LCD, as much as I'd like one) and plus I'm not entirely sure how to type Kanji. (Plus that's a lot of typing.) Would Photoshop open those BDF files though? It does say Adobe BDF.

You could give it a try, but it's really an antique of the bitmap font world. Older font editors and UNIX/X11 font editors probably support the format. The files themselves aren't big, and the format is based on plain text (open it in any text editor to see). It's more of a transitional format that often gets converted to another format for actual use though.

Also, if you have fuzzy text, then make sure you disable ClearType. Normally, anti-aliasing is only applied to larger (usually > 12pt) font sizes in Windows, where it's usually preferable anyway. If you're using smaller font sizes with Japanese fonts, try a variety of sizes since only one or two might have detailed hinting to make it look nice.

Also, Photoshop's text tool lets you choose what type of anti-aliasing is used with the font, including none at all.

I could always try making one though... what would you generally want it to look like, though?

(I mean, hell, I could even go so far as to just copy the LOZ: Oracle series font )

I made a 5x5 font set once....

It only contained A-z though...

So, do you have any... specific look you want or...?

Edit: I was bored... made an 8x5 set... just tell me where to send it

(edit: if you're wondering, Idid that all myself in Paint... no base, no nothing. A good idea is to draw some baselines for your letters -- the top, the bottom, and the 'midpoint' -- it really helps)

Looks like we shared a bit of the same style there Xkeeper... mines a bit smaller though 8x5, plus... extended characters (A few popular ones at least...)

Well of course they'd turn out similar, they're not exactly the most original designs. Not that I'm suggesting a lot could be done with limited space, I'm just saying.. it's nothing surprising.

I think Xkeeper's turned out better, some of Kirby ATW's lowercase letters seem out of place (p, q, y)

This is better suited in a PM.

And don't bump threads this old for something like this.
