He isn't joking. His hack doesn't look much better, yet he thinks he's an SMW hacking genius or something.

Calm down, guys. Sure, his hack could use some work (okay, A LOT of work), but that's no reason to rag on him. There IS such a thing as constructive criticism, you know.

I know of first timers who did hacks that actually * had good level design * weren't profitable for people who sell glasses * did use real (!) ExGFX Ok, alright. There sure is something like constructive criticism, but Bowser_k has already proven he pays absolutely no attention to it, but instead prefers to flame everyone who criticises him down. In other words, I don't think he deserves any further constructive criticism unless there's a feelable improvement about that. And, I think this thread deserves to get closed. There's no point at it anymore. |

Right, he isn't listening. But... last I checked, there wasn't anything in the FAQ about justified flaming. He's as guilty as everyone else who flamed as well, no one is disputing that. Forgive the cliche, but two wrongs don't make a right. You wanna flame, do it in private. PS: This thread (like any other thread) will be closed as soon as I, or another staff member, determine that nothing constructive can result from it. Oh, and for the record, I am not directly accusing anyone of anything. Specific reprimands will come in a PM, so don't sweat the small stuff. (edited by Juggling Joker on 04-03-05 03:18 PM) |

Originally posted by Juggling JokerThank you =/ As I've been saying in previous "Lol look at the newbie what an idiot" threads, there's really no reason to flame someone just for doing poorly and not realizing it. Hell, I started off almost as bad as this guy (and certainly worse in how I handled criticism) but now I'm actually respected (something I never would've dreamed of a few years ago). I'm just saying, just because he's bad doesn't mean he should be flamed to all hell because that will only discourage him from continuing to try, which will prevent him from ever becoming better, which in turn prevents him from creating good things. In short, by attempting to drive away "stupid newbies" you only starve our community. (edited by Kyouji Craw on 04-03-05 03:41 PM) |

Neither was that post. Bowser_K, try changing the palettes used by the berries to help a bit with the palette problems. That would be a start. See? That is the sort of criticism I like to see people giving to others. |

Hm... Now that I think of it, I do know a way the dark feel could be executed better- Darken the original palettes. It worked in SMW - Dark Man Edition... (I think that's the name)

I've had success darkening the palettes in test hacks in the past. It's not too hard of an effect to achieve, once you get used to palette editting. The main problem I have with the palettes as they are now is that they are inconsistent. A good example of this is the Yoshi coins and the bushes.

Yeah, it takes a lot of skill to pull it off perfectly. I tried to do it with my COTMK 1 title screen, but Mario was a little too bright. Oh well.

Um, no? Just multiply the luminosity by every color of every palette by the same fraction. It's tedious, yes, but if you're patient it's pretty easy to get it right.

What I usually do is just reduce the red, green, and blue values by a certain amount (not always the same amount for each color), with slight adjustments as needed. For instance, you can achieve a nice night effect by reducing red and green by about 75 and blue by 25 (or something similar, you get the point). Just experiment with palettes, using other games and hacks as examples, and you'll hit your stride in no time.

First off, you do not know everything about SMW hacking. Nobody does. Some of us know more, while others know less (you certainly belong to the latter). Second, if you make a new hack, nobody is interested in it as long as you don't post screenshots. Acmlm's has had more than enough of these "I am going to make a hack. It will be soooo great! No screenshots though" threads - that's what I think, at least. If you post screenshots together with your first post and it looks good, you shall earn people's respect and probably also encouragement. Kyouji, who exactly respects you? (For the record, I don't. You have done well to give me a reason not to do - two or three months ago, I had an entirely different opinion on you) |

Originally posted by Master MYou have no taste whatsoever. Originally posted by Bowser_kFirst off, don't put full stops after exclamation marks, you're hurting the english language. Secondly, I'd be interested in seeing at least a screenshot of your new work, to see if you've improved or not. Thirdly, criticism is good. After all, what does not kill you makes you stronger. |
