The latest news has said that the pope is in critical condition. Earlier he had a tube put in his mouth to give him nutrients cause he was having a problem swallowing. To top it off he had a urinary infection. The tube and the urinary infection weren't really anything critical but I guess they were a sign of things to come. So what do you all think about it?

Those who follow religion believe that the next pope to take the throne after this pope will be the anti-pope. I guess he is the PR guy for the Anti-Christ. So I'm sure this is pretty bad news for Catholics. And if it were true I guess it would be bad news for everyone.

Well, no offense to anyone, but it makes no difference to me. He is just some other person, and we all die. If he were a relative or friend, I would care, but its some guy name John to me.

Where does the logic of one 'anti-Pope' come in? I never heard of this one. Are they just making up shit now because a Pope is about to bite the big one?

People should calm down but then again I guess the religious fanatics are all going to be in an uproar for a while to come now thanks to all this...and I'm half and half with Sawnec. Not much influence on me either but I know it's a title worthy of respect as well and I'm well aware of the impact he commits on other people other than myself just by his title alone.

A matter of respect paid for him and that should be the end of it really, but I doubt it's going to be anything like that for months or even years after he's through in this world...and you just know the media is going to be all up ons for when the funeral comes about.

well, to some extent i agree, and to some extent not. while i know i disagree with the instituion and what the pope might stand for in religious regards, he was nonetheless an extremely influential, if subtle, figure who's weilding of clothly clout in the last few decades cannot be denied.

if such a separation is necessary, i'd regard him, all cannonical social issues aside, as i would any other influential figure in history with at least a certain amount of respect, despite some of his rather disgusting stances.

Ever since I was a kid, my grandmother (whom is a very Christian woman) told me that "something bad" would happen when the Pope finally died. Now, I'm not really knowledgable about the Christian\Catholic faith, but something like this has been going around for a long time obviously.

I do think he deserves respect though, even if you aren't religious. He's such a spirited and strong willed man, who has remained heavily dedicated to his work. He'll go down in history if he is going to pass away soon.

Well, as the resident guy that knows about the Papal Candidates...I'm going to hold my breath. After John Paul II dies, I'll know (if the person I think it is...Karl Ratzinger) if the person comes to power if we should raise the flag of the anti-Pope. The problem with the prophecy of Fatima is that, as noted in Wikipedia, WE DON'T KNOW THE THIRD SECRET. We know of the first two visions of Our Lady, but the third has either been edited or not revealed in full context.

I think it's interesting to have a changing-of-the-guard. I concur with others in that, to me, he's just some old polish guy named Karol* living in Rome, however I recognize that he has ecclesiastical jurisdiction worldwide (but only in the context of those who hold the same religious beliefs, i.e. Catholics) so to many people he is a very important person. I'm not terribly concerned with who his successor will be, though.

In the end, he was— or still is, I should say— a man who, like all other human beings, has tried to understand and come to terms with the world in which he has lived. Though the conclusions on which he and I have settled are considerably different, in the end, we're all just humans trying to find our way around the world. In the end, we're all just... human. And as a human to a fellow human, I wish him best of health, or, failing that, a painless death.

* His real name is "Karol J

Mmm, the only thing that happens with his death is that they have to find a new one. After mourning over his death of course.

I doubt there will happen any doom or anything like that, the only sign of doom I have seen is my HD.

The thing is, there have been alot of times when the Catholics or any other relgious orginization says that the doom is near. So I doubt it would happen this time either.

Regarding Fatima, I wouldn't be at all surprised if the attempted assassination was the third secret. :\ Then again, who knows. It might have already taken place and be something we wouldn't have even guessed.

I think respect should be shown to the Pope regardless of what side of the fence you're on. Whether you like or dislike him, he's one of the longest serving pontiffs in history and has been extremely influencial. He's going to leave a great legacy, there's no doubt about it. The pros more than outweigh the cons.

Ziff: I wouldn't be surprised if they go right outside the box on the next Pope selection... I figure they'll go with a third-world Pope or they'll go Italian.

Yeah, the Central Americans are looking to be the prime candidates, with Europeans then Africans. I don't think we'll see any of the African Cardinals/Bishops being made the head of the Vatican. Frankly, I'd rather it stay that way. I fear their hyper-conservativism and if the one that services Congo were to be made Pope, I'd have to leave the Church. I really, really fear their stances on a LOT of subjects. There are some great Papal candidates from Central America, especially Cuba. I know that that Cardinal is extremely liberal in dealing with other religions and economics. As for homosexuality and birth control and drug use...Far, FAR better than John Paul II. Although chances are we will never have a John Paul I or a John XXIII again.

There is talk about making John Paul II a saint. Considering what steps are done in making a person a saint, I would agree that he should be made one. Publically, he has done many positive things such as his stand on Communism. Privately, he is a very humble man with great devotion to God and cares for all people around him. Lastly, he did suffer to get where he was--dodging Nazi conscription and practiced illegally to enter the priesthood. Although, there are things to criticize such as his opinions on topics of celibacy (sp?) and contraception, those things are politics and would not be considered very much.

so yeah, it's obvious these are his final days--so, what is the opinion on sainthood for the pope?

i do not deny his steadfast role of global protector of peace and his influences for good througout history, but i would not be so ready to vote for stainthood based on some of his rather disgusting and outdated exlusionary social views. however, i'm not a card carying cathololic, and his views no doubt fall in line with the chruch, so my point is most probably moot unless some sort of radical progressive change in the church were to occur overnight (almost impossible). so perhaps this post was pointless, in hindsight..

Bringing the discussion about the Pope itself to its rightful place...

Ziff: Turcotte's a dark horse?!? I had thought he was just going to fill out the numbers. Geez... It would be great to have a Canadian as Pope, no question, but somehow I can't see it. All we know for sure is that it won't be an American.

Turcotte is indeed a very dark horse. Whereas Oulette is a serious contender. European Vatican insiders claim that the Cardinal's are looking at him as the perfect bridge between Europe and the new Souls in the Church (ie Asia, Africa, Latin America). He isn't very radically conservative. He is a moderate liberal. He is multi-lingual and is the perfect candidate, apparentely. Although personally, I'd still rather Daneels, whom as a liberal Catholic I identify with, and for conservative Catholics, he is a trained diplomat and could easily mend ties that Catholicism needs in the Middle East and abroad.
