Who here likes betas of videogames? I do!

Betas are awesome. After playing that original game for so long, becoming a fan, conquering everything, and knowing how the game engine works inside out, looking at a beta can be very interesting. However, I'm mostly into betas of the past gaming consoles, because thats when games were games. Besides being obsessed with the never-released Resident Evil game, Resident Evil 1.5, its nice to see beta pictures of Mario and Zelda games too. Betas are cool because they show things that could of been, but weren't, and sometimes you wish that you could play the game with those beta elements, and even wish they were in the final release. Its because you like what you have played, and you want more of the same. ClassicGaming.com is a cool site. Yesterday, I was looking at the Super Mario Bros. 3 beta pictures. I'm going to continue looking for pictures and info of videogame betas, because its really cool stuff!

The only beta that I would ever ever want to have is Pokemon Gold beta. It does exist and a Japanese person did dump it...however, finding it is so much of a challenge that you will never ever do it because I cannot ._.; if you did, you are so lucky since I wanted it forever ...

I've played the Sonic 2 beta, which was pretty fun for what it was. It was pretty cool to see where they were in the development cycle and whatnot (Mystic Cave/Dust Hill Zone was mainly just a place to test stuff).

I played the beta of Goldeneye on N64. It was at blockbuster, it was almost the same, but some missions were completely different.

I don't think the Pokemon Gold beta would be that rare. One request on a newsgroup if it's in a GoodTools database.

Beta, prototype, it's all the same. I really haven't messed around with too many... And besides, some of them don't even have that many differences compared to the finished product.

Chronosphere-X, if there is such a place, it would be against the rules to post the URL for it.

About Betas and Protos, the most commonly refered to beta on this board is Star Fox 2 (SNES), no?

And Duck Tales (NES) has some different Soundtracks as the released one (Both, ROM and NSF are not dificult to find).

But else, I never played a Beta or a thing like that.

Elaborate, if true. I find it remarkable that you'd find a beta of a game like that at BLOCKBUSTER of all places.

If that beta really existed it would be worth alot of money.

Most beta versions out there aren't that much diffrent from their final game. Like the ducktales beta. One music was changed competly, another music was made slower in the final version and alot of things got correct grammatically.

Betas are fun becuse they usually do show things that was stripped out. But you do have to remember that they don't remove things that are good. Citadel in Goldeneye was a such famed place, which have been found and was nothing more than a "boring" test level. Or the casino in Goldeneye that apparently was planned, but stripped away. (I bet that they realised the level wouldn't be that much fun somehow...)

I think there was three Starfox betas, if you can refer the other ones as beta. Merely as Alpha, becuse one of the Starfox 2 betas is nothing more than a simple buggy uncomplete Tech demo. (beta should actually mostly be used on software that is somewhat finished but just needs a quite few bugs ironed out). The last Starfox2 beta is however almost complete, with a few bugs that could as well be emulator related... I have no idea.

Starfox 2 wasn't too fun, the version I played. The complete free roaming aspect just didn't feel right for the SNES.

Speaking of Sonic, there's also "Sonic the Hedgehog 4" out there, which I think is just called "Sonic Crackers" or something like that. There's only one playable level, from what I've played, and the music was horrible, obviously a very unfinished game.

OoT had a ton of things going for it. I have one very old 97 or 98 NP, and it's got all those old pictures with the huge town, Link's weird colors, that huge Gold Knight (dang it would have been awesoem to see that in the game) and many other things.

But yeah, looking back at Beta's, and even unreleased games, is fun.

It got a circulation because a Japanese employee leaked to two people who had a small distribution. . . most of the time, you can simply find pictures. I sure hope that it would be in that database, though!

Why would it be against the rules to link to a beta rom? The game itself was never sold, so they cant lose money over it, its the same as linking to a homebrewn rom as far as I can tell.

Goldeneye BETA: OK, I have ellaborated on this before at other boards, and got permabanned because everyone decided I was lying, so I am not going to bother ellaborating here. If you believe me or not, doesnt make a difference to me.

My guess is that the Goldeneye "Beta" might have just been a demo cart sent to stores by Nintendo, and it was based on near-final code. That would make sense.

Sonic 4 became Knuckles Chaotix, I think.

Yeah, there were few differences. In the first level, at the end of the Dam in that little hole in the side of the mountain, there was scuba gear. It comes up at the bottom and says "You got scuba gear" (or however you get items, havent played it in a long time) You couldnt use it though, you could just see it in your inventory.

I remember playing an early beta version of Super Smash Bros. DX (otherwise known as Super Smash Bros. Melee) at Nintendo's GameCube premiere event called "Cube Club". The Nintedno GameCube was not out yet, but Nintendo rented out an open warehouse in Hollywood and set up a bunch of beta GameCube games. Super Smash Bros. Melee has come a long way since the beta version I played back then-- there was less characters in the character select menu, which was layed out funny. The characters felt different too, little quirks in the game mechanics that they fixed. However, what changed to most was the levels. Kirby's level (Green Greens) had stones everywhere, and instead of the waffle cone pattern, it was all on a giant gray rock. Most characters were not available to use, especially new additions and secret characters. Ice Climbers were not there yet, and neither was Peach, or Zelda. In Ness' level, you could hide in the chiminey as Kirby, but people caught on to me.

I would love to have that beta copy of the game... *sigh*

No, Sonic 4 was "Sonic Crackers" -- the funky, glitchy ROM we all know. Sonic Xtreme was scrapped in favor of Knuckles Chaotix, also, just as a fyi.

Also, prototype games kick major ass. It's always fun when you can access stuff in finished games that's still proto (like a few rooms in Zelda 4)
