I need a program for creating dialogs and such. NOT editing them within an existing program. I've been looking ever since I started doing stuff with C, and I just can't seem to find one. Parasyte linked to one, the download link didn't work and he hasn't commented on it since. I also found one called 'Resource Builder' after about 355367 Google searches, very nice but it doesn't make the actual header files I need to use them. If I didn't know better I'd swear it was some sort of conspiracy. Why is something so simple so hard to find?

So yeah...if you want a quick solution, get visual C++, build the interface there, then take the rc file and compile it yourself. Otherwise, wait for Parasyte to respond... |

*sigh* Two minutes on Google and I was able to locate a mirror. You should have, too: lccwin32.exe (5MB) Oh, and here's a link to the resource editor only: weditres.zip (edited by Parasyte on 03-26-05 10:19 PM) |

How do you people keep doing that? Certain things just never seem to show up on Google for me. Well thanks a lot. Neo: I tried. After some fiddling I got it to either make a dialog that doesn't appear or crash windres, along with dozens of warnings and syntax errors. Good old VS. [edit] Er, got the help file? Bit confused with some parts of this. It's saying 'another symbol has this ID' a lot, for one. (edited by HyperHacker on 03-27-05 01:05 AM) |

I'm sure any help files available can be found in the full LCC release.

Gavin turned me on to Watcom, it's great for anything I've ever done with C, and free. |

OK, this really isn't funny. This weditres is utter crap; it looks like it was written in 10 minutes by someone who doesn't speak anything close to English. Labels look like text boxes, you can't tell where or how big anything is, it's a pain just trying to add a control. And, it's the only thing on the planet that actually makes valid resource files! Watcom even looks like it hasn't been updated since 1993, has a ridiculously confusing and akward interface, and gives you the convenient options of saving as either a .rc file that won't compile or a .res file that isn't a valid resource. Maybe some of you 'hardcore' people like to use buggy software and manually hack just about every file, but I prefer things to actually work.

I'm sure you already clarified this -- but why aren't you just using VS? it has a great resource editor.

You could always just write your own. I'm sure you're much more capable than these non-English-speaking programmers you mentioned.

You can also code them by hand. The microsoft resource compiler is free with one of their sdk's. either the .net sdk or platform sdk.

I used Visual Studio .NET to edit the FCEUXD resource, actually. (Compiled .res) And since I used MinGW to compile, well... obviously windres (part of bin-utils) can properly detect the file format and everything. |

Hmm. Maybe VS.Net does a better job with it than plain VS6 does. I wouldn't want to have to buy *cough* the entire thing just for that though.

Yes, it seems pretty silly. Almost 2GB, and all you want is the resource editor. Luckily, I needed the bloody thing for a project I worked on last year, anyway.

I was wondering why you of all people had that installed. I imagine the editor's not available on its own?

No, the resource editor is not available as a stand-alone. And as I mentioned, the reason I have it installed is because I needed it for another project, which quite unfortunately, was designed for MFC.NET. That aside, I still use it on occasion to make a really quick change to the FCEUXD resource file, and not much more than that. The stupid IDE takes about 2 minutes to load. And this is with an Athlon XP 2600+ and 1GB RAM. ... And now you also know why IDEs suck. |

Funny -- it only takes about 8 seconds for me. And this is with a P3 1GHz and 512M RAM. Granted I have the 'old' VS.NET (2002? 2003? whichever was the one after VS6).

It takes about 2 seconds to load for me on an athlon xp 1800. And with just visual c++ and c#, it only takes up about 300 megs of disk space.

My copy is Visual Studio.NET Enterprise Architect. So yeah, that may have something to do with why it's load time is so poor. It's not exactly designed for home\hobby use. |
