Well, they're an upgrade from Darknuts... or a more grown-up version of them. :\ That's what I based my theory on but thanks for clearing up that.

I think it was either King Yoshi or some really, REALLY obscure monster - and to be honest, if only one rank fell victim to a lack of ideas, then I think Acmlm did well.

King Yoshi sprite comes from Super Mario allstars. It appears in the Pipe world in SMB3. I also think it appears on Super mario advance 4MB3. In both games, the king get's transformed into a Yoshi... in the orginal SMB3 it's a piranha plant.

...i'm surprised none recnoised that Yoshi.

Colleen was talking about the original Mario set, which I didn't make or order or anything.

If you're thinking of Deku Babas, Trapster... No. They didn't show up until OoT. O.o'' I think it's a bit nuts to suggest they planned THAT far ahead. They may of based Deku Babas somewhat on Manhandla, though.
