Is the fist time I look this topic and I have a lot of doubts.

1- How can I download or create the ExGFX file of my hacked ROM?

2- How can I insert sprites from other games?

You cant add sprites yet but you can disguise them as something else using ExGFX.

NEW BG YAY!

I have ripped/created a new BG. Its from a picture I found somewhere, but I cropped the picture, reduced the color to 4bit, and made it into tiles. It takes up a scary 3 ExGFX files, but you still have the pipes, and ALL of FG3 left for making levels and to use for your own graphics. Below is an in-game picture of it from my hack. The bad thing is the height the level has to be. The BG can't scroll, and no vertical scroll has to be enabled. Lots of limitations, but the BG looks good I think. So here is the shot:

The file will be sent to Coby for uploading to the ExGFX Workshop, so if you want it, download it. Hopefully all the files are correct and all there. Happy downloading whenever it gets uploaded.

Thanks RR!

The BG uses palette row 3, and does not interfear with almost anything used in forest levels normally. It does mess up the note blocks I think...but maby they are on palette row 4. Mario is currently fire mario, thats why he is that color. Normally he is SMB3 color, but darker, and different shoes, hands, and buttons.

Thanks for the comment on my status bar. I wish it was possible to use more colors tho.

I don't yet know what game it is from, its a screen shot that I found here at Ice Board. Ii PMed clockworks (the guy who posted the shot), and asked him what game it is tho.

Also, I can't believe I forgot the palette!!! I will upload the palette file here later (like tommorrow), and Coby if you can/want to, you can download the file and update it at the ExGFX Workshop.

EDIT:

Here is the Palette file for my tileset that was uploaded. Click Here

Enjoy hopefully.

It is from Kirby and the Amazing Mirror. In fact, if you enter the first mirror, that is the background. Yep... now try the FG!

I can't seem to find the ROM, so I have no clue what the FG looks like. Im sure its complicated, so I wouldn't have a chance.

I prefer doing BG's tho....

I also don't like ripping from GBA games, only SNES games. They are easy and I actually know how to do it. Plus if you want something done, might as well do it your self, cause you can't really relie on others to do it for you.

Uh, Keikonium, you should fix all the grainy stuff. That's what causes the image to take up so much space, since less tiles are optimized in pcx2sopt.

I know its really grainy. I took the original shot:

Cut it in half. Then opened up the half with the big tree in a program called Irfanview. Then I used the color reduction tool, and made it 4bit (16 colors). Then copied the screen into Paint, and cut it up into ExGFX files the right size that SMW can handle. Then imported it.

I had 1 of 2 options:

1. Have it grainy like it is.
2. Have it "smeared" I guess you could say, so that the colors are grouped together like a bad looking gradient.

I used irfanview because I hate the Map167k thing LM has. And to use Map167k, I needed to use pic2snes. It always cuts my image in half (unless its a very small image. It even cuts 128x128 images in half. They are half the size required too). Also, it spreads the image tiles out over the 4 FG/BG files, and also sometimes over the sprites! On top of that I don't know how to save graphics from LM to an ExGFX file. I have tried Map167k toutrials, none help me. Including yours Ice Man.

So you can use these files I have here, or you can try to rip it yourself. If you do, good luck. Sorry the resolution and all that aren't better.

Can you explain more abot how to do it?

I need to learn since begining because I'm a noob changeing backgrounds.

Can't really say anything, since the same thing haoppens to me all the time. Copy/Paste are your friends. For the size problem, Ice Man told me you have to resize the image to 256x224. DON'T DO THIS IN IRFANVIEW!!! IrfanView automatically preserves aspect ratio. Resize it in PSP 3.11 and turn the 'preserve aspect ratio' option off. Hope this helps, Keikonium.

You can turn off "preserve aspect ratio" in Irfanview also. You really have to try and rip the background yourself to understand what Im saying. The picture I ripped from had dimentions of: 240x160.

Therefore, either we have a small height that leaves blackness around the picture on the top and bottom, or we have a small width which makes the background not match up with screen scroll.

I went into paint first, and chose a section of the image that I wanted to use. I cropped it out, and 4bit"ed" it using Irfanview. I couldn't do the whole thing because it took up almost more than 5 ExGFX files (at least the way I rip it did) and it used way more than 16 colors. Something like 30 or 50 or somthing. So I took a section that was 128x128 (thats the size of a normal ExGFX file). I wanted it to "match" on the sides of the screen, so I ripped the other 32 pixel width (thats 2 more 16x16 tiles), and put those into a file. I also wanted abit more height to the picture, so I ripped a few more tiles on the top and bottom of the picture. Kinda hard to explain, but hopefully someone understands. I'm sure I could have done it quicker, faster, and better but I'm not used to ripping from screenshots.

I also despise PSP of any edition. imo, it is the worstly designed program, and it looks horrible. I much prefer to use MS Paint, Irfanview, and PS7 if I really need to. I know the layout of PSP and PS7 are kinda similar (so don't bother pointing that out), but for some reason I just don't like to use PSP.

I just wont rip from screens anymore, I will leave it up to all of you guys to do.

Do you have any ExGFX in your rom? If you don't, you need to put in a .bin file into the ExGraphics folder found in the destination in your rom. Then insert them in LM (Note: if you haven't extracted graphics, then do that first, then insert graphics and ExGFX).

That should then work. Then you would have to edit the graphics and stuff unless they are already made (like files from here) and then edit the Map16.
